- IMPORTANT: Many ferns are poisonous! Be sure you have the right one before eating. The Ostrich fern does not grow wild in all countries, so its wise to research the latin name and see what is written about it in your own language before you head out to forage.
In this video I teach you everything I know about a great wild vegetable, the OSTRICH FERN fiddlehead (Matteuccia struthiopteris). I go through Identification, taste and preparation.
Remember to identify the Ostrich Fern properly, as we do have some toxic ferns. And do not forage more than a third of each crown, otherwise you will kill the whole plant.
Ostrich ferns should be cooked for 15 minutes before you eat them, otherwise they might cause some stomach ache.

I am not a professional on the topics here, I only share my personal knowledge as an inspiration for you. All foraging and consuming of wild plants is at your own risk. Maria og skogen/Maria and the forest does not take any responsibility for harm that may occur from this. Always do your research before foraging, and never eat something you are uncertain about.
VERY informative. Love that specific identifiers are shown and similar plants are compared and their differences identified, where to find it, how to prepare, cook and store it. Covered everything I needed to know!
I am so glad you found it useful! Thank you for you kind comment :-)
I'm a novice forager and gardener. I appreciate your informative video. Thank you.
Really glad it was helpful!
@@Mariaandtheforest The only wild ferns are pretty far away and I have a big yard. Large raised bed gardens I use for perennial vegetables on the east side of the house is full sun, but the sw corner is in dappled shade and low moist ground. I'm going to grow ostrich ferns there.
@@kevinschloesser6812 so cool! Best of luck with it 😊😊
Thanks for sharing your lovely day of harvesting Ostrich fern, cooking and talking about it. Amazing nature. Cheers from the top of the mountain.
Hi! Thank you for you comment, as always
Thank you Maria! Can’t wait to try my first in a week or two based on current growth. Appreciate the identification tips. I had done some research last year but now I’m certain I have the right ones!
Awesome! I hope you like them :-)
Very interesting Maria. I never cease to be amazed by your ability to find a free three course dinner when out for a walk. I wonder what's for dessert !
Haha, thank you Mark! I definetively have some funny desserts up my sleeve, might be a video about that too if I find the time :-)
Such a beautiful and fun video!!!... thank you so much María! I am going to search through a fern forest close to my home to see if this specific fern is there! Will let you know!
Thank you Saray. It will be very interesting to see if you find it in your climate!
Your room in the second half of the video is beautiful! I'm jealous of your book cases and comfy reading chair
Thank you ♡ it was a great room for sure! This was where we were living before in Bergen (some old footage). Books were not all mine unfortunately! I look forward to building a similar room in the future ♡
Yuuum, and as always beautifully shot / edited Maria! These ostriches look delicious, in the stores here they'll be called 'Fiddlehead Ferns'.. I think I'll go look for some this evening actually.
Haha thank you Ethan
thank u so much for making this!! super informative, exactly what I was looking for
That makes me very happy to hear. Thank you :-)
Well done. Thank you.
I'm having a feed of Fiddleheads tonight. Find them any where in Nova Scotia. You'll see people picking them right from the road side ditch. Lol
Sounds great ♡
Good stuff!
Indeed 😁
well done video
i know that u can eat all of the species but u need to cook them at least twice and change water each time, it depends on the species some u need to cook up to 5 times, and the most of chemical that makes u ill its in the protection layer of the plants i haven't tried yet, its just my research from last couple of years.
Back in the Philippines, we cook it in coconut milk
That sounds so good. Thank you for the tip!
Supert altså!!! Du gjør hele verden lysere for mange! 🦌
Takk Silja
When about can we start picking dandelions (løvetann)? I've read in the papers to let them be because the bees need them, but for how long should we wait :) ?
I am not sure. But I think it also depends on the amount. If there is a lot I usually forage some, but if not I leave it for the bees :-)
Takk :)
