I really like how the writers had somebody in glee club with a view opposite of their almost universal "love yourself and everything about you" message it allowed the storyline to go deeper thanks to Santana's (hilarious) but valid point . I can't believe I'm saying this well done glee writers

I think they did a fairly ham-fisted job of it, but I think they wanted to do it as a "don't change for other people" thing. I still think that's silly, as people change for others all the time and it's a perfectly normal thing to do, but it's a nice thought.
My view on changing yourself is that if you want to (and it doesn’t hurt you or interfere with your health) then go for it but don’t change for anyone other than yourself.

Using a character's fictional traits is obviously fine since they are fictional, but when Glee constantly made jokes about Sam's mouth, Rachel's nose, Mercedes' weight, Tina's eyes, etc it felt tasteless and cruel, because at that point you're making fun of the actors and the things they can't control, not the characters.

I'm sorry but I disagree. Loving yourself doesn't mean you don't get to change. You can love yourself and still want to change things about yourself, both mentally and physically. Otherwise, loving yourself would also mean not to grow. Of course this shouldn't be taken to unhealthy extremes. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be touched at all. Everything can be risky if taken to extremes; that doesn't mean we shouldn't do it, just that we should be careful about it.

Had no effect on how I look on the outside. The operation literally cannot change how you look. They conflated rhinoplasty and septoplasty a bit here.
