I just did my first 12-mile hike (total 10 hrs with rests) with my 30-lb pack in my Salomon SpeedCross 5's, which I initially bought a few years ago to do Spartan races, and they did fantastic. No issues whatsoever! I require a stability shoe with an arch and also have a narrow foot. I wore Darn Tough socks.
You are absolutely right… I might not be a Thru Hiker, but I hike enough to warrant the proper footwear. Everybody’s feet are so different. I struggle all the time because I have different size feet due to a mountain bike foot injuries and surgery . I love the ultras lone peaks that definitely works for me. Personal choice only … great advice you are giving as always …by the way I love the way Forest is perched.. happy hiking
Great advice! I thought my go to shoes were the Hokas, but after I wore out my first pair, next is not the same. I have Ultras that I am wearing out as around town shoes, because after one backpack trip, they clearly were not enough support. I haven’t tried insoles but I will. I use insoles in various work/designer shoes, so yes, will try in trail runners. Thank you.
I so agree with you about shoes being one of the most important pieces of backpacking gear! I've struggled with the shoe issue and plantar fasciitis too. I just did a video about my shoe journey and PF as well. lol I've been using Super Feet insoles but will check out the Spenco ones. Thanks for the video!
Thank you, Joey! Yep, shoes are literally the foundation of a successful through hike. Am just starting to watch this video and have to comment on sweet Forest’s sitting position on the couch. 🤣😆😂😁. Wish he had stayed around. 😄. Lucky you, to get to work at an outfitter’s store! And they are lucky to have such an experienced hiker like you working for them.👍 OK….now I will continue to listen and learn. Maybe someday you can talk about warm gloves? They seem to be an elusive Holy Grail. ☺️
That’s a great idea on the gloves! I find one thing that really helps is making sure they aren’t too tight, because if they’re snug, they restrict circulation and your hands feel more more cold.
Thank you so much for the advice. I've only recently made the commitment to thru-hike the PCT, but it's still a few years away. Possibly needing proper inserts is something that hadn't occurred to me. I'm also now thinking that trying to save a little money by finding previous years' shoe models might not be a good idea. After all, being stored in a warehouse for 2+ years wouldn't be any different than sitting in a closet, would it.

Lol…Forest thinks he’s a cat some days!
@@JoyfulRambler Nothing wrong with that…soaking up the rays 😎
A backpacker's shoe journey is unique to say the least. After many pairs I finally settled on some Topos.
Those are great shoes!
