Made one with your instructions, and it works fantastic! No fuel or any chemical starter needed, just some rolled newspaper and within 10 to 15 min you have the perfect charcoal! Thank you alot!

Awesome build. I'm going to make one simply because it would be cooler than buying one.

I've been told that I too spend too much time making things that I could just buy at a local store. But, there's satisfaction in making things yourself.
Here's an idea I thought of as I was watching the video...You'll need to drill 2 more holes and supply 2 more nuts for this idea.
Take the bottom portion that you cut out and threw away and drill 2 holes in the center that match the spread of the bolts which are going through the wooden handle. After you put the nuts on which secure the bolts to the wooden handle, put one more nut on each bolt and screw them down until they're about and inch away from where the outside of the can will be. Slide your newly pre-drilled bottom portion onto the bolts, then put another nut on each bolt. Attach the can and put the nuts/washers on the inside of the can. Tighten the 3rd and 4th nuts which secure the bolts to the can and then tighten the 2nd nut towards the can to snug the bottom portion against the 3rd nut. Bend the bottom portion to somewhat match the shape of the can and you now have a make-shift heat shield.
Like I said, that just popped into my head...not sure how much heat it would actually keep off your hands if you're not using a mit.
    Thanks for the video!

Thanks, Great Video!! You just saved me a few bucks from not buying a 'ready made' charcoal chimney. I'm gonna use a large coffee can for mine and this project will only cost me the price of a few nuts and bolts, a couple bucks at most at Lowe's!!! Thanks Very Much!!!!

Much better than other guides I've seen which expect you to have your own drill press.

I made it, and it works great. I used tack wire because I don't have any mettle coat hangers. The wood handle was made from a piece of trimmed 2 by 2 post board. I used a nail to punch the small holes instead of a drill. I live in Mexico and I could not find a charcoal starter anywhere even at costco or Walmart. Thanks for the amazing simple direction. Thank you for posting this.

There's some salty people on here. Not sure why they're watching the video if they're going to complain and go buy one. For instance, the smaller capacity chimney is better for me when camping. I need only 24-30 briqs to get my dutch oven going. Thanks Stan, it's brilliant.

I made one almost like this. Couldn't find my church key so I used a step drill bit and made 3/4 inch holes instead. Works great. Doesn't take long at all to have a rip roarin' fire.
Only change I might make next time is to add a second can or maybe a half a can to the top. Then I could raise the floor to make a bit more room for paper and I'd have more room up top too.

Hacksaw for cutting coat hangers! Do you have carbide coat hangers? Lol.
Actually liked the presentation. You made several needed points plus the coat hangers allow better air flow than using the lid.

Excellent! Consider countersinking those bolt heads so they are not exposed. You could probably flatten those sharp church key cuts or just cut them off and debur, friction will hold the paper in place. This is a good option if you have all of the materials to do it.
I took the easy way out, I bought a Weber Chimney at Home Depot. I didn't have the materials or tools.

Thanks man you save my day nice DIY. Just to mention if the newspapers are soaked up in vegetable oil they will light up more easily and more completely. Place the chimney on a hollow brick with some newspapers inside it lit up marvelously and the time for the charcoal to be ready was greatly reduced. thanks man

  • @johndetrude7556

The #1 Son lost my Weber chimney (dummy) and I made one from a coffee can. Took about 4 minutes. Drill holes wherever you like but two holes close to the top rim, opposed 180. Put tie wire or coat hanger through those top holes. Make that loose so it doesn't interfere with charcoal loading. Put crumpled newspaper in the bottom of the can (one sheet), fill with charcoal, light newspaper with flame.

Thank you! Nuts and bolts can be purchased at a hardware store or home center. The wooden handle was cut from a sassafras limb, then the bark was peeled off with a knife. The sassafras limb came from our nearby woods. You could probably use any good hardwood. When you're using the charcoal chimney, just be sure to always use an oven mitten or hot pad when you grab the handle. It'll get HOT!

If you're strapped for materials you can do this whole thing with a can opener, bottle opener, nail and a couple coat hangers. You will need 2 oven mitts to dump the charcoal out or just knock the thing over with your grilling tongs and use the tongs to remove the hot can.
