The Challengers ending, the flashback scenes, Art vs Patrick, Tashi's role and who wins the tennis match are just some of the elements of Challengers that need further discussion. In this breakdown of Luca Guadagnino's Challengers, I've explained it all. There are heavy spoilers in this video.
Challengers is a 2024 American romantic sports film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes. The plot follows a professional tennis champion (Mike Faist) who plots a comeback with the help of his wife (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy who retired after an injury, as he goes up against another player (Josh O'Connor), who also happens to be his former best friend and wife's former lover.

CHALLENGERS Ending Explained (Full Movie Breakdown) - Развлечения
Luca Guadagnino's Challengers has just come out in theatres and many who've watched it have debated the meaning of the ending. I breakdown the full movie and give my thoughts on it. Have you seen Challengers and what were your thoughts towards the new film starring Zendaya.
It was good and had so many meanings on different levels.
i thought of it as Patrick loves Art, Art loves Tashi, and Tashi loves tennis
Everyone thought this…. But it’s too simplified they were all intertwined
It’s really not as deep as people think
I think both love tashi and tashi love both of them but tennis more😭
She said at the beginning of the movie tennis is a relationship and for a second you can feel loved. I think at the end they had that moment
Yes. When she said that Art said something like and then you screamed
Josh O'Connor on the ending: Art regains his confidence, Patrick gets to play great tennis with his best friend again, and Tashi experiences the fire of her glory days vicariously through her two lovers.
"At the end of the film, they have found each other," O'Connor says. "They've been all searching for a way and getting it terribly wrong, searching for a way to satisfy that need, that hunger for each other. And they're all trying to find their way in different ways. For Art, maybe it's getting out of tennis and being with the family, reconnecting with his wife. For Tashi, it's finding that satisfaction in tennis that she lost by having her career stunted. For Patrick, it's also finding that feeling of flow when he was playing tennis with Art as a youngster, or watching Tashi playing tennis as a youngster."
@@frajoladellagato I don’t say that. The way they are passionate for each other and tennis is absolutely erotic through the film.
Loved the loud music, I waited so the random lady sitting next to me couldn’t hear me chew my snacks like a cow.
Hahahah
I loved the end scene, the final embrace and love between two boys, the relationship which Tasji talks about at the beginning of the film, the boys finally felt it and Tashi too when she screems with joy like she used to win the matches.
The soundtrack had me dancing in my seat the whole film
Was a bop from Trent Reznor
@@CortexVideos yes sir the legend
Guy from nine inch nails didn’t sound track Trent Reznor
In my opinion, this was Reznor's weakest soundtrack. The social network was a masterpiece. it sounded like he was just starting to mess around with a new music making program... after all, I've loved him forever.
According to the director: The director confirms that the ending brings everything full circle to the trio's pivotal hotel room make-out. "They are acting out for 13 years the possibility of going back to that hotel room to find again that beautiful moment of burgeoning desires and innocence," Guadagnino says. "And at the same time, to feel at ease with one another, the way they were there. So, throughout the entire arc, that's what they're trying to do. And finally, with the rivalry at that heightened level, the triangle finally found itself sitting in the same place, but now on the court."
That's why, the director explains, the movie doesn't end with any concrete statements about who wins the match or Tashi's heart. It's all about the match itself. "I needed to get this very, very visually amped up and really immersed for the audience to understand how much it meant for them not to win over the other, but to be back together, all of them," Guadagnino says.
Ex Tennis pro here, loved the movie btw but just for information, Art technically, definitely lost the very last point seen in the movie as he touched the net. In tennis if you come in touch with the net you loose the point. So at least we know that much
he also was physically over the net, which would’ve lost the point for him
I thought it was only the first point of a tie breaker? Meaning it definitely was not the point on who got that point or who won the game?
that he lost the first point of a final tiebreak?
still tells us almost absolutely nothing about the end of that match
Tashi knows about Patrick participation in the Challenger Tour, the scene when Patrick asks Tashi to talk at first she refuses then agrees, because Patrick saw her checking Atptour websites, indicates that she knows ever player activities including Patrick participation in the tournament
Leaving the determination of who wins the match recalls the ending of The Sopranos. It’s as if we don’t need to see Tony’s ultimate fate-either getting whacked or in jail. There is far more at play in Challengers than meets the eye. But some folks prefer obvious closure.
Patrick was in love with Art. Art was in love with Tashi. I think at the end they all are like fuck it, it is what it is let’s just accept the inevitable.
This was a great summary. Thanks!
TLDW: I am not a home wrecker.
American cinema needs more movies like this. Bravo to Guadagnino on another triumph.
Absolutely loved the film and the soundtrack made the match and arguments soooo intense!!! 😅
Thank you a lot!❤
Art was a "dead man walking" he was questioning his passion for tennis Patrick at 31 usually retirement age for sports people, didn't achieve his potential. Tashi was living vicariously thru Art's success for Art to retire meant her own metaphorical death. Tashi at the end realised she had accomplished unintentionally to revive Art's passion, he was already a top seed for the US Open. Patrick gets a spot in the US Open and an opportunity to become monetarily successful as a tennis player. A nit pick of this film is Patrick has the wood on Art, yet he struggles to win a $7000 Challenger event. Art somehow despite this fact is able to win million dollar Grand Slams ? Are there real world examples? I like the fairy tale ending, a washed up tennis player could win the US Open. It happened in soccer when Leicester won the English Premier League at odds of 500-1 but that's a team not an individual player
Title says Ending explained
*Proceeds to make a summary of the entire movie*
Also says full movie breakdown in brackets if you read that 🙄
I thought the ending was a cop-out to deciding which player should actually win the match. They could have had both of the men turn on Tashi after the match and befriend one another and had that be the finale. But ending on a the first tie breaker point by having the two players embrace one another was just weird. Also, if the guy married to her was mad at her for sleeping with him, why did he hit a serve through the air at his opponent’s head rather than at Tashi’s head? They dis an insufficient job at establishing that Tashi’s husband had turned on her after the reveal. I also don’t know why he might not suspect that it was just a lie and reference to get under his skin.
Exactly. I don't know why he would assume that it was done with good intentions. He was even smiling as he did it too. And to hug after? Makes no sense. I still have no idea what is going through each character's head during the ending since it's so poorly done
Well explained. I really loved the film, potion seller really sold one of his strongest screenplays.
sometimes pros are pros, exactly because of their unconditional love to their passion. and that’s f awesome. not good or bad, just beautiful. that unique power, without question, is definitely worth respecting and makes the difference. who won? easy, pro level tennis.
I'm definitely going to give you a like I don't like most videos from people even if I watch them fully but you're the only one I hope because I haven't watched the full video that is explaining the full movie without saying oh I don't want to spoil it for you I don't care I don't want to watch this movie just tell me
I was on the edge of my seat for that last act omfg
Unfortunately there are some editing mistakes towards the movie
For example?
@michaELis_tm idk what that dude noticed, but I personally noticed a couple continuity errors. One I can rmemeber is Zendaya standing up the first time all of them meet at the party, it cuts to a weird second shot where she was getting up and then already standing. Doesn't take away from the movie at all, but there were definitely a few little errors in there. Again, who cares tho when the movie was as good as it was and as visually striking as it was able to be.
@@GanjjaCat I noticed this as well, it’s something that is easy to spot for me but idk about other people
So who won at end ? Who she ended up with ?? We will never know , but it was so good movie !!
technically, art lost that final point, as he ended up being physically over the net and came into contact with it. in a real match, that will cost a player the point. no one knows what happens at the end, but the basic idea is that they all ended up together again. tashi was reunited with her love for the game of tennis by living vicariously through two of her lovers’ most passionate game, art was reunited with his confidence and friend, and patrick was reunited with his best friend.
This movie makes Zendaya Tennis and Trent Reznor all look amazing
Zendaya is objectively attractive tho 😂
tennis has always been a fascinating and beautiful sport, if you take the time to watch a match, specifically a grand slam tournament final or semi-final match
I think art and Patrick are somewhat into each other. Bi. Think about it.. the sauna scene is a big hint too.
I said this is a great gay love story between two friends turned lovers turned competitors. Who lose sight of the love for each other and the game by becoming distracted by Tashi. Only to have Tashi bring them back to each other and the game. But that’s just me. Nice to see someone else have a similar experience with the film.
Disagree. Patrick was bi but Art was straight and I think the film made that pretty clear by the end.
The ending was literally them having a “tunnel brothers moment”. 😂
I loved 'Challengers'.
4:05 no, he wouldn’t have been in the top 100, he even says that it would get him a spot in the qualifiers, top 100 get spots in the main draw
6:12 peculiar? Super common ritual amongst tennis players. Patrick’s serve is laughably bad throughout, and by far the unconventional and peculiar one.
7:19 he did try to use a hotel, so I don’t think it’s fair to say that he’s intentionally sleeping at women’s houses at every opportunity, just something he did out of necessity
@@vaapad1HSYea I noticed that too. Art’s serve is fairly straightforward. Many players start their serve that way. Patrick’s serve is how a lot of beginners serve before they learn the full service motion. It was kinda distracting 😂
insanee
Patrik is everybodys fav
Finally amovie with no comic book characters....good movie for us adults ..Zendaya mire gorgeous than ever
The soundtrack is so weird… electro music while playing tenis
So basically the movie is a love triangle 😂
So that's why the gay sounding club music plays throughout the movie
Sounds like any number of French movies.
I think you think the movie is way more gay than it is
that cause it is
I got bored and sleepy during
Sounds like one messy ass movie.
Big messy. I didn't see the ending. I left the theater
I was entertained. But it's not a romance. There weren't any romantic scenes. You wouldn't call softcore Skinemax a "romantic film". Wrong genre. This film I would call "Emotional Horror." Or maybe "Comedy for Narcissists."
The film is poorly titled. They should have called it "Awful People." The looping techno soundtrack was perfect in an ironic way. I was even adding my own lyrics half way in, with a Daft Punk robot voice. It goes like this... (kick it) "Awful. People. Awful. People. Aweful. People..." [beat beat beat beat] "Awful. People. Awful. People. People. People. People..." Every scene.
I swear on my mother's eyes, I knew the movie was Italian and had no idea who the director was. But it was also trying to be very French at times. Which was confusing. At one point I thought, "oh wait, maybe the director is French?" And then I went back and forth until I saw his name at the end.
And I think that identity crisis overall held it back from it's full potential. Kept it from shining as bright as it should have. We didn't need the kid to exist unless the writing included some confusion about who the father was. Go all the way or not at all.
I genuinely laughed at the ending. And I mean the filmmaker's choice for the last moment of the film. Like it didn't know that it wasn't a completely different movie like 'Rudy' or 'A Miracle on Ice or something'. But that made it even MORE entertaining. I laughed really hard for a good two minutes. Like "congratulations, awful people..." It was like they were celebrating that they had all three finally earned the threesome which they previously left on the table all those years ago hahaha... Genius ironic comedy. "We did it! We finally impressed ourselves equally enough that we can *all sleep with each other at the saaaaame tiiiiiime!* (queue the 'Chariots of Fire' song)
I've never wanted a 35 minute sequel so bad in my life! I have to know where they go from here... Do they all move in together. Taking turns being coached by her on the tennis court, while the odd-man-out does the babysitting? And each tennis tournament they compete for who gets to be middle pillow this month. Unless they have another perfect volley like that one and she takes the bed center. So both dudes get to sleep next to her. 🤔It's all deadly! 😂
The kind of gold standard ironic comedy that thinks they shot one kind of film. But wind up with a completely different film in the tank. Great scenes tho. Solid dialogue. That aspect reminded me of that movie 'Closer'. Without the tragedy of caring about anyone. Or the characters caring about anything other than themselves. 6/10
Yes, the protagonists are awful people. But i think the child shows one important thing: Art isn't mich interested in her, but sees in her a bonding to Tashi. For Tashi it's a bonding to Art, so she still be with him.
For me, the ending is not that open. Arts and Patricks friendship is still there, so Patrick let Art win for him and not for Tashi. This is why, he "tells" him the sex with her. But Tashi thinks, she won and doesn't realise, she lost both
Regarding the daughter, I totally agree. I remember during her first scene in the movie I was thinking “they want us to believe that little girl is their daughter?” Granted, that was solely based upon her hair being very dark and curly and it didn’t seem believable that Zendaya’s and Mike Faust’s characters having sandy brown and blonde hair, would have a daughter with hair that dark and curly, however in real life I do know that biology has done crazier things. Then, regarding what happened in Atlanta flashing back to either seven or eight years earlier and the little girl appearing to be about seven or eight years old, I was just waiting on some revelation that she was a product of that encounter but the movie made no mention of it. I would be willing to bet that was a part of the movie and it was cut from the final product. It has to be. The little girl looks more like a mix of Zendaya and Josh O’Connor than Zendaya and Mike Faist…however, again I’m well aware of the magic tricks that biology can play.
I would be willing to bet that all the scenes that would have taken this movie from being good to excellent were the ones that were cut.
Have you ever watched the deleted scenes from a movie you liked but didn’t love and you’re like “Ohhhhh, so x, y, and z was really supposed to happen but it got cut from the movie? Then you wonder why those particular scenes were cut as opposed to others that made it in the final version of the movie but did nothing to advance the plot whatsoever.
I truly feel like a lot of that took place during the final editing for this movie and we’ll wind up loving what the movie could have been when we finally get to see the deleted scenes or director’s cut of the movie. It’s a strong hunch that I have.
@@beautifulsurprise9424 oh I totally agree. It seemed like they shot it with another thing in mind. And then tried to edit out an hour to keep the pace higher. And ended up with a Frankenstein cut. It's a tale as old as time.
It happens to the best of them. And you can totally see the studio being like *"Hey Fellini... Nobody wants to see your art house version of 1996 Crash with tennis players instead of masochistic volunteer crash test dummies. We green lit this pic because Zendaya was attached. And told you to make a sexy tennis movie with her in a skirt. Cut it down by 45 minutes, or we will! Byeeee"* lol
I'd love to see the original though...
@@Redrose-ep2ry lol huh?? What movie did you watch? What do you mean "let him win"? That was the point of the end of the film. He didn't let him "do" anything. He used that pivotal moment to show both of them that he's on their level. And he's nobody's cuck. And that final rally was the result of both of them stepping up, getting that fire in their belly to compete and perform at their best again. And by receiving their own narcissistic approval of playing at their top potential, they had a breakthrough together. Like the old days when they were a team.
And she was thrilled at being able to bring that out of them... by cheating and manipulating them both. To be so competitive for her approval, admiration and respect. Which was the main thing they both wanted from her. She would give them each just a taste here and there over the years to keep them motivated to earn her favor.
It's a fantastic introspection of awful people. People who are competitive, even when it's something self-destructive or underhanded. "If you're not cheating, you're not trying" kind of people. Which was great! Where none of the characters gain any respect for anyone doing the right thing. Or pretend to. They only respect competitive behavior. They get turned on by other people lying, cheating and stealing. Zendaya's character wasn't turned on by two guys making out. She just loved that she could get them to do whatever she wanted. And stopped it happening when the attention no longer was on her. Essentially "focus on me, or I will lose interest."
It perfectly characterized her as someone who would say "I'm not a homewrecker", and then do everything in her power to wreck their friendship. She got what she ultimately wanted in the end. To feel effective. Since she could no longer dominate the tennis court... She dominated them.
That's why I wanted to see a short sequel. Where she takes them both into her bed. And has them competing in tournaments for her favor for the following month (i.e. sleeping next to her in the bed until the next tournament). Honestly I would have loved that as the final 15 minutes of the story. And not just a typical freeze frame on a sports feature's dream-come-true moment. Because it's not that kind of movie. If it was a "happily ever after" story for narcissists... let us see their quirky little version of happiness.
There was no moral to the story. No protagonist who suddenly realizes he was being played by what he coveted. Loving someone who just wants to manipulate you. No, they were all that person. All trying in their own way to get what they want, however they wanted it. Even the character who was getting tired of that lifestyle. It's like rooting for a serial killer who was getting sick of murder. And just wanted to give the simple life a try. But we're excited because they found that spark again. To go murder innocent hitchhikers again. Lmao... Awful people awful people awful people people people
@carpeimodiem goodness, you're simply amazing. I wish I was friends with that. That level of insight is just admirable. What a brilliant perspective 🫶🏻
Thats some gay bullshit

This video is only this guys view on the film and what he thought it meant. But hes one of the few people who viewed this film that way. I think the end is about them finally playing and enjoying tennis like they used to. So no the movie isnt about some gay content i think, but this channel’s view on the film is.
It’s literally by the same director who did call me by your name duhhhh

Movie sucked
I am a tennis fan. I have watched grand slams for 5 hours . My wife thinks there is something wrong with me ! When I saw a rotten tomatoes positive review of 89% I thought WOW we have to go . Whoever wrote the script might know something about romance ( although was kind of turned off when the two male leads started making out with Zendaya in the middle) but absolutely nothing about tennis. I think the final scene exemplifies How insanely GOOFY this movie was. The two men both jump over the net together and hug in the middle . In real life doing something that dumb would most likely get them banned from any professional tennis court for the rest of both their lives . In addition both players would both have severe injuries including perhaps a need for an emergency room visit. I watch many movies and can usually find something decent in even the worst of them. I couldn't find anything in this fiasco .The one positive I was able to take away was take rotten tomatoes with a grain of salt when deciding what film to see.
I found this entire woke rubbish highly disappointing and very boring. Zendaya deserves much better then that!
What does “woke” mean to you ?
