After a few years playing with an Ensoniq keyboard (early 90's) I was spoiled/indulged/impressed. I think there was some patent rubbish that took that cleverness away for a few decades. @@peterkadarmusic9728 That's a fair point. Also good to hear from another person still using an SQ-80 :-) (although I only use mine a polyphonic aftertouch controller).
Not heard of the patent issues. I think the real issue is most synth makers never design a keybed, it is too costly and so they go to Fatar and if they don't offer a poly AT keybed then you don't get one. The only think worse than going to Fatar is not going to Fatar and going cheaper still, DSI did that with the Pro 2 and Prophet 12 and it's a very flimsy keybed that breaks in shipping. As for the Ensoniq keybed, it did poly AT by using metal plates and PCB traces shaped like coils. When you pressed down harder it moved the metal closer to the PCB. But that keybed design tends to get "klacky" over time when the foam pads on the plates deteriorates. Creative have the IP of Ensoniq and EMU and has no competing products in the market.

Mainly if you have an issue with the hydras sonic range and sound character. Summit is the more traditional spread and hits hard in the more usual sense. Deluxe is the equivalent of the old 8+8 setup in a full size board with more up to date QOL features. It’s certainly not a summit but vice versa the same.

Someone who plays a synth with emotion! Sadly most "demos" are just useless patch playing without sense. The "Piano RA" patch sounds like a piano that morphs into a harp.
Re 'the Shelf' - alright I get the purpose, but really, its such a nice looking keyboard, why would you clutter it up with some other box sitting on top of it? I plan on getting a Hydrasynth Deluxe in January, and I probably won't use the shelf. Its a shame they didn't make fuller use of that extra space for new features - but as Nick says, the price would have gone up. As it is, AUD$2999 is affordable, and I'm sure I'm going to love this synth.
FWIW, the LFOs are easy to configure as a step sequencer. There’s a how-to video on their channel, but I agree that a synth this nice cries out for a dedicated sequencer.
I thought the *original* was amazing. 😮 This has me drooling heavily. At first, I was like “ohh, *sigh* -they pulled a Digitone Keys maneuver,” (still love you, Elektron!), but the shelf is a *great* idea, especially with the rubber padding. Hey, don’t be sad Elektron - ! - I’ll park my Digitakt there! 😀👍
Always fun to see Mr. Batt with a new synth. Programmability seems like a aficionados dream - yet it kinda sound like a unimpressive VST. And it’s it really.. Dig the beats though.
It seems this year is really more about companies looking at their back catalog or existing instruments and offering a different size rather than doing anything “new”. Deluxe HydraSynth, Desktop Super 6, and even the Take 5 to an extent.

Yamaha lol. Now there is a dead brand in this area if ever there was one. The whole CP/YC debacle is a laughing stock.
Good to see Dom and Glen getting good response on the larger board however. It and the explorer should easily outperform the now nigh-worthless 49 key size unit.
I reeeeally want one, but my budget planning says "noooo!". :(
Sounds beautiful. But a small worry: Now that we’re almost done being obsessed with 70s/80s knobby vintage, I’m not sure I’m ready for the 90s workstation aesthetic to come back into fashion. And least there are lots of controls and no membrane keys…. (yet?)
It looks bad from outside but they really nailed ergonomics imo!
If they bring back the membrane number pad and single data slider encoder I’m out of here.
don't worry. seems analog is here to stay i don't think this will change soon
Wow. Sounds awesome
Deluxe synth that still uses a wallwart ?
Are those graphics to the right of the synth for real?
The strip doesn’t span the whole keyboard? Weiiird. I love my Hydrasynth and can’t imagine having more keys without the ribbon above them for bends and modulation
Nice T-shirt Nick… is there something subliminal going on??
not really... :-)
@@sonicstate Hydrasynth is nice, I still feel they miss a few tricks and still playing catch up with Access Virus. Certainly there is a nod to Access Virus in design of the delux.
Finally! A synthesizer I can put my lunch on! I joke, of course, this beast looks and sounds like a real beauty.
I wish Ashun guys were not so proud of their logo... Great synth though...
Ooooo a new JX 10!
In the manual they call that shelf a "laptop shelf".
put an A4 or OT in the space - setup complete ;-)
This is the way
@@Claidheambmor unfortunately they are both a little wide!
While the massive blank space on the right filled with a logo or iPad is okay, I’d prefer centralised controls (Yes, you too Modal).
More $$$ though - they said that it was a challenge to bring it in at the price as it was......
@@sonicstate but how does it affect price when it’s a design choice with a built in flaw?
Being forced off middle C is like saying it’s fine to play an off-set violin because it’s got a really long bow and diagonal fingerboard.
It’s a crazy lazy excuse IMO
Hi Dara, I think Nick misinterpreted your statement - as did I on first reading. You want the existing controls placed centrally and not offset to the left. First time I read it, I took it to mean you wanted additional "central controls" there, IYSWIM.
Love the synth, but what were they thinking with the huge logo on the front panel. Looks bloody awful.
Duct tape'll take care of that.
Really beautiful synth engine, really horrendous graphic 🤦♂️. Never understand why sound companies don’t care enough about visual design to at least employ the services of people who do. It’s all part of the artistic experience of the instrument. Lovely sounds and interface though.
I wonder if there's a market for wrapping synths like they do with cars?
Here’s an idea…cover it up with something. A vinyl sticker? A book or magazine? A piece of hardware?
This and the summit are my big "dream in the sky" synth combo. I've got drum machines and other smaller synths I can pair with the big ones, but I need the room first. That's what holds my GAS (that and the cost of both :))
Honestly the cost of this is actually an amazing bargain.
Paid about the same in 1983 for a 49 key, single oscillator Sequential Six Trak- No velocity, no after-touch, no sample-based waveforms...😂
I wonder if Vangelis had a Hydrasynth in his last years.
He did. He owned a Hydrasynth (standard ed), and other modern day synths he owned was a Polybrute and a Matrixbrute. He did
Someone who plays a synth with emotion! Sadly most "demos" are just useless patch playing without sense.
The "Piano RA" patch sounds like a piano that morphs into a harp.
Looking forward for Nick reviewing Take 5.
Hmm! That; with my prophet 10? NO other synth NEEDED! 🤨🎹👍🏾
I clicked like just on the opening notes !!!!!!!!!! Beauty.
Bi-timbral .........? 🤪
I want one!
Great and big sound . Hidra Is eccellet
ASM should have included a sequencer. Either way it's a magnificent synth.
I have a Hydrasynth desktop. The 5 LFO's can each do a 64 step "step sequencer".
I want one......😎
It seems this year is really more about companies looking at their back catalog or existing instruments and offering a different size rather than doing anything “new”. Deluxe HydraSynth, Desktop Super 6, and even the Take 5 to an extent.
The desktop Super 6 was released before the keyboard version.
This offers TREMENDOUS advantages over the prior models.
Oh PLEASE Nick, play more and get lost in it!
😍 biggest synth
Wait I herd that sound somewhere else... My synth
Imagine, the lazy cheapskates at Roland, Yamaha and Korg et cetera could have given us polyphonic aftertouch - for the same money - all along!
