Burrowing Owls.....love those little owls. If you ever make it down to the Ft Myers, Fl area (Cape Coral specifically)....there are numerous Burrowing Owl photo opportunities down here. In fact, they even hold an annual Burrowing Owl Festival every Feb.
Love those burrowing owls! I'm headed down to the desert southwest on a 10 day road trip in April. I'm hoping to find some great wildlife!! Thanks for the inspiration!
Who watched whom? 😉🦉Beautiful pictures, light, composition and colors. 👏👏👏1/60 sec with such a long zoom, wow, what a steady hand. Congratulations Steve! 👍
Burrowing Owls are my favourite owls! Beautiful shots - all of them. I love the pink background and the one with its back to the camera looking out. Gosh, imagine having the possible chance of too many owl shots! So glad you stayed. Absolutely beautiful. You made my day. 🥰😍👍🥰😎🦉🦉🦉🦉😍😍😍
I just made a video about the burrowing owls that I found in southern Phoenix. There are about 22 pairs that I found last year - it's amazing if you can get to them just after they have their young - amazing birds! Great video!
Nice video Steve. Once again, it seems that a lot of American wildlife is remarkably tolerant of human activity. I'm not a gear freak but you have some kit that I greatly envy......namely a pair of knees that actually work! Old age sucks. P.s. Loved the full frame portrait view with the purple background.
Yoga is too late for me Steve. 60 years of hiking, running and physical work has resulted in one replacement knee and the other threatening to go the same way. I still get out and about though........just have to tread more carefully🙂. When photographing, getting down to low level can be achieved but it can be embarrassingly dodgy getting back up....😬😬😬😬😬
"So... I was just driving down the road..." 🤣 Steve - I don't know if I will ever be able to drive down the road the same since watching your channel. I hope I can stay on it!
Burrowing Owls are adorable and fun to watch. We have fields here in Arizona where I will watch them for hours! I love the blur effect and will try that next time. Thank you 😊
Great shots, especially the ones with the owl with the sunset sky. It was amazing that the owl stayed in the same spot for so long - he/she must have liked you...
Looks like you had a good day out. These guys are so fun to watch and the images came out great at sunset. Hoping to shoot them someday and add to my list.
Another fabulous vlog Steve! Put a huge smile on my face when you mentioned Salton Sea as I'm very near there! I have a hard enough time keeping my eyes on the road as it is.... now I'll be looking for Burrowing Owls. Keep up the excellent work!
OK, so you spent an afternoon in sunny warm CA. I also spent a sunny day outdoors but mine was at 10F with snow to my knees in Glacier National Park. Got some decent iconic images of Lake McDonald but not a trace of color or cloud in the sky. And not a critter to be seen, except of the human variety. I hope you are enjoying all my good luck I sent your way.
I love when that happens. Besides that you’re amazing, those are some great images. The one with its back facing you was really interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Another fun video, wishing I was some place warm. Love Burrowing owls, they are fun to photograph out at Antelope island during the warm summer into fall months. It's funny I talk about being warm ,but then I'm planning another Teton trip next month to snowshoe some more there. I'm sure Jackson Lake is quite frozen right now.
Nice one Steve! The purple background lighting at the end was very nice! Also really liked the slow-mo video, Z6 coming in clutch! Would love to photograph these dudes one day, All the best, Tom
Haha, you mean you couldn't tell? I chose the Z7 because it makes an excellent landscape camera too with the high resolution sensor and the 24-70 f4 lens.
@@SteveMattheis For myself the better video performance of the Z6 was my major draw, for landscapes my D850 will more than suffice and TBH 24MP of the Z6 when used for landscapes will be pretty darn good and the lightweight nature will be lovely!
Patience pays off. That evening background light made these images spectacular compared to the average shot. Bet your glad to get out of the record snow in Jackson for awhile. Safe journey home.
I havent been able to find a burrowing owl out here yet, but still working on it. Love that I stumbled on your videos! Super impressed now I have some ideas for my next vlog :D Look forward to more content
Great video Steve! You must be the owl wizard. No matter where you go you get incredible shots. I live in central NY and have yet to photograph an owl. I could go to the zoo but then there’s no challenge. Thank you, Tom
Great video. I'm not too far, San Diego. This inspires me to head out to the Salton Sea and track down these little guys. Hope you stopped for a date shake, local favorite.
Welcome back to SoCal Steve. The toughest decision is figuring out which T-shirts and shorts to pack for our winters. Nice images. Gonna have to make the drive to the desert and see if I can "stumble" onto some owls.
Great photos! Been trying to find some burrowing owls myself up here a little more north of you at the moment. Love your videos and look forward to the next!
Great job! This reminds me of my adventure down into the south florida, looking for burrowing owls! Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate as it did for you, but I did see a couple burrowing owls! I just told myself, there were two great things about photography, nice photos+unforgettable adventures, at least I could leave with one of them, haha!
Steve, you must have owl vision to see those birds in that environment, they are so well camouflaged. Great shots, really like the third one in your slideshow. Oh, was that Palm Springs airport? Looked like it....thanks
I had been there about 5 years ago and found some so I knew they were there. You can also check ebird range maps to see where other people have seen them. It's pretty handy...
Really nice images. That view with the blurry foreground is very popular with Morten Hillmer. I presume you know the daily schedule of the types of owls you photograph. Aren’t most owls nocturnal? Wouldn’t the game be then to get the biggest lens you can get, set the ISO to the highest you can get away with, and wait for the owl to hunt?
Hi Steve, just AMAZING. you delivered another great video keep up the good work. I've been following you since the beginning of your channel and you have inspired ever since to go out more and take pictures. Got 1 question though I see that you are using the new Nikon Z camera ?? is this a permanent add-on to your bag and what are your thoughts ?? as I am thinking of adding one myself. I currently own a Nikon D500 and Nikon D850. would love to hear your thoughts....
Cool thanks for watching👍👍. The Z7 is a permanent addition. It's pretty good but needs some firmware updates to address AF issues and a few other problems. Hopefully Nikon changes their ways and behaves more like Fuji in that regard...
Still waiting for my 500mm PF😣 Australia have nothing No ETA on the lens.Seeing you holding low on the ground make me think I can't do that with 600mmF4.Always beautiful videos you make.👍👍
What, you didn't driiiiiiive to So Cal?? It's only a few inches on the map!! ;) Nice shots. Considering their natural environment is in that harsh sunshine I don't really find it a detriment from a documentary photo standpoint. Shows them in situ. The sunset ones are great though. Well done.
I would love a video on how you deal with 'bad light' that you are speaking about ca mins in. Obviously more in a situation where you are after something very specific and elusive and just going elsewhere isn't that reliable. Thaaaaaaanks :)
Great video. Reminds me of the only time I saw Burrowing Owls on a trip to the US, in the Columbia Basin. Looking forward to what else you'll get on that trip ... :-) BTW, did you switch cameras? Looks like it ... :-)
Still using the D850 as my primary camera but added a Z7 which is great for everything except AF tracking. And I can shoot video with it much better than the D850...
Burrowing Owls.....love those little owls. If you ever make it down to the Ft Myers, Fl area (Cape Coral specifically)....there are numerous Burrowing Owl photo opportunities down here. In fact, they even hold an annual Burrowing Owl Festival every Feb.
Hmmm I love a good festival👍👍
I had to re-watch this since I went out to this spot 2 days ago... I was fortunate to see at least a couple hundred in my 4.5 hours out there.
Used to farm in the Central Valley and always enjoyed watching those quirky owls
They are pretty cool👍
Really perfect Steve... The narrative and the fiction is great.
Thanks👍
So cool to see the different pupil dilations at 15:27 between the eye thats facing the sun and the one that's not
Way cool👍
Gotta love burrowing owls. Good stuff Steve!
Another great video Steve! Your creativity with your images is a real inspiration for my own photography. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks👍👍
at 12:37 I could already tell it was going to be a classic Salton Sea sunset.
I’m glad the burrowing owls cooperated... my luck would be to travel that far and find nothing but ravens.
Ravens can be great subjects too😬
Love those burrowing owls! I'm headed down to the desert southwest on a 10 day road trip in April. I'm hoping to find some great wildlife!! Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Steve. over here in Uk they are called 'Little Owls' and they do burrow underground mainly found pearhed up in hedge rows and on telephone lines
That’s not correct John. Little Owl and Burrowing Owls are a different species totally.
Great shots, especially the ones with the owl with the sunset sky. It was amazing that the owl stayed in the same spot for so long - he/she must have liked you...

Great shots Steve and great tidbits for the situation you were in. Thanks for sharin!

Great video, it's fantastic when everything comes together.
I love me some burrowing owls

Great to see you got some shots and even better some quality time watching burrowing owls. Near the top of my list of owls that I haven't yet shot.
Thanks👍

Nice to see you busting out the z7 and giving us a taste of what it can do! looks like the hearing aid is still gone! nice...
I can still hear👍👍
One these days I might do one of your workshops.
👍👍
I've never even seen one owl in my 53 years of life and you see 6 in one day?!?!?! Great pics as always Steve!
