A lot of people have asked me about a good Cloudlifter and Shure SM7B bundle. As it turns out Sweetwater has a great bundle. Here's a link to it! bit.ly/CloudlifterandSM7BBundle
Excellent job summarizing the main idea in the first 2 minutes. There are dozens of these videos but that kept me watching the rest of your video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks you sir Very much. I have seen so many videos on this but this is best and most direct. My set up now works. I am using the shure sm7b with a cloudlifter to zoom H6. I couldn't get the MIC to work on any four channels channels on the H6, but when I turned the phantom power on ! BOOM ! It worked. I didn't earlier because the shure sm7b being dynamic mic does not require phantom power they say but turns out if you're using the cloud lifter, you have to turn on phantom power. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!
what if I'm using the 8i6 Scarlett, would I need one since the 8i6 takes its power from a wall plug and not through the computer via usb? ( I'm also using the Shure SM7B)
Good question! I don’t believe the microphone preamp specs change. If you have a gen 3 Scarlett you can drive an SM7b or f you turn up the gain to 100%, but it doesn’t sound all that great to me.
Hello, thank you for the amazing review! This video inspired me to invest in this exact setup, so thank you for the recommendation. Finally got everything setup today, however I’ve ran into a bit of an issue. When I play back my audio with this setup, I seem to get a electrical whine in my sound. However when I plug my microphone directly into my scarlet without the presence of the cloudlifter, I no longer have this issue. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?
Hey Steven! The Cloudlifter is an input device so it wouldn’t help the output in this case. If I had to take a quick guess I imagine the input gain on the camera is set too high. Try lowering that and raising the x32 output.
Here I am with budget mic, budget interface, trying to get my mic to act properly.. you have any videos with lower end items using the CL-1? I have a weak Behringer X802USB with an AKG P220 mic. I am almost sold but.. I am afraid that buying this for my setup wouldn't change much and it would be a waste of time and money.
Great review! on your testing are you completely deactivating the +48V pre-amp (ie. OFF) on the FocusRite OR are you simply turning it way down to compensate for the additional boost?
Hey Joseph, thanks for the comment! I did just adjust the gain level down on the interface after activating the Cloudlifter to show how we could reduce gain on the primary interface and still be louder overall with lower noise/distortion.
Hey Cage, how are you? I'm currently using a M-Audio 192/4 and considering buying a sm7b, do you think i should get a Cloudfilter CL1 aswell? Thank you!! Great video
I can’t figure out how to stop the noise (hissing sound) with my SM7. I bought the cloudlifter and it’s still doing it.. should consider another interface? I currently have the focusrite
Good question! I think the Scarlett can have some noise if the gain is set too high. Are you keeping it pretty low on the interface itself and letting the Cloudlifter give you the bulk of the gain? Other quick things to check would be replacing mic cables and checking for potential power issues.
Dang Ryan! Flexing with that ribbon mic! lol. As far as bus powered usb interfaces, I have a EVO 8, which is bus powered through USB C. Does the USB type matter? Also, for the ribbon mic, you used your apollo interface which I believe has a power supply. Yet there was a perceptible gain boost with the cloudlifter. Since I have something similar with the iD44, which also has its own power supply, is a cloud lifter really necessary? I seems to me that with an interface that has it's own power supply, we can just boost the gain from the interface with no problems.
Yeah yeah yeah! Interfaces that have an external power supply are more likely to have enough gain, but even then it can still be good to have a Cloudlifter. For instance, even the Apollo is on the fringes of having enough gain on its own so if you can balance between the Cloudlifter and main interface I think you can find a sweet spot in the sound/noise.
I have a neat worker bee... do I need something like a cloudlifter ? I have it plugged into my zoom h4n pro. Sojnds good but I have to turn up the input levels to around 70...
Hey A1Bokeh! No need for a CloudLifter on the worker bee because it's a Condenser microphone. The Cloudlifter is really for dynamic microphones or for passive Ribbon microphones.
That's kinda hard to say, because he said it does add color, and the neutrality of the mice and line-in would be altered. Thus, the emulation would be off. If you wanted to use it, I think you'll have to run a line-out to the cloud lifter, and then another line-in, if that makes sense.
What is the equivalent product for guitars? I feel like this might be an issue with guitars too. It's suggested to increase the gain to the point that the audio interface doesn't clip. However, when you do so, you raise the noise floor too and it's clearly audible as hizzing, noise, static sound. So, what can be done in this case?
Hey Dennis, thanks for watching! There sort of is a way to do this. If you look for a guitar preamp you can do something similar, or an Active DI with a gain circuit would also do something similar. You could also get a 500 series product and use a DI on that to go into the interface.
@@TheGearCage Hi, thanks for the reply. So, this is why some people use stuff like the Lehle Sunday Driver in front of the audio interface. I just googled it again and it seems to be a preamp. I will research more about this! Thank you!
Been using the sm7b with the CL1 and the focusrite scarlett solo (2nd gen), I now have no sound from the mic. Cables have been changed/checked (OK). Any other troubleshooting thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Roadcaster pro = 55 db gain, cloudlifter CL-1 = 25 DB can I add another cloudlifter for an extra 25 db with the same signal chain going to the sm7b ? Someone please respond
@@TheGearCage do you know of a way I can connect another DAW to the roadcaster with an additional cloudlifter just in case I needed more gain on the sm7b
Hey i just got a SM7B to use with a cloudlifter into my Apollo Twin USB. I bought the mic in order to record vocals and mostly for pop music (which means a lot of compression:). Here's the issue... the noise floor is insanely high and despite preamp level there's always a high white noise type sound in the recordings. I've tried without the cloudlifter, different xlr cables, with the monitors and lights turned off, different preamps / with uads clean preamp, different mic and cable positions around the room… but no matter what i try the noise is still there. It wouldn't have been an issue if the noise did not compete with the vocals in the mix… i’m using a gate to mitigate it but of course it’s not a proper solution. I’m really desperate here guys and would love if any of you could help me out! Thanks! *I’v been recording a lot with a neumann tlm 102 without any issues so the preamp in the apollo itself and cabels should be fine*
it could be your computer generating an electrical noise. try with a different pc or a laptop not plugged in and plugged in. I had a desktop pc that added electrical noise to my 2i4 and I noticed my old laptop used to do that sometimes when the charger was connected and sometimes when the charger wasn't. I changed the pc and it doesnt do that. so maybe try a different pc. ****[just saying]
I own a Sony a7iii, a zoom h6, sennheiser mke 600 shotgun mic. Would a cloudlifter help me get more gain w less a noise floor? I feel like around 7 on the gain from the zoom is where is starts to get noisy. I was hoping this would help. Thank you
We’ll that is a good point. The cloudlifter won’t pass phantom power. That’s not always a dealbreaker though. For instance, the Rode NTG4+ is battery powered so you could use a Cloudlifter to boost gain. Otherwise you’d have to have a phantom power box post Cloudlifter which is another workaround.
It still doesn't make any sense why the XLR audio interface manufacturers can't integrate a signal booster stage inside their equipment. The Cloudlifter needs to be powered anyway by the audio interface, and that power consumption comes from the usb port in the computer. There is just no excuse to have to buy an extra power stage to add to another power stage.
Instead of paying for an audio interface with garbage preamp and paying extra for dedicated preamp that also cannibalizes on 48v phantom power, it is wiser to pay for an interface with quality preamp.
I think you can hear a little bit of noise if you have the volume turned completely up in RUclips. At normal volumes it shouldn't be that recognizable. Interestingly enough, I can hear a little bit of noise on my 16" MacBook Pro speakers, but nothing really through my studio monitors/headphones/or LG widescreen speakers when completely turned up. It might have something to do with the optimization/DSP in the laptop speakers. So many variables when it comes back to audio playback these days.

There's no difference. When you boost the audio by the same amount from any source it has the same effect.
