You're right. To be fair, media tends to focus on close to home issues first, but Vox has enough experience with international news that I would really appreciate them doing a voxsplainer on the Rohingya crisis/potential genocide.
Tournel Henry I highly doubt Christians would pray about the storm passing us if it's coming regardless. They're praying for everyone to be safe. (And its not really funny)
Jivan Reyes During the 1980 you would expect 4 hurricane per season. We've just been in a drought for about a decade it's got nothing to do with climate change the only reason they seem to be getting stronger is because more people settle on the coastline where it's low leveled ground making it easy to flooded example would be new Orleans an katrina.
Scotty Peterson I guess you don't watch the news that often. I am aware of the scientific debate on global warming. But that's not what the politics of the country talk about now, is it?
Jackson Meade Expect I don't know stop it? Solar is already becoming cheaper and if we push to make fossil more expensive we can stop global warming earlier.
North and South Carolina is about to get hit with Hurricane Florence. I hope people start sharing this video. People who aren't used to hurricanes, don't consider how dangerous all of the flooding is.
Your definition of storm surge is a not complete. Storm surges tend to happen mostly becuase of low pressure from the hurricane causing the water to rise due to less pressure pushing down on the water.
Water is non-compressible, storm surges occur due to high winds pushing water towards shore. Air pressure differences only fuel a hurricane to continue.
offchance you're confusing the sea level rising under the hurricane with expanding . You're right it's non-compressible but it's still pushed down less under the hurricane than outside the hurricane, and this pressure difference cause the water to move in under the hurricane, giving a rise in sea level
Air pressure still is a minor factor. The strongest hurricane in terms of low pressure measured was Wilma with 882hPa. This pressure differential to normal pressure of 1013hPa can hold a water column of 1.3m. And this is in the center of the storm at the min. pressure measured in its lifetime. Storm surges occur outside of the center and are, as shown in the video, up to 4m high. Low barometric pressure is hence just a minor contributing factor
Why do you name this hurricanes with silly names like : Kathy, Betty, Gary etc (granny names, don't sound dangerous). Name them like : Death-maker, the destroyer, megatron 300 etc. Than you would see how people would get scared and run for their lives before it's to late.
Boni4 Real Lol. The WMO (World Meteorology Organization) started naming storms in 1953 after women and in 1979... after men and women. Irma is the replacement name of Irene of 2011 by the way.
Wow, Mississippi doesn’t even get a mention despite it’s entire coast being destroyed by Katrina and it claiming the 28 foot surge record. The entire coast of Mississippi was destroyed and it’s so very rarely mentioned in any video.
@Jackson Meade - Yes, I know that we also call [] brackets, but parentheses would be more appropriate in this use (brackets are usually only used within parentheses) and know that he meant what we'd call parentheses. @Don Draper - Nah, guess I missed that one.
Cassidy Soloff we are at peak of hurricane season. We are going to see a ton of hurricanes at this time. We had 4 hurricanes at one point on the Atlantic in 1998 and FIVE in 1996... did people bring up politics and global warming when those storms developed? 2004 was the year of like three to four hurricanes that hit Florida that same year! Climate change is inevitable. We affect global warming, yes. But not as exaggerated as critics like to say or do. We are entering a mini ice age.
I am so glad I live in Brazil, and there is no such thing down here. But, I believe Katrina, Harvey and Irma all together makes less damage than this corrupt politicians.
JGuilherme Very true corruption is devastating, in the US alot of politicians being bribed by oil/gas companies to deny climate change and remove funding from research intitutions. Which is causing deaths of thousands across the globe.
As someone who lives in Houston and experienced Harvey, i cannot agree with you more. BUT don't wait to leave till the last minute and get stuck in traffic when the storm is nearby you because you will be under water. Your car, all of your belongings will be ruined. And you will be hoping to be found by rescuers and sent to a shelter. Worst of all you could die. Be careful when you are driving in flooded road, always drive slow in that situation. DON'T WAIT TO LEAVE AT THE LAST MINUTE.
Looks like that could mean trouble for folks later this week with Florence. I'll be teaching my students about this tomorrow, and using this video. Well done!
Dear Vox, I notice you guys love to use Marimba music in your videos. If you guys ever wanted someone to provide somme more music for your videos, I would love to play some and send you the sound files. Thanks!
i had to evacuate due to a flood warning/ storm surge warning, everything is going on so fast and the wind is so powerful that i can hear things breaking and rain hitting against the ground and shutters, this is honestly very frightening please stay safe everyone.
I went to Tacloban City, Philippines after Yolanda in 2013. Stil dead bodies in the main street. Even though it was called Typhoon Alley, they never had a storm that big and never even had a word in the local dialect for Storm surge. yet it was the main reason over 6,000 people died. Some of the stories I heard there were truly tragic. This is becoming more and moe common in this age we live in.
Oh Allah help us survive this monster Hurricane and protect the properties and citizens from harm. Stay strong and vegelent fellow Carolinas and Virgina. We will continue praying for you.
We have personally experienced a Category 4 hurricane in the south eastern India and it was monstrous. A 6 storeyed building built with solid concrete shook. We thought it was an earthquake but no, its the power of the winds. Imagine how a category 5 hurricane could be.
AnthroRoyaltyy Man, I feel like I would have left my pets as heartless as that sounds. Or will leave them at a shelter and run!!! You're like at a high floor, oh gosh. Well I wish you the best! And if you believe in God, may he protect you. :)
The water is actually very bad for the building even if you're in the 11th floor.it damages the building and can even cause it to collapse.you should consider all the risks man..
It's true that the storm surge can come ashore before the bulk of a hurricane, but the very highest water levels usually occur around the eye. So right when the wind is strongest, is when your house near the coast is being smashed to pieces by the ocean. This makes it less likely that you can survive.
Breaking News: Hurricane Irma crashed thru President Trump's personal library. All 3 books were completely destroyed and... in a tragic twist... ...He hadn't even finished coloring them :)
Storm surge is what killed most people in Leyte, Philippines when Haiyan struck. It may not matter, but I'm praying for you Americans who will be affected by Irma.
Storm surge from Dorian has decimated northern Bahamas. People, or me, growing up, you learn so much about the wind of a hurricane. Board up, tie down, batten down. But the WATER is what I've seen cause the most damage. The money and energy spent on wood and rope really could go toward rafts/tubes for the family.
Many personal cameras were still analog back then and recorded on film. The ones that were digital still had what we would consider primitive photographic sensors today. RUclips didn't exist until 2008 and its first videos were of terrible quality in large part due to this, but also because of the limits on internet speed back in those days. Look up "me at the zoo" for the first video that was ever uploaded onto RUclips and see for yourself how weak the video quality is.
This video is factually incorrect. They claim the levees broke before the storm hit which is not accurate. They also imply the levees broke and that's why more people didn't evacuate, also not true.
Remember 2013 when the Philippines was hit by Typhoon Hayian. The storm surge killed about 15,000 people. I can clearly remember that tragic day. Worst experience of my life.
Storm surge damage - and the risk to people - is also dependent on the type of structures that are near shorelines and which could be flooded or knocked down. Individual family homes made of wood and built at grade on the ground level will be not only inundated, but sometimes just busted to pieces. If you're in a building like this, you can readily be injured or killed. A reinforced concrete building, on the other hand, that's even 3 or 4 stories tall is likely to survive without collapsing, and people can shelter on the upper floors and survive.
It's strange watching videos like these and knowing that people that are fine right now might be hurt by the incoming hurricane. I'm basically watching a mini-documentary about a disaster which hasn't happened yet. Feels kinda hopeless/depressing.
2:44 wow look at poor Bangladesh! More than 20 foot storm surges & how high is the majority of their land?????? btw is this why America still uses Imperial instead of Metric? 20 foot sounds way more impressive than 7 metres doesn't it! smh
I just realised, Americans aren't very good on Geography & probably don't know where Bangladesh is - it's the big red dots to the right of India & if you don't know where India is........ Ok Bangladesh is the big red dots in the big bay looking thing (same shape on the map as where the dots are in America) to the right of America
Sorry ptf606, I should have said some Americans, not all, but when I thought about it, I really did think that most Americans wouldn't know where Bangladesh was on a map like that, do you think I'm wrong?
My house is in the path of hurricane Irma's eye currently and this has been the scariest week of my life. Let's hope all of my stuff is there when we get back.
I’m a Floridian and Irma wasn’t the worst hurricane I’ve been through, I’d say Frances and Jeanne just because they came right after each other and I live where the eye of both Frances and Jeanne hit.
It's also important to note that New Orleans is below sea level so it's never going to end well when the levees break...It will just seep in as if it's a bowl
We only had a thunderstorm and some winds when Katrina hit where I live, but I awoke to a huge tree looming over my head. It had broken the window, but the backboard of my bed saved me from a lot of head damage
Should've mentioned the reason Katrina did what it did to New Orleans was because while it landfall as a cat 3 it churned in the Gulf of Mexico as a cat 5 just a few hours before landfall. What that means is Katrina brought a cat 5 storm surge with it onto land.
Love how Vox pumps out these relevant topics so quickly.
CJaee yeah
CJaee That's Vox for ya.
Unfortunately No one cares, even the my Malaysian family doesn't care about the Rohingya, it's not a relevant topic anymore
Flix I'd like to point out the BBC has released a video about it, but I think they focus on things closer to home and the people who watch them.
You're right. To be fair, media tends to focus on close to home issues first, but Vox has enough experience with international news that I would really appreciate them doing a voxsplainer on the Rohingya crisis/potential genocide.
Anyone watching this while Hurricane Florence heads for the American Southeast ? Wishing them the best .

Acknowledging global warning isn't going to stop hurricanes from happening lol not sure what you're blabbering about Jivian

Americans don't have to worry about Hurricane Jose because Trump won't let him in.

Melanie Higgins the flooding already bad the current is so strong that water is too power fil I already know
Your definition of storm surge is a not complete. Storm surges tend to happen mostly becuase of low pressure from the hurricane causing the water to rise due to less pressure pushing down on the water.
Josef This is just a simple video on it. High and low pressure gets a bit more complex
Water is non-compressible, storm surges occur due to high winds pushing water towards shore. Air pressure differences only fuel a hurricane to continue.
That's not what the graphic at 2:23 says. It calls central pressure a "minimal contributor compared to other factors."
offchance you're confusing the sea level rising under the hurricane with expanding . You're right it's non-compressible but it's still pushed down less under the hurricane than outside the hurricane, and this pressure difference cause the water to move in under the hurricane, giving a rise in sea level

At least put the metric measurements in brackets on screen
Or, you know, educate yourself. You filthy uncultured, tea sipping, baguette munching, pretend soccer playing, ghost faced, plague spreading swine.
You're on an American website making a request of an American content creator, please say "parentheses" instead of "brackets."
Ace Ace We use the word brackets too. The difference between them is (this) and [this]. But I side with your overall message lol
Ace you didnt get the memo? using brackets instead of parentheses comes with the metric system.
@Jackson Meade - Yes, I know that we also call [] brackets, but parentheses would be more appropriate in this use (brackets are usually only used within parentheses) and know that he meant what we'd call parentheses.
@Don Draper - Nah, guess I missed that one.

Because they are dumb. Plain and simple. Even without the hurricanes.
You can't really look at the frequency of storms with a span of 10 years and then make claims about global warming.
Who do you think? Half this country voted for the Trump.
the harp things has been debunked- its now becoming a college.

Conor Andrich then go to the storm surge area and save people

Flooding is the worse. The wind is bad too if it takes your roof away.
I never knew the water could come that far...just imagine what a 200 feet tsunami could do :0
I have no clue who this guy is but I subscribed so he can hit 9 mil

I'm legit watching this in Miami during a hurricane

Why does footage from 2005 look like it was produced in the late 80s?
Cause you forgot how fast technology started to advance mid/late 2000's.
Because technology rapidly expanded in the past decade
Many personal cameras were still analog back then and recorded on film. The ones that were digital still had what we would consider primitive photographic sensors today. RUclips didn't exist until 2008 and its first videos were of terrible quality in large part due to this, but also because of the limits on internet speed back in those days. This video is factually incorrect. They claim the levees broke before the storm hit which is not accurate. They also imply the levees broke and that's why more people didn't evacuate, also not true.
There is a house in new orleans

yet Irma will probably kill less then 5,000 and it will become way more famous.
Hire some dutch folk to manage your water problems in the future.

Thank you for not using metric, it's not needed, especially in a video concerning those in America who are accustomed to imperial measurements.
What's so hard with adding metric measurements too?
T H O T P A T R O L whats so hard about converting them yourself?
well ever: everybody wastes time in conversions, OR one person wastes time on conversions and shows everybody else.

It's an important issue
Katrina was a category 5 before it weakened just before it made landfall
People: A hurricane is coming, help!
Government: Wait, let’s name the hurricane before we escape!
Anyone here for Dorian???
This is true, thanks Katrina. Ike, Harvey, Irma.
People of Florida, I'm not a professional help-offerer/person but
RUN
these videos should be displayed in movie theater along with trailers so common person can understand when such stroms hit.. what happens..
I’m a Floridian and Irma wasn’t the worst hurricane I’ve been through, I’d say Frances and Jeanne just because they came right after each other and I live where the eye of both Frances and Jeanne hit.
The Philippines also suffer storm surge. Caused by Hurricane Haiyan in 2013. Which killed 6,000 in the philippines
Everyone in Florida and even South Georgia stay safe this weekend, we're for a wild ride
Feeling so bad for the people that needs to deal with hurricane Irma
Who's watching this while Hurricane Harvey is happening? I am super scared of storm surge now.
Note that while Katrina was a high end Cat 3 at landfall, it was a firm Cat 5 at peak intensity in the middle of the Gulf.
It's also important to note that New Orleans is below sea level so it's never going to end well when the levees break...It will just seep in as if it's a bowl
We only had a thunderstorm and some winds when Katrina hit where I live, but I awoke to a huge tree looming over my head. It had broken the window, but the backboard of my bed saved me from a lot of head damage
so, that's exactly what is happening with Dorian :/
Storms are getting stronger every year, you'll notice this no matter where you are.
Actually, the levees in New Orleans didnt break until Tuesday morning. After the storm passed over.
There are catastrophic disasters all over the globe. Is it Nature or Nurture?
Should've mentioned the reason Katrina did what it did to New Orleans was because while it landfall as a cat 3 it churned in the Gulf of Mexico as a cat 5 just a few hours before landfall. What that means is Katrina brought a cat 5 storm surge with it onto land.
Hurricane Katrina was a Category 5 storm, not a Category 3. It made landfall as a Category 3 storm.
In Florida. Still have power. I'm super ready for Irma to be a thing of the past and it hasn't even made landfall yet.
I'm right where the eye is supposed to pass through in Florida and can't evacuate so let's hope that this storm surge doesn't kill me!
We also had 23 ft of storm surge from Typhoon Haiyan that’s why so many people died
