- One of my most favorite movies of all time. In this scene Balian de Ibelin finally surrenders Jerusalem to Saladin on "acceptable" terms.

The way he delivers "I am not those men" is so good. Shows how much he despises them and their actions. Great writing and acting.
Acting was definitely a big part of this masterpiece. Everyone did a great job.

I love this scene. The amount of mutual respect shown by Saladin and Balian is priceless. Both men accomplished what they wanted. Balian saves lives and Saladin gets Jerusalem.
For me it is the most impactful statement in the movie. Showing that he is an honorable man. That and "Jerusalem is worth nothing and everything." So good. So true.
Good old story and yet good movie.
For those who dont know when saladin says Jerusalem is worth nothing he means in a strategic way its worth nothing but as a place for worship and for his people its worth everyrhing

Its a major city, a hub for trade and close to the sea. Its also a fortress in and of itself and a melting pot of cultures from three continents.

@@KalashVodka175 if we’re talking trading cities then Tyre was the more valuable target with its route on the Silk Road and position by the sea. Jerusalem is out of the way and don’t unite the land like Ascalon, Jaffa or Tyre do. It’s strategically unimportant but religiously crucial.
There is no better sign of respect than sending your own physicians to your enemy. That is pure class. Men like these were badasses

It says a lot about Saladin when the Crusaders completely changed their view of him during the Third Crusade, particularly Richard I. Saladin impressed them with his chivalric manner and how he treated non-Muslims under his rule. The reason he is still respected and even admired in the West today is because of the Crusaders who returned home and spoke of Saladin in a favourable light, when at the start of the Crusade he was thought of as Satan’s son and one of the heads of the dragon of the Apocalypse, for taking Jerusalem.
He was equal to Ibelin in Chivalry. What a wonderful story of mutual respect on opposing sides, and even dam straight admiration for each other. Reminds me of how British Commonwealth soldiers gave funeral to the Red Baron with full military honor once they finally shot him down, some event felt sad once they realized whom they had killed. He was thought of as a "Gallant and Worthy Foe" - inscription on his cross - by them.
While Sladin was more honorable than most at the time, this scene isn't accurate. He allowed safe passage to those that could afford it, those who couldn't were sold into slavery. Most were able to afford it, but there were still thousands that were made slaves.
@@Bruinsbigestbear You're quite right - 15 000 in total. I mentioned this in one of mine other reactions to another comment. But that being said, the Rich of Jerusalem refused to pay for the poor and rather carried out chests full of gold with them out of the city, and the noble people didn't even have to pay any ransom for themselves. On top of that, when a group of veiling women approached Saladin at one point, he ordered to released all captive men in his possession , and personally guaranteed safe passage to those women - "for free". He had to capture the city and he had to do it in a way he wouldn't loose face. All considered - he gave the Christians a lot of "space" to safely leave as free people.
@@pibmovieclips I must give an additional info about Muslim tradition and the social condition of medieval period. For the very poor enemies who have defeated, sometimes is better to be slave. The reasons is.
1. They still can stay and live peacefully and protected ( by their master) in that city.
2. Their life have more purpose or at least a jobs, not as beggar or face misery because of very poor condition
3. The slave system in islam guaranteed protection, well daily ransoom for food & shelter& drink& and even from attack by strangers, including their master Neighborhood and brothers, so the slaves are well protected by the law.
4. No force for the slave to follow their master Islam, they can stay with their faith as long as they like, free from taxes, and can pay for their freedom while they have enough to pay, anytime as they want it.
Thats it, the benefits can be more useful for very poor woman, especially if that womans become slaves of higher ranks of Muslim wifes
@@Cleeon I'm sorry Cleeon, but slavery can't ever be better than freedom. Even if it means you die. Many wars were fought for Freedom (and died for).
If the "purpose" as you call it is generating wealth for someone else, then that purpose has no meaning since you're working for "free".
If you're not generating wealth for yourself but your master, then your master's is not protecting you - but his "assets". He's not providing you with food and water out of his gratitude or compassion, but so that you can generate wealth for him. It's business. Slavery was always business and still is (in some places).
Even if your master can't legally kill you, and you will be eventually free (as it was the case for most slaves in USA in 19th century), If you never generate wealth for yourself - earning wage (also exclusive to US slaves to my knowledge - without consent of their master) - that would allow you to be independent once your slavery is over, it was still just pure exploitation.
I can understand that many would have died in misery and without care during medieval period - thus you say they would be better off working for someone who takes care of them - but that life had only the meaning of "free workforce" for their master that would only give them the absolute minimum necessary to sustain their life so that they can create wealth for him (paying for itself and more) and ultimately no meaning after all.
Who would like to work-himself into his grave with nothing to show for whilst never been able to do anything of his free will or leave?
Either way, look at current situation. 18th generation wanting to play victim card for their ancestors being slaves - on a wage and contract with expiry date in most cases; and with their masters no being able to legally kill them (in all cases) - all of that way before the Abolishment of slavery across all western societies; and tell me again how even "traditional" slavery would have been better for them.
I'll borrow and paraphrase what Robert E Lee wrote to president Franklin Pierce on December 27, 1856 -
"The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, physically, and socially. The painful discipline they are undergoing is necessary for their further instruction as a race, and will prepare them, I hope, for better things - BUT, there are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil."
The Evil White Man's Culture (as portrayed today), had long ago abolished it's own profitable business (and good portion of economy) because despite of thinking that the slaves "are better here than (insert country of origin) and hopefully it will mean their brighter future, slavery (any form) is EVIL" - and it was in direct conflict with the forming of values that: "MEN ARE ALL EQUAL, AND FREE".
No need for a revolution, no need for a "struggle" between masters and their slaves. White man even fought the other white man (and won) that couldn't let go of his "business" because the forming "western culture of the evil white man" couldn't let it go on no more.
Instead of being celebrated, this is now being demonized in our current "clown world", where everything seems to be "backwards or upside down".

@Duck-Rider yes and no. To men like him and Balian, it's not worth it. If anything, Jerusalem was not strategic in defense or supply lines. Why he says "everything" is because Jerusalem is a symbol- and THAT'S why it was worth it.

And it’s a true sentiment for us muslims, Jerusalem and palestine is the holy land, it’s the land of the prophets and the land of martyrs, it’s also the land of judgement day, it holds a very special place for Muslims that Christians and jews really don’t understand.

It shows that Saladin and Balian were of the same mind regarding the futility of these holy wars, yes. Balian wasn't even fighting to defend Jerusalem at this point, he was fighting to protect the Christians inside from what he thought the Muslims would do if they took the city. I think now that until Saladin reassured him otherwise, Balian was convinced that Saladin's troops would slaughter every Christian inside Jerusalem - after all, the Christians slaughtered every Muslim inside Jerusalem when they took the city back during the First Crusade, so Balian was worried that Saladin would retaliate in kind.
I love how the surrender wasn't treated as a defeat with sadness and a felling of loss, but as a victory. Because it really was a victory, their goal was not drive salladin away. It was to survive and they did it, thus they won.
it was 100% a defeat lol it was such a crushing defeat it ended the crusader kingdoms and then.....the 4th...abomination occurred.
They do not win one bit. It was only because of Saladin mercy. They survived.
It's still considered a win.
The people won't be slaughtered
In war to survive is to win and to realize it doesn't solve anything. It only brings suffering to all sides. To show mercy to ones enemy, how many people do that now at days?

@@texasallstar6969 He didn't say it wasn't a defeat, he said the soldiers didn't treat it like a defeat because for them they accomplished their goal and why they celebrated. I mean he is right historically as well, the real Balian of Ibelin didn't want to win, but only survive, so he gained his victory there.
Love the reaction of the knights as Balian stated the terms, they're not heartbroken that they have to give up, they're exhausted, fought for the whims, politics, and philosophies of lords and kings that wouldn't even acknowledge them a sideways glance. They get to live, to go home again, a genuine reaction

This is why Saladin is one if my favorite historical figures! Such an honorable and respectful ruler. Probably one of the sultans that managed to unite all of the muslims under his banner

To show mercy to your enemy when they are defeated is to live with honor. To punish or kill someone you have defeated and they are defenseless is to degrade yourself. There is no honor in it, only shame.
It depends on your philosphy and reasoning. Romans never thought of it like that. They used term vae victis, which means that those who are defeated by you live life that you decide and for romans it was not even ethical question, it was more like nature's law.

Salahuddin was a great muslims leader, he was a muslim scholar, he was festing most of his life, he memorized Qur'an, he donated most of his wealth to the poor and he died without a single coin in his pocket, that's why he was a master of tactical, military leader and a good sultan, something that even not single king ever close to his quality today

Saladin is the epitome of the phrase "Mercy is not a weakness, but a strength"
I first watched it when I was in college thinking its just a generic crusader movie but after the credits rolled, I see myself impressed with Saladin. He's a great ruler even though his war exploits are marred by defeats but because he embodies deep wisdom, fairness, humble, and most of all, commanded respect from both his soldiers and enemies. He striked me as a man who can give you wise and compassionate advice on how to be a better human being. Had he live presently, he would've easily been an influential figure. He truly embodies his philosopy and faith not just in understanding but in his actions. That's coming from a devout Catholic. What a great man. 👍

I was one of the participants in this wonderful cinematic work by the great director Ridley Scott in Morocco in the city of Ouarzazate exactly in the month of April and May 2004. It was one of the most beautiful days I spent. For reference only, the sights of the sea and ships are also in Morocco, specifically in Essaouira.
Wow that must have been an amazing experience. If I have one regret, it's that I wish more people watched Scott's Director's Cut of the movie, which restores 45 minutes and helps tell a more complete story (he unhappily made the cut because he was forced to by the studio).

Seeing the west have such a positive view on one of our greatest heroes in history is so heartwarming and puts a smile on my face. As a Muslim I give my respect to you and thank you for taking the time to understand and enjoy the character that salahuddin was. Our wars may have tore loved ones from us but in the end there was a new found respect and brotherhood forged that would last through the ages.

This film is one of the greatest ever made. I'm not sure what the guys name is who plays Salahuddin, but hes one of the best actors I've ever seen. every line he delivered has stayed with me for a literal decade and a half.
Ghassan Massoud, a great Syrian actor, played Salahuddin (or as we say in English, Saladdin). Ironically he was originally cast in Syriana (another great film) but turned down the role because he thought the film would be anti-Arabic - Massoud later said it was the biggest regret of his career (and I think he would have been much bigger if he had done the film, which came out the same year as Kingdom.)

In the script of the film, I've read that there's a scene where Balian and Saladin meet for the first time right after the aftermath of the carnage of the Hattin, where Saladin tells Balian how he knew his father and was nearly killed by him on the horse. In that scene, Saladin offers Balian a chance to live if he promises not to fight the muslims anymore or else he'll be killed, but Balian refuses after Saladin refuses to not march and attack Jerusalem and kill everybody inside the walls. He lets Balian live and go back to Jerusalem nonetheless.
That's more accurate. Balian marched with them. Idk why they deleted that.
King Baldwin is honourable as Salahuddin because when he sent Belian to İbelin says you should protect first Muslims and Jewish. Orlando Bloom has played respectful attitudes on this film. I watched the film two times. Thanks Ridley Scott

This was a ballsy bluff by Balian, he knew for certain that had the fighting continued, he and every single Christian knight and defender would die, and that they would not likely have the time or man power to follow through his threat of burning mosques or other Muslim holy places.
Yet he still went out there and straight up threatened Saladin to his face, despite being in such a losing position. Brass balls.
I doubt that he would be the man to destroy out of spite anyway, as you said, it was a bluff. He never had it in him.
I think Saladin realised this. That Balian didn't want to fight but would do for his beliefs. I think by the time when he offered no terms, Saladin understood. So he gave them an out, and allowed them to leave because to do so only benefits all.
Saladin was not in a good position either. He had taken too long and lost to many men in a siege that was supposed to be easy since the crudaders didn't have a real army.

@@gabrielcastillo9745 even if he did, he still had a larger army and more resources, so if they had fought, Salahuddin would have won for sure. Its just that everyone was tired of fighting at this point, nobody wanted another war, not the Muslims or Christians, everyone was exhausted.
There are so many great, quotable lines from this movie. "A king may move a man" and "I put no stock in religion" are my favorites. Apparently Balian's too since he synthesizes them to teach the lesson to Sibylla.
So many deep and meaningful points about the past and the present are made in this movie through very brief and very poignant statements. A very good movie in my humble opinion.
The real Balian was not a commoner. He was Balian of Ibelin, his father was Barisan of Ibelin, a knight in the county of Jaffa who had been granted his titles after a revolt lead by Hugh II of Jaffa.
The entire beginning of the film (the bit in France) is completely made up. He wasn't a blacksmith and grew up in Jerusalem.
The bit about the siege of Jerusalem in 1099 is true, the crusaders did butcher around 40000 Muslims and Jews when they sieged the city. However, later the crusaders adopted a more inclusive society within the walls and all religions were granted the right to preach without discrimination. Salah ad-din did also grant safe conduct to every Christian, including the nobles and the queen.
Balian, paid 30000 denars of his own money to free 70000 people who couldn't get the money from the treasury when the surrender was accepted. Both him and Salah ad-din were extraordinary men, great respect for each other and its a shame that while Salah ad-din is remembered so little of Balian is known today. Also the Christian knights returned to Europe and recorded not tales of an "satanic despot" but a great admiration and respect for Salahuddin that left a legacy still going today.
One further thing. Salahuddin was Kurdish, not Arabian or Egyptian. He was born in Tikrit, which is situated in northern present day Iraq, he started out working alongside his uncle who was a general (Shirkuh) and he climbed up the political and military castes with speed due to some of his amazing victories agaisnt the Nubians, Byzantines and Egyptians. Like Balian he was also extraordinary generous and when he died he gave his wealth away to his subjects.
You should also be aware, that the whole priest scenario, in terms of converting and repenting is also complete fabrication. In fact, the Christians themselves fought tirelessly for days, almost certainly under the impression that the Muslims were going to butcher them as they had done to the Muslims, hence their celebration when Balian was able to secure their safety after the siege.
Saladin was Turkish in every sense. His mother tongue was Turkish. His mother was a Seljukid princess from Antioch region. His brothers had heavily Turkic names such as Turanshah and Gokbori.
He and his father were raised and protected by Seljukid Atabey/Governor of Mosul, Noureddin Zangi, another unifying Turkish leader.
Saladin's army was Turkish and there is an account that he spoke Turkish with his army all the time. There are records that he spoke Turkish in the palace as well as all his descendant Sultans and the kingdom be built was called as "State of the Turks" (dawlat al-Turk) by Arab chronicles and poets of that time.

When another poet claimed that "poetry is never correctly valued by Turks", Saladin got offended and sent him a sizable amount of money to prove the poet wrong.
Another account says that ambassadors came to him from his maternal uncle, who was the sultan of great Seljukid empire. His close chroniclers did not comment anything about Kurdish ancestry, but there is only one contemporary Kurdish historian Ibn Asir who claimed that he was Kurdish and all later accounts are based on his claim.
Entire middle East was ruled by Turks at that time and there are tens of evidence of Turkish ancestry of Saladin, but no such supporting evidence except Ibn Asir's claim.

I like how Balien uses destroying Jerusalem's holy places as leverage for better terms of surrender against Saladin until Saladin tells him that he'd basically be doing him a favor if he did. Balien just pauses and is like, "whelp, fuck..... uhhh... we'll break your army though!"
Saladin is just like, "With what, your women and children? Because you have more of them than men right now."
After that Balien just looks away and stops trying to negotiate LOL (1:58). You can even see the resignation on Balien's face and the pity on Saladin's when he slightly smirks like, "Fine.... I'll let everyone go... if you trust me. A Muslim :)"
Basically forcing Balien and everyone in Jerusalem to refute what Christians were told to believe; that Muslims couldn't be trusted. A decision that would echo around the known world to be false once Balien agreed and was able to safely evacuate the city per their final terms of surrender.

At first Salahadin did wanted to destroy the population of Jerusalem. To show Europe a lesson. After he saw the casualties and had a PR reunion decided it was Better for everyone involved and future . To be peacefull

Not to take away anything from your correct statement, but the movie is full of lines like this. Each scene has a meaningful and interesting dialogue.
All of this combined into beautiful cinematography and masterful acting, and 16years later it is still my most favorite movie from this period, by far. Second only to Saving Private Ryan in all of historical movies and there are some other "masterpieces" like New World (2005), Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), and Gladiator (2000) that immediately come to mind too.
Yeah, hopefully we don't need to wait another 16y to see one like them again.
Even if I had to expand it into all of movies, I'm sure this would be on my top10 of all time list anyway - and there are many "masterpieces" out there to consider alongside of it.
@@pibmovieclips this movie is most definitely an underrated classic, blooms best role I think, there’s a few movies that fly under the radar that are good, iron clad was one that came out in 2012 I think, very good acting by Paul giamatti in that one, newer ones too like the king on Netflix and outlaw

I think the most underrated part is that Saladin smirks at the idea that Balian threatened to destroy the churches and mosques. It's like for a split second he was like: "not a bad idea"
Both Saladin and Baldwin in the movie were men of reason above all, beset by religious fanatics and people who use religion to further their hedonism.
His smirk turns into a slight frown when Balian says Saracens would die.

I dont like movies but i have watched this One probably 15 or 20 Times... Its a piece of art so much Spiritual meaning in it and on this scene
God I love how Balian says that he won't surrender, with the most violent intent possible however justified or not, and Salahadin counters with a peaceful solution which is what everyone really wants but thinks is impossible. This is such an awesome character moment.
Its such a good counter, though the sad reality is that this isn't always offered, or followed through with. Of course most conquerers would never destroy a sieged city and its people, who the hell is gonna be there to do work after? The thing that the christians in the city fear may be mass murder, but most fear oppression and brutality, and of course in that time (and in the current time, lets be honest) rape, or at least this is my interpretation of the princess cutting her hair short to be seen as a boy, though there could be a seperate, more character driven reason.
On another note I would FUCKING LOVE to see one of those "medieval *something* expert reacts to movie armor realism" do one about this movie, I don't know enough about that stuff to know if these helmets or armors or shields or weapons are period appropriate or centuries off, I'm really curious about it.
With the new mordhau update I might even be able to replicate several outfits, though eastern armor is still lacking simple realist cosmetics in my opinion, even with the simpler helmets and medium armor, not enough variants. I can *literally only dream* of a time where there will be as many north african, arabic, and middle eastern armor choices as there are european armors, though that won't ever happen. Like I said, I can only dream.
Yeah just think how much wisdom and strength it takes in that moment to not give into emotion and launch a battle that will kill tens of thousands. The weight of words in these parlays is immense
During the crusades most of their armor is legit in the movie.
Cavalry kite shields, long swords/arming swords.
The helmets are correct. The spears, bows and crossbows.
Most of the European knights and soldiers worn mail armor and padded armored
Ladies and gentlemen, I feel that the entire Game of Thrones television adapted series was extremely worthless because they copied everything (music, war concepts, etc) from the Middle Ages events.
I like this TV adaptation series far better because it depicts events closer to true history.

In reality it was the other way around. Balian only convinced him to accept surrender by threatening to kill Muslims and destroy their holy sites.

I disagree... Orlando Bloom was always a really bad actor. The Saladin's actor was great, but Orlando was just reading lines like a robot

One of the most epic movies of my youth and still even more powerful now that I'm older and understand it better.
Everything about this film is perfect, id pay top dollar for a Ridley Scott epic series.

Why Saladin focused on his name pronunciation twice? Because in Arabic, Shalahuddin (صلاح الدين) from words "shalih" means "right(eous)" and "din" means faith/deeds.
As he was named, he explained that he is a righteous man who believe in faith to God, so he showed compassion and good virtue even to their enemies, as one of Muslim/Islam war ethics is never killed unharmed non-believers and not destroying non-believers religious/praying places.

And that the true bro-romance happened between Saladin and Richard (regardless), with them two building some bridges and mutual respect between their cultures.

There is so very much that Ridley Scott brought into our experience, that this continues to be the single best, all time favorite for me. Less a movie, this was also a testament.
