    Hello, my name is Barry and I wanted to show you my new “Extendable Tai Chi Sword” that I got on Amazon. It weighs 1.6 pounds and is made of stainless steel. It is 12” collapsed and a little over 38” extended. I found that if you hold the cap and push the handle into the cap, it closes the sword much easier than trying to push the cap down on the blade as I did in the video. You can find it on Amazon - it is called the ICNBYS Chinese Extendable Tai Chi Sword:

      Good for you. You'll like it. The movie? I can't remember the name, but it was about some guys who had to fight trough a gauntlet in the Shaolin temple before they could ask a question (they wanted to find some bad guys they thought were hiding in the temple I think). If I remember the name I'll let you know, but that's all I can remember now. It was a Shaw Brothers film and one of the main actors, the one who used the sword, looks like John Oates of the singing group Hall and Oats. At least he looks like him to me (same hair haha).

    You're supposed to be able to just retract it by hand right? I have that same sword, but It's hard as hell to retract to the point where I have to put in a ridiculous amount of strength. That's not normal right? Or is there just some kind of mechanism I'm not aware of?

    • @BarryHarrellYouTube
      @BarryHarrellYouTube  3 года назад

      Yea, I mentioned that in the video too, I have the same problem from time to time. I had to oil it with some dry lubricant spray like a silicone spray to break it loose and get it to move well. But yea, it does do that and it's a big pain when it happens. Once you spray it and get it working, try not to extend it with too much force. It will stay extended, but it's hard to resist the temptation not to sling it out there really hard.

    If you stab something, wouldn’t the sword go back in?

    • @BarryHarrellYouTube
      @BarryHarrellYouTube  4 года назад +1

      Na, it is too hard to put back in so I doubt it would close up (see the part of the video where I mention that at 51 seconds). If you hit it just right it might close some, but it is so hard I doubt it would. I would aim for the face with it as you could not hurt them with it hitting them in the body, not much anyway unless maybe it's the ribs. Getting hit by the side of it will crack a bone, just think of it as a thin, lightweight, hard, fast club and not a sword. Thanks.

    Is it easy to brake and can it hurt someone?

    • @BarryHarrellYouTube
      @BarryHarrellYouTube  5 лет назад +3

      No, it is very hard. If you hit someone it will hurt them. If you hit a wall or a tree as hard as you can, it will damage the weapon. But it is stainless steel and much more solid that one might think.

  • @chmonya_cat1
    @chmonya_cat1 Месяц назад +1

    Is it durable? Won't it break if you hit a rock?

    • @BarryHarrellYouTube
      @BarryHarrellYouTube  Месяц назад

      Yes, it's very durable. As for the second part of your question, it all depends on how big the rock is and how hard you hit it. This is not a cheap junky sword. It is stainless steel, heavy, and well made. I mess around form time to time and hit bushes and limbs as well as really big palm trees with it. But here is the thing you need to know: it could break an arm or a hand if you hit someone with it. If you plan on hitting rocks or tress expect it to bend a little and then the individual parts of the sword will be very difficult to collapse or open. But if you don't abuse it, it will last a long time and give you countless hours of enjoyment.
      I have owned my sword for seven years and though I haven't used it very much in the last few years, it still looks new and works like it did in the video. Just remember to keep it clean and do not abuse it. And put a small amount of oil on it from time to time. Note that I have had days were I couldn't collapse the blade after hitting tress too hard. So treat it well and use it as it was intended to be used and it will last you a very long time. Mine looks as good today as when I first bought it.
      Thanks,
      Barry

    Greetings, nice review.
    I planning to buy this sword, however i still have doubts, so i still need some questions be answered. Is it truly worthy as a self defense tool? Is it massive enough to be used as a defensive weapon, durable enough to being used for long term?
    Thank you for reading

    • @BarryHarrellYouTube
      @BarryHarrellYouTube  4 года назад +2

      Yes and Yes. It is kind of heavy and solid. I would hate to get hit by it. No it is not sharp and cannot be sharpened, but it is stainless steel and heavy enough to do damage but be moved quickly. It is like a thin metal pole with an edge on it (almost an edge anyway). It will not cut you, but it will crack your skull. And it is longer than a collapsible baton. But you know how things are, some people will love it while others will think it's not any good. But if it hit them, their minds would change as soon as the woke up. :)

      It is completely not sharp at the tip. The sides are a bit sharp at high speeds. Works best as a warning bat, or just for training. If you already trained in Jian or even Rapier, you can have a pretty good time. If not, learn.

    • @harrellNOAA
      @harrellNOAA 5 лет назад

      Do you often get into fights with trees? haha It is a practice weapon - so it is usable for its intended purpose. The weight, balance, and size are all similar to the real thing, All that said, I would not want to get hit by it full strength - it is stainless steel. It would be like getting hit with a pipe.

    • @NorwegianAngel
      @NorwegianAngel 5 лет назад

      But is it solid like a pipe...? I mentioned trees to see the strength in this. :) And yes, I fight a lot of trees, just to see the strength and durability in my weapons. The best part is that the trees dont hit back.. ;) Training is more then controll or swinging it fancy around. You should also be able to hold on to Your weapons when they hit an Object as well.

    • @BarryHarrellYouTube
      @BarryHarrellYouTube  5 лет назад

      Alex, I don't get your point man. I have more real weapons that you might think; ones that I use to cut with as well - including (at one time one of the top competition cutting swords) a Last Legend Tsunami katana. So I get it, you want something real. But man, this is a practice weapon; and training is more than hitting things that don't hit back too. ;-) But if someone wants a cool sword to try all of the cool moves with, but are affair to try, then this is a good one to do that with. It feels great, very similar to my real jian so it is useful. Hitting something that does not move is useful too, like a punching bag, but it does not have to be "real" when you are cutting air or sparring, just close. I have been in martial arts for 50 years as of last month, and I used to use a 20 pound metal bar as a bo. My Sensei told me that if I can't do it with that, then I am too weak. I agree - but who wants to fight with a bar that big and heavy? It makes you slow, until you pick up a regular oak bo. Then you are fast and strong. So I am saying that both hitting the tree, and sparring, and hitting targets and on and on are all good. BTW - just for fun, look at my RUclips video "Martial Art Weapons" I posted (old video from the 80;s) of me using different weapons (the sai's in the video are very heavy and sharp). Also, look at my "Blackbelt 1992 movie clip" - you can see me working out with Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, and Don "The Dragon Wilson" a million years ago. I really have been around that long and I really do appreciate all kinds of training (except a few I won't mention). But my point is, there is good in a lot of different things. And yes, I agree, I like to hit trees too. One last thing, I did take that extendable sword out and I cut palm fronds from a palm tree by the pool. The weapon is very stiff and very hard. It reminds me of a telescoping baton with a bit of an edge since it is tapered; it is a lot harder than it appears. Thanks for the comments Sir. I respect your opinion and your commitment to training the hard way. Barry

    • @NorwegianAngel
      @NorwegianAngel 5 лет назад

      Then you don't understand my question. I can see similar questions in the comments but they have not been answered.

    • @BarryHarrellYouTube
      @BarryHarrellYouTube  5 лет назад +1

      Yea, I stopped answering questions a while back because I have had some bad health problems and just had my third major surgery in the last two years. But I am starting to feel better and thought you were just kidding around and decided to answer you. "Is it useful", yes it is. I mean, it is not sharp and if I hit a tree as hard as I can I would damage the sword. But if I hit someone on the arm or on their head as hard as I could, I would damage them and not the weapon. So in a real life situation, as a club, yes it is usable. As a sword, then no.
      But since the intent of the sword is to practice movements, then yes it is usable. All that said, I got to play around with - I thought it was cool and it was dirt cheap. It turned out to be much better than I thought it would be.

  • @hendrikkooistra1
    @hendrikkooistra1 3 года назад

    Its not a sword, its just a prop. Trying to cut something with this prop will break it.

    • @barryharrell3355
      @barryharrell3355 3 года назад

      Thank you for your comment, but I disagree with you, this is not a prop. Please don't get this training sword confused with the cheap ones on the market. Have you ever seen a collapsible baton like the police use? This is similar to that, it's very hard and strong. It does not weigh a lot, so it moves very fast and hits very hard since the edge comes to a blunt bevel. The edge is not sharp, but who cares? It's hard and that is what matters. Think about it this way, the great swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi, killed over 60 men in sword fights using bokken (a wooden training sword - lightweight blunt wood). He said he did that because swords broke too easily. So think of this as a steel training sword. Crack someone on the forearm, or the back of the hand with this weapon and they are done using that arm for a while. Crack them on the head, and they are done using their head for a while. Sir, believe me when I tell you this - I am Rokudan (6th degree black belt) and have other black belts in Chinese and Korean arts (I grew up in Hawaii where it was taught everywhere). I have trained with both Japanese and Chinese weapons for close to 50 years and taught Kendo too. Also, I wrote an article for Official Karate Magazine about the history of Kendo called "Kendo: Ghost of Bushi". I am telling you, and any who reads this, that I do have some experience with weapons and using them against an opponent. So please believe me what I tell you that this training sword can be used as a weapon and a very effective one at that. Thanks again for the comment, comments like these help people to understand more about this training sword. It really is a lot better than the others out there.
