I think why many of us like the song Lick it up is because they played it at all the school dances and the girls would scream and dance with us guys. It was cool to have Kiss played at the dance. It beat Flock of seagulls for sure. But I was 17 at the time and am now 58 so it doesn’t hit me the same, but it is part of the soundtrack of my youth

Lick It Up is not only my top-favorite Kiss studio album released in the 1980s, but also my top-favorite Kiss studio album overall! All ten tracks bring me ample joy, especially And On The 8th Day! Vinnie Vincent really did save the group on a musical level! 🙂

Vinnie V work here is fantastic. I've found myself checking up his VVI albums looking for that style, tone and darkness and found nothing compared to Lick it up. At some point I even doubted it was him playing.

I feel the exact same way you do about Invasion. Nails on chalkboard vocals and soulless, cheesy guitar solos. Vinny is a great songwriter but seems to need cowriters to temper things down a bit. He wrote a lot of great stuff with Gene and Paul. I didn't see Vinny live so can't comment on that. Lick It Up is the last album I really got into to. Not nearly as much as everything before it but better thane very album after.

I got to see them twice on each of those tours, all great shows.

I remember clearly seeing them on this tour after tuning them out for several years. Half full arena with Accept opening (I became new fan). I was blown away by energy of performance. I also got obsessed with Vinnie for awhile as I was a guitarist at the time. Great memories.

While visiting Toronto back in the day, i found a cassette for 99 cents. I bought it because it said AXE. By the name, i thought it would be heavy metal. Surprised by how tame it was. Some catchy tunes though

I remember as a kid thinking Kiss were the greatest band ever because every song was so good, I couldn't name any other bands where I liked every song so they were unique in that respect, this album was the last truly great one save for the title track.

He should've sung it on the album too, strange that he didn't when months later he did live seems like an arrogant decision by Gene and Paul.

It's very close but I still love Creatures a little bit more man.. though this is the best non makeup Kiss album and Vinnie played a big part in saving Kiss! If he didn't help write all those great tunes on that album, taking the makeup off would not have saved them period, they would have been done as a band quickly otherwise! Great video brother 🤘🏻 My top 3 off this album would be Not For The Innocent ( though I prefer the demo even more), Young and Wasted, followed closely by Exciter 🎸

I didn't really discover Creatures until the CD remaster with original artwork, but what a beast of an album! Too bad Gene and Paul lost Vinnie, that was a helluva foursome with Eric.

I read a magazine article from maybe 1992 with Paul saying yeah, they could put the makeup back on with a PATHETIC sign behind them. Four years later... did enjoy the reunion tour but everything since, not so much.

I totally agree that the song Lick It Up is lame. The video for that song is hilarious to me. When they reveal their faces..Lol. Pawl acting like a fancy boy. Gene trying to look evil. Vinnie looking effeminate. Eric pumping his fist and rocking. Great album though. ✌️👍

Finally listened to this after 30-ish years on vinyl. Now I remember where KIIIIIIS (young) WEDNESDAY (wasted) comes from. Great one-two punch with Creatures, shame Gene and Paul didn't recognize Vinnie as a full member.

At 10:31 when you wondered if Vinnie’s solo was too crazy on Exciter, surprisingly no, if anything it’s more melodic and in my opinion I love it and wished they kept it, but here it is man, you decide if it should’ve stayed or if Rick’s solo is better (:

Good and honest review. Had VV only stayed, or kept from be fired. My ranking, best to least good.
    1. Exciter...love that song, was the first KISS song I heard besides the title track, 7 years old.
    2. All Hell's Breakin' Loose...great Zep vibe in the riff.
    3. Not for the Innocent...the demo where Gene and Paul trade vocals is even better.
    4. Fits Like a Glove...concert staple at the time and many years later.
    5. And on the 8th Day...agree with the anthem feeling.
    6. Lick It Up...has to be here in the middle as it was My "first" KISS song.
    7. Gimme More...that intro riff sounds like a swarm of angry bees.
    8. Young and Wasted...agree that Gene does it better on the album than Eric live.
    9. A Million to One...gets a bit repetitive, should have included a break or something.
    10. Dance All Over Your Face...ok song. Nothing wrong with it.
I put Lick It Up, as a body of work, easily in the Top 5 of all KISS srudio albums along with Creatures, KISS, HTH and Revenge.

I like Lick It Up better than Creatures because of certain songs that really rocked and were very catchy: "All Hell's Breakin Loose, Exciter, A Million To One; etc." I just wished the makeup/costumes gimmick remained. That would have enhanced the image to the already great songs on that album. Vinnie on the cover with the Ankh Warrior get up. That would have been more awesome than their plain mugs on the cover.

Now I like the album Lick it Up ( not the song). When it came out I had a hard time without the make up and outfits. Albums make up for me it's Asylum and Revenge.
But Fits like a Glove and Million to One are my favorites on Lick it Up.

Sorry Dr, I'm on team creatures. I don't have quite the level of dislike for the track Lick it up that you do, but that song and dance all over your face for me drag the album below creatures. Otherwise it's a match.

I agree with you about a lot of stuff, but I disagree with a lot, too. For example: Crazy Nights. I like Crazy Nights and love I’ll Fight Hell. But I noticed something a few days ago that you may enjoy. Between running around the house getting ready for work and then hopping in the car a correlation formed in my mind. Did you ever notice that especially on that album when Paul went into higher register vocals he sounds just like George Costanza going on a rant? Right?! No shit! So, do this: put on Crazy Nights, close your eyes, and imagine Paul has been relegated to Stradlin territory. Strictly rhythm guitar. The band is onstage in full Crazy Nights attire, focusing more on getting their jogging in than playing the songs and in the middle is George belting out My Way. Fuck yes. Kramer is head banging in the front row, Elaine has a dumbstruck lustful look on her face and Jerry is shaking his head wondering how Art Vandelay is headlining MSG. Just a thought

IMO Ron COTN 'IS' the better album when comparing it with Lick It Up. When I saw the L.I.U. show in Toronto in March '84 it was evident Vinnie's tenure with the band was ending, he simply just dropped his flying-V on the stage after his solo. By '84 KISS fans knew it was now the Gene and Paul Show. In Toronto the year before the COTN show was better attended, albeit noticeably stripped-down of pyro and lighting. Lick It Up was the last KISS song to be in regular rotation on Canadian FM radio. 'Forever' featured more-so on music video shows in '90.
