      Cynthia,
Please consider scheduling a consultation with me. It will make a huge difference in the rest of your life and prevent a fracture. All you have to do is go to MenopauseTaylor.ME to schedule.
      Here's how a consultation works:
      1) You would schedule a one-on-one consultation at my website, MenopauseTaylor.ME, choosing a time that is convenient for you. I do consultations on Skype, FaceTime. Facebook Messenger, What’s App, and the phone. (But very shortly, I’ll have my own video platform embedded in my website.)

      2) I would send you an email to confirm that you are scheduled for the stated time, and invite you to send me as much information about yourself as you please. You can make it brimming with details and tell me about your reproductive life, any gynecologic problems you've had, your symptoms of peri-menopause, and your symptoms of post-menopause. You can include all your fears, concerns, and goals for your menopause management. You may also send me any labs, mammogram results, bone density results, etc. that you would like me to include in designing your protocol. If you want to adhere to a certain category of management options (herbs or diet & lifestyle, or whatever), you should tell me that. I will give you a 5-day deadline for sending all materials, and will not accept anything after that date.
      3) I'll get busy creating a document that gives you all the education you need to understand absolutely everything, points out the pros and cons of each option, and tailors it all to YOU, using the information you have provided. The document will be loooooong. Most are over 30 pages.
      4) I will send you the document by email 72 hours before your consultation. You will benefit greatly by reading it in advance. Light bulbs will go off like crazy, and if you're like most women, you'll feel that you've already gotten your money's worth.
      5) During your consultation, we will review the document and address any issues you want in order to fine tune everything and determine your best options. I'll tell you exactly how to find the right kind of professional, how to have the conversation in order to get what you want, and the nuances of things like guidelines and insurance. I leave nothing unaddressed.
      6) You will go to a professional of your choosing in order to get the actual hormones or whatever you choose to use.
      7) After the first consultation, I'll hold your hand (forever if you want me to). In other words, you'll be able to schedule mini-consultations (30-minute, in addition to full consultations) whenever you need to. I'll keep records of your situation. Most women schedule mini-consultation whenever they go to the doctor and don't understand what he or she said, or why. I translate. I make sense of everything. Most schedule mini-consultation whenever they have a new test and they want me to explain the results. And all schedule mini-consultation whenever their situation changes and they need to re-weigh and re-balance their options.
The time you spend with me will make everything about working with any other professional so easy. And they will love the fact that you have an actual education rather than a bunch of misconceptions that you got from the Internet. If your initial hormone regimen is not right, you'll want to consult with me before going to your doctor. I can prepare you for what to expect and what to request.
So, that's my role. And nobody else on earth does this kind of thing but me. So, I hope you schedule a consultation and let me hold your hand (figuratively).
I hope to meet you soon!

Thank you for explaining that so well. Sitting with my DXA scan… T score -2.2 that was 2 years ago aged 46 pre menopause. I have been complaining of peri menopausal symptoms for the past 2 years and my doctor looks at me blankly 😐 she has tested me for everything under the sun but provided no advice or suggestions re hormone replacement. Given my T score I think it may have been a good idea. She must have looked at the Z score, which is -2…. I am now armed with the knowledge and booking another scan this week for an update. I am also seeing a specialist with the hope to get better advice regarding menopause and possible HRT. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge in such an entertaining way.

I watched this video 3 years ago, but needed a refresher. I just got the results of my DEXA from last week and the impression says "normal bone mineral density." According to your chart, I have osteopenia in my right and left hip; -1.0 and -0.7. Nothing said about osteopenia in the report. Good news is I added bone density in the L-spine, T score is now +2.0 and the right hip BMD increased slightly to -0.7, but still osteopenic. I thought it was impossible to gain bone especially at my age, almost 70. I don't understand why my spine would be in the plus but hips in the minus. I messaged my doctor to interpret results for me, we'll see. Thanks to your very excellent education, I probably know more than she does. Thanks Dr. Taylor for all you do for us!

@@judys1340 I started taking creatine monohydrate 5 gm a day mixed with 250 mg of magnesium glycinate every day for over a year now, plus a supplement called MK-7 which has 100 mcg of vitamin D3 and 100 mcg of vit K2 daily. I've been taking HRT since menopause age 56, started out at 0.025 estradiol patch, few years ago upped it to 0.0375 mg, plus 200 mg of Prometrium. My last DEXA was about 5 years ago, so the only new thing I started since then was the creatine and the MK-7 supplement. Estrogen definitely helps prevent bone loss, not sure it can increase it. I can't say with certainty the creatine and MK-7 helped, but it's the only thing I've changed since the last DEXA 5 years ago.

It's like we are being lied to about all of these standardized tests.

  • @cindylutz7442

I'm a "well nourished" muscular, fit (except that this it's been harder because I've hurt my back badly enough several times this last year that the best I could do was walk like an 80 year old, but I did keep walking, got a bike when it became clear I wouldn't be running, and started weight training while it still hurt because it was clear it was likely never going to not hurt on some level again,) 61 year old. I hurt my back during a small group training class in spring 2019. It healed, but I was afraid of hurting it again--back pain had never been my issue, hips, yes, since college, but not my back--so when I started slipping on black ice that winter, I put my hand out, and bam, broke my first bone, nice compression fracture of the wrist (plus the little tip, that bump, just totally separated.) Apparently they determined I had osteopenia in my wrist, which I thought was normal for my age, so I didn't worry about osteoporosis, except to keep doing the weight bearing activity, etc. Now, I hear if you broke a bone from a low height fall, and this definitely was that, it's a pretty good sign that osteoporosis is...? At least, if you have other risk factors, like relatively early menopause (age 47) that coincided with a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, so now I've been on thyroid for 15 years, and...sometimes. maybe it was too much, at least, I'm pretty sure it caused my PVCs, but no one suggested taking thyroid put me at higher risk.
Now, after thinking about it, I had to wonder, does stress contribute to osteoporosis? I actually live a pretty low stress life because I can't do higher stress--it shows up in my body, I literally break down. But I also had a high stress childhood, and it's my understanding that chronic issues later are being tied to being immersed in "fight or flight" hormones as a kid. My brother actually ferreted this tidbit out when he discovered he had one artery 95% blocked and another 50% as an extremely fit 49 year old. My other brother was diagnosed with a weird form of epilepsy in his 50s--really what it seems to be is mini strokes or...just a blackout--and an auto-immune clotting disorder. I have the auto-immune thyroid condition, plus now an arrhythmia that could eventually weaken my heart, and now a rip roaring case of fairly advanced osteoporosis. (I walked like an 80 year old because that's how old my bones are?)
But no one suggested I should get a bone scan. It was my husband who asked for it after he discovered HE had fractured two vertebrae attempting to get out of the water on a slalom ski--a shock to him, too, because he's an expert skier and has lifted weights, walked consistently since high school. Yet even though he fractured two vertebrae from "water pressure" his doctor didn't suggest a scan, or osteoporosis.
I get that doctors are human and I'd like to believe part of the reason they failed to consider this possibility was that we were young-ish. My husband actually is thin, and has smaller bones for a guy. I've always struggled to stay at the top of the healthy BMI range--and now that I've lost height (5/8" in the last 8 months,) I'm officially overweight. I hoped one benefit might be better bones. But my husband's lumbar measurement was -2.9, not great, while mine is -4.6. My hips were -3.3 and -3.5. No wonder I'm in pain (though supposedly osteoporosis doesn't hurt.) No wonder all it took to sideline me for 6 weeks was a successful backhand return in pickleball (first attempt to play with my 82 year old mom and her similarly aged friends.) Or that even as easy, slow run is now apparently too much jostling for me, and even a side leg raise might cause "something" to "chunk" in my lower back. (Smaller bones move about easier?)
Yes, get checked--get checked earlier than your insurance company thinks you need to be checked. Especially if you've got risk factors. Maybe it wouldn't have madea difference for me. I hope treatment can make a difference now, but I won't lie, not excited about the prospect.

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  Месяц назад

      You are not correct.
A DEXA scan measures bone density. That means it assesses how much bone you have. It has absolutely nothing to do with how strong your bone is. In other words, it measures bone QUANTITY, not bone QUALITY.
The score for measuring bone quantity is the T-score. The T-score compares your current bone density to that of a 30-year-old woman. The bone density of a 30-year-old woman is the standard of comparison because your bone density is its absolute highest at age 30.
So, a DEXA scan says, “Let’s see how you compare to the very best.”
Any positive T-score is normal. 30-year-old women have T-scores in the positive range. So, anything above 0 is great.
Any negative T-score is abnormal. It means your bone density is not as good as that of a 30-year-old woman.
A negative T-score between -0.1 - -2.4 is “osteopenia.” Osteopenia means that you have less bone than is optimal, but not enough to constitute full-blown osteoporosis. But, it means that you are headed to osteoporosis land.
A negative T-score of -2.5 or lower indicates osteoporosis. At this point, you are at extremely high risk of fracture.

For e.g., if the risk of fracture for a 30yo is 0 then 2X that is still 0. Also, you said use the lowest score as the overall score. Do you mean for treatment? Suppose the neck is -1.7 but hip and spine are only -.6. Does this mean a person is more likely to break her neck than her hip?

      Alice,
This is precisely the kind of thing for which I do one-on-one consultations. You definitely need one. No two women are alike, and addressing your situation requires tailoring all the facts specifically to YOU.
I'm in the business of educating you about everything you need to know and do in order to get exactly what you want for managing your menopause your way. So, here's how a consultation works:

Why should we expect a 60 year old to have the bones of a 30 year old? We don’t have the skin, muscles or organs of a 30 year old.

Why should you compare yourself to anything but the best?
Most 60 year-old women have lost their estrogen and are losing bone like crazy. The they have a spine or hip fracture that cripples them for the rest of their lives. That's why 90% of nursing home residents are women who have fractured.

    Dr Taylor..
Hello. I was referred to you by Dominique Sachse. I have a question that I hope you can answer.. I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. They put me on tamoxifen. Which is an estrogen blocker. I’m having terrible side effects that threw me into early menopause symptoms. Night sweats heat hot flashes. Hormone replacement is not an option for me because of the medication that is a hormone blocker. Is there anything else that you can suggest that I can do?

      Maureen,
This is something that warrants a consultation.
It's precisely the kind of thing for which I do one-on-one consultations. You definitely need one. No two women are alike, and addressing your situation requires tailoring all the facts specifically to YOU.
I'm in the business of educating you about everything you need to know and do in order to get exactly what you want for managing your menopause your way. So, here's how a consultation works:

I don't know what you mean by "waffle."
Sorry if you don't like my waffling style.
If you’d like a more efficient delivery of this menopause education, you should do one of the following:
      • Read my book
      • Watch the webinars in order
      • Watch the DVD entitled Your Menopause Your Way
They all give you the complete education without the fluff of the videos. You can get any of these from my website, MenopauseTaylor.ME.
And if you want the fastest track, schedule a consultation with me, and you'll get the education along with tailoring of it specifically to YOU. You can schedule a consultation at MenopauseTaylor.ME.
These videos cover only one piece of information in each video. That’s intentional. If you only use these videos to get your education, it will be very complete, but it will take a looooooong time. My goal is to meet the needs of all women, regardless of their learning style, and regardless of their command of the English language. Many of my viewers speak English as a second, third, or fourth language. You may not care about them, but I do.
I am the only person providing a complete and unbiased education on menopause. So, I’m trying to serve the needs of all women. I’m sorry I haven’t served yours well. But I think one of the other options listed above will.

If you'd like a more efficient delivery of this education, consider doing one of the following:
      1) Schedule a consultation with me at MenopauseTaylor.ME. I'll give you the overall education AND tailor it to your personal situation.
      2) Get the set of 15 webinars and watch them in order. It's my 2-day, 14-hour seminar.
      3) Get the 2 DVDs and watch them in order.
      4) Get my book and read it cover-to-cover.
I am the only person on Planet Earth delivering an actual education to women on menopause. Everything else is advertising or promoting of one management style over all others. I teach you about all your options in all categories, along with all the pros and cons of each.
Many of my viewers speak English as a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th language. My goal is to educate in a way that accommodates all learning styles. So these videos are intentionally slow and playful to make learning fun.
I'm sorry if I have not met your needs. These are my everyday clothes. I'm not in costume.
