Guys and Gals! Please share your favorite rhubarb recipes...I'd love to get some ideas from ya....seems like rhubarb has so many possibilities, some of ya were sharing that your family has a patch that's 50 years old!! Tell me your stories and recopies please! I'd love to hear them!
Strawberry Rhubarb pie- I wish I had my grammy's recipe! 😋
Took the time Guy! grabbed Mom's recipe boxes in estate fiasco. Aunt Max 1988: Rhubarb Bars.
3C rhubarb cut small
1 1/2 C wt sugar
2-3 T corn starch dissolved in 1/4 C water
1t vanilla (after cooked). [This is me 😁 cook on pot on stove top.] Aunt Max: cook until thick. Cool till lukewarm.
Crust:
1 1/2 Oatmeal
1 1/2 flour
1C br. sugar
1/2 t soda 1/2 c nut meats
1C margarine
Blend and put 3/4 in 9X13 pan. Pat firm. Spread rhubarb on & rest of crumbs. Pat slightly. Bake 375 F 35-40 Minutes. Wooooo!!!!!!!
I was glad to see you found the sunflower seeds that you buried at 16:47 in the first planter.
Rhubarb should come back every year. I wouldn't recommend harvesting any till next year. That way it can established better. My parents always liked putting cow manure on it early in the spring. My dad always said horse manure didn't get hot enough to kill the weed seed in it. I don't know about that for sure. But with you having cows, you might want to get a little manure now and get it breaking down for next spring.

Yes Rhubarb will come back every year as long as you properly cut the stalks when harvesting. The ones my mom planted at our old property would of came back this year but the darn groundhogs destroyed them.

Rhubarb is a perennial. I usually get 3 harvests per year in MI. Only take a small amount, if any, the first year. At harvest time, you can take as much as 80% of the plant at a time. Never cut stalks. Grab from the bottom of the stem. Twist, and pull at the same time. Those raised beds look great next to the outdoor kitchen.
OMG you actually planted rhubarb. we like 1 plant up here in Maine. the rest we dig up and it goes away. it will take over if not controlled.
I think you missed an opportunity to put some of those tree branches you cut down into the raised beds before adding the soil.
I have some Vegega beds too. I put in a rhubarb plant last year, but I have a lot of shade. Rhubarb doesn't like NC heat, so, you will need to put some shade cloth on it so it doesn't bolt quickly next year.
My dad has a 50 year old rhubarb patch, he swears they need horse manure, don't know why horse instead of cow but that's what he has the nicest patch around. Oh & they take lots of water in the spring while growing. Awesome stuff

Now, in regards to that tractor; Isnt this the second time that you've broken a window on that damn thing?.. They definitely need a revision on their door design that would be more conducive to an articulated steer tractor.
lol...nope it's the first time....lesson learned....close the door when driving lol...same goes for a tractor

Can you divert the roof runoff away from the raised beds during an intense rainstorm so your beds don't get washed out? I foresee a problem, but maybe the diffusers will prevent that.
I put a large amount of mulch in them and they actually only get about 1/4 of the runnof. I'll be installing a diffuser on the drip edge to help disperse the water very soon also
Hi JOSH, When You built the raised beds out of WOOD, did anybody advise You about using a different wood than White OAK? maybe LOCUST or cedar? Not sure which is better or will last longer? I do HOPE that the METAL stuff has no nasty chemicals to leach into the soil AND the FOOD! Looks like You might have had some RAIN? YOU, PETS & CRITTERS BE WELL & SAFE! BLESSED BE!
no sir... the white oak will slowly degrade, it's all good, what I may do is build metal beds around them or potentially pour concrete or build a rock wall. I milled these up out of white oak, you'd be very hard pressed to find any cedar large enough to mill this around here and putting locust on a sawmill is a big time no no...super super hard...but you're right...lasts forever. The metal beds are simply steel with powder coat...no worries on them leaching anything and they'll last a while
Josh, I am guessing you know this already, but be careful with ruhbarb! Unlike celery, the leaves on ruhbarb are very poisonous!

Hello from Chicago! Before you filled those raised bedswith soil and top soil, did you think of layering some wood on the bottom? A lot of benefits for the flowers and you've got a ton of it lying around since the septic police forced you to cut those trees down.
I'm testing a bed out with some hügelkultur down by the house.....we'll see if it works!

actually I think blueberries like it a little sour.....meaning acidic...might need to research that one on my own to see!

Hey stoney did you know that sunflowers release chemicals that will inhibit the growth of other plants? I know it doesn't kill all plants but maybe you should check and see if it will kill the other plants in the planters.

Rhubarb comes back every year and they get bigger every year I've seen rhubarb stools which is the technical name for their Ruth Ball up to 80 year old you can use a rhubarb forcer which is basically a flower 💐 pot turn up side down over the plants it makes them grow faster and they are sweeter and more tender obviously it's has to be a tall pot so it room to grow they can grow up to 3 feet when they are two or three years old as for recipes stewed rhubarb and custard is delicious chop the stems up put in a pot of water and add sugar about ten spoons and boil on till the chopped up pieces turn to mush then serve up with custard or ice-cream 😂😂 a dessert for kings 😂or you make a rhubarb pie 🥧😅
Sorry no recipe, but I see you putting dirt in your raised beds without lining the beds on the bottom first. I did that when we built our beds and when we watered the beds the dirt would wash out. I live in south-central Idaho so maybe the watering won' affect you like it did us.

They are stainless I do believe, so a little more brittle if ya really wrench on them hard....it's a me problem for sure, not a bolt issue lol...I have a bad habit of overtightening
