I love the Ramones! I'm surprised to see Johnny playing with a capo though! This song consists of four chords total: three major chords and one minor chord. Why didn't he just play the I / IV / V progression with E A and B (and C#, the vi)?
becuz it is a completely different sound when you play with open strings as opposed to barred chords. and the production of the song calls for big open chords, and the guitar is probably not his (only time i've ever seen Johnny use a strat) and tuned lower than E standard, hence the capo.
In the Ramones biography written in the 90’s Johnny said he used a white strat for recording this song and used a capo because he wanted a “chimey, tinny” sound. Kind of bell-like I’d imagine.
