The main thing that decided that factor was the lower storm surge than people expected. I haven't seen accounts of flooding like the news is saying there were. Like I deadass can't find a single image of people's area being flooded. The winds are no joke though.
Fu Nguyen I doubt they lied. The storm just moved a lot fast over the coast than it was predicted. Katrina hovered alike Harvey did here. That's why we had severe flooding. Even though Katrina was a lot more worse and more powerful. But yeah, Laura came IN and OUT in less than 12 hours lmao. That's highly absurd levels of speed now that I realize it.
Fu Nguyen Looks like it was 600 miles in diameter and I could see that with my own eyes from Houston. Or at least we can use that as a reference point of measurement. Also Wind ≠ Storm Surge. Storm surge has a lot of contributing factors that make it what it is. If you have power (hurricane winds) and you have a lot of it, there should be no doubt for it to get big. But, if you lack the time in order to build it up, then the storm surge becomes a lot weaker than it could be. And since the speed of the storm's movement was so high, damage wasn't maximized and flooding was absolutely nonexistent. Whole reason why it's still a Category 2 all the way inland.
Wouldn't it be grrreat if a reasonable amount of this rain could have kept moving west & helped with fires in CA? Ironic... 'dying of thirst in the middle of an ocean.'

Everyone enjoy a few days off! Y'all are so lucky to experience this! A lot of us are jealous over on the Florida/Alabama border. We are hoping something comes this way.
