hello! what oil do you recommend and does it come from the factory for this n42 engine?

BMW recommends Castrol oil ( 0w-30 or 5w-30), so I use the same Castrol 0w-30, in UK climate

You should use thicker oil because the engine is very sensitive!

😅 Sorry, I can't agree to that. You need to use the right oil for the right environment. ( Where I live 0W-30 is what the car needs) You should use the oil that the car manufacturer recommends.

Ok sorry I thought you used 0W-20 but it’s 0W-30 which is fine I guess. I would say the manufacturers usually recommend thinner oils because this is how the engine is more effiecient but the engine components are not protected and lubed as well. Also oil pressure is better with thicker oil. I just had to repair the Valvetronic on the N42 because the previous owner did not use the right oil and change oil often enough. I will use 5W-40 now and change it every 10.000km max. Maybe Castrol Edge 0W-40 would be good for you

You got it the other way around. Thicker oil takes longer to reach all the bearings and locations where it should be.
You use thicker oil on old engines, where the cylinders' bores get worn and don't seal.
You are correct thicker oil will give you more oil pressure, but that isn't good. Engines are built on thigh tolerances, increasing the pressure can lead to faster wear and engine damage over time.
Valvetronic is a part that will break on the N42 engine, you can't escape that, but regular services will make your car's engine last.
I do the oil changes after 5000 km. These aren't new cars anymore, it's best to keep an eye on the engine.

You should run the engine for at least 20 minutes with system cleaner because of carbonation ☺️ but just recommend

No carbonation for a PFI engine. That's for DI and diesels.

so thin oil in this engine?? hahaha..friend, these engines are already quite old, very sensitive and hot, so you poured water in it... you need at least 5w40 for that engine.. 0w30 goes in the latest engines...

Sadly on an old abused and worn engine you are 100% correct. If the owner doesn't do regular oil changes and doesn't looks after the engine, 10w40 is the last effort before chucking it out.
For the engine on this exact car 0w30 is what it needed.
