    Storm surge, or coastal flooding, tends to be the deadliest aspect of hurricanes. As wind from the storm pushes water onshore several feet above the normal tide, it can trap people in their homes, wash away entire houses, and make rescue missions harrowing and slow.
    In the US, the Eastern and Southeastern coastlines are among the most vulnerable areas for storm surges. Along the East Coast, hurricane Sandy produced a massive storm surge in 2012. On the Gulf Coast, places like Galveston, Texas and New Orleans have seen multiple hurricanes so they've built some infrastructure to help defend against excessive flooding. Levees, canals and seawalls are designed to stop or redirect rising water away from cities. But even those can be inadequate, when faced with an especially strong hurricane.
    What really concerns experts, though, are places that don’t experience a lot of hurricanes but are still vulnerable to storm surge, like the coast of Georgia and Northern Florida. These areas have shallow water, which means sea level can rise faster and water can reach further inland making the flooding worse. But they’ve seen fewer hurricanes than the Gulf Coast and they are likely to be less prepared.
    So when a major hurricane like Irma hits low-lying areas like these, the storm surge can be the first and deadliest thing headed their way.

      Jivan Reyes During the 1980 you would expect 4 hurricane per season. We've just been in a drought for about a decade it's got nothing to do with climate change the only reason they seem to be getting stronger is because more people settle on the coastline where it's low leveled ground making it easy to flooded example would be new Orleans an katrina.

    Your definition of storm surge is a not complete. Storm surges tend to happen mostly becuase of low pressure from the hurricane causing the water to rise due to less pressure pushing down on the water.

    • @-Meric-
      @-Meric- 6 лет назад +106

      Josef This is just a simple video on it. High and low pressure gets a bit more complex

    • @offchance789
      @offchance789 6 лет назад +50

      Water is non-compressible, storm surges occur due to high winds pushing water towards shore. Air pressure differences only fuel a hurricane to continue.

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 6 лет назад +39

      That's not what the graphic at 2:23 says. It calls central pressure a "minimal contributor compared to other factors."

    • @scottwilson4798
      @scottwilson4798 6 лет назад +16

      offchance you're confusing the sea level rising under the hurricane with expanding . You're right it's non-compressible but it's still pushed down less under the hurricane than outside the hurricane, and this pressure difference cause the water to move in under the hurricane, giving a rise in sea level

    • @Doping1234
      @Doping1234 6 лет назад +35

      Air pressure still is a minor factor. The strongest hurricane in terms of low pressure measured was Wilma with 882hPa. This pressure differential to normal pressure of 1013hPa can hold a water column of 1.3m. And this is in the center of the storm at the min. pressure measured in its lifetime. Storm surges occur outside of the center and are, as shown in the video, up to 4m high. Low barometric pressure is hence just a minor contributing factor

    Why do you name this hurricanes with silly names like :
    Kathy, Betty, Gary etc (granny names, don't sound dangerous).
    Name them like :
    Death-maker, the destroyer, megatron 300 etc.
    Than you would see how people would get scared and run for their lives before it's to late.

    How can anyone deny climate change after the strength and frequency of these storms increase?

    • @corndog6269
      @corndog6269 6 лет назад +11

      Cassidy Soloff we are at peak of hurricane season. We are going to see a ton of hurricanes at this time. We had 4 hurricanes at one point on the Atlantic in 1998 and FIVE in 1996... did people bring up politics and global warming when those storms developed? 2004 was the year of like three to four hurricanes that hit Florida that same year! Climate change is inevitable. We affect global warming, yes. But not as exaggerated as critics like to say or do. We are entering a mini ice age.

And you will be hoping to be found by rescuers and sent to a shelter. Worst of all you could die. Be careful when you are driving in flooded road, always drive slow in that situation. DON'T WAIT TO LEAVE AT THE LAST MINUTE.

Even though it was called Typhoon Alley, they never had a storm that big and never even had a word in the local dialect for Storm surge. yet it was the main reason over 6,000 people died. Some of the stories I heard there were truly tragic. This is becoming more and moe common in this age we live in.

    It's true that the storm surge can come ashore before the bulk of a hurricane, but the very highest water levels usually occur around the eye. So right when the wind is strongest, is when your house near the coast is being smashed to pieces by the ocean. This makes it less likely that you can survive.

      Many personal cameras were still analog back then and recorded on film. The ones that were digital still had what we would consider primitive photographic sensors today. RUclips didn't exist until 2008 and its first videos were of terrible quality in large part due to this, but also because of the limits on internet speed back in those days. Look up "me at the zoo" for the first video that was ever uploaded onto RUclips and see for yourself how weak the video quality is.

    Storm surge from Dorian has decimated northern Bahamas. People, or me, growing up, you learn so much about the wind of a hurricane. Board up, tie down, batten down. But the WATER is what I've seen cause the most damage. The money and energy spent on wood and rope really could go toward rafts/tubes for the family.

    Storm surge damage - and the risk to people - is also dependent on the type of structures that are near shorelines and which could be flooded or knocked down. Individual family homes made of wood and built at grade on the ground level will be not only inundated, but sometimes just busted to pieces. If you're in a building like this, you can readily be injured or killed. A reinforced concrete building, on the other hand, that's even 3 or 4 stories tall is likely to survive without collapsing, and people can shelter on the upper floors and survive.
