US Navy Veteran Confronts Gunman on His Property

- A Georgia homeowner saw a gunman sneaking down his driveway at night. Whitfield Smith, a U.S. Navy veteran, says he spotted the gunman running across his front lawn around 2 a.m. In pajamas and flip-flops, Smith fired a warning shot which erupted into a shootout between the intruders and homeowner, causing bullets to shatter Smith's car windows. A few minutes later, he emerged from his house fully dressed, wearing sneakers and armed with a bigger rifle. That's when the prowlers fled the scene.
He got dressed and grabbed a bigger gun…this guy is awesome.

No worries. Warning shots like that have to much air resistance. It actually causes barely any fast speed to be reached. Air resistance is really mean to bullets.

Guy might have been running at him while shooting, you want to use the next corner against your aggressor
He spot the thief taking cover from the gun blazing, and the vet take the chance and walk back to prepare.
Based from video, ill assume the vet only approach with intention to talk it out with the thief and that explain the warning shot.
Little did he know, the thief went defensive because the shock of warning shot, thus start the gun blazing on both party.
And based from that, the vet backing off just like i said before, then be prepared for second approach.
Then why wont he prepared first you might ask?, Well he already spot someone coming with fire arm and bad intention, and i assume he on comfort state on his house that night and didn't expect something like that to happened. So if he didn't straight to do that encounter, his car might stolen or perhaps worse scenario one of family member encounter the danger first, i meant the chance not 0 so. And thus the vet decided to do the encounter immediately.
Cars actually suck as cover. The only thing that you can actually hide behind is the engine block, otherwise it’s zero cover.

Every gun owner is literally taught to never fire a warning shot when it comes to self defense. I'd be surprised if he doesn't eventually get in some kind of trouble for that

Realistically you call the police first that way in case something happens to you help is already on the way. Don't go outside in the dark either by yourself, especially when there's more than one person. Put your family in the safest room and defend yourself inside. Keep the home advantage. There's only so many openings a home invader can efficiently get in.I definitely praise him for defending his home don't get me wrong. He's definitely a seasoned veteran. If he would've called the police right away there's a good chance that they could've been caught. Unfortunately been through this twice myself. 1st time cops were close enough and showed up while he was sneaking outside. 2nd time I can only assume that the 2 kids heard me chamber my shotgun and pistol. It was a cool summer night so we had the windows open. Saw them run off on my outside cameras. You just never know what can happen. Better to play defensively until you can't anymore or help comes.
Don't know where ur from. But he is military. So don't wait on cops. Assault rifle in hand I'm not waiting on cops. Their on my property. Game over!! But u rather them have time to brake in??
@@alexcortez830 Yeah but the “warning shot” was shot in the air it could have hit a innocent bystander, same goes for the eruption of bullets afterwards. He could have just sneaked behind him and took him out or waited for the cops Instead of causing more of a risk to innocent people around him.
@@gamerode441gamez3 I said the "warning shot" could've hit the neighbors. I'm not sure u got my comment. I had two.
Exactly "Defensively". I'm confused what is ur definition of that word? And yes I'm gonna use a analogy here. But defense to me is like if u playing basketball or any sport. Somebody is about to score u don't wait for somebody to help u. If somebody does great, but ur not waiting. Defense as in defend ur home. What if u cuddle up in a closet and u don't know what these guys r here for. Maybe they burn ur house down while u in the closet. Now what? U see them, they can't see u. Blast their ass. Not in flip flops tho.
Good to see that he was trying to protect his family and things. However giving a "warning shot" can get you in trouble in more ways than one. As seen in the video, it gave them a chance to see him and open fire. It can also potentially cause harm to others, and also damage things, it can also potentially get you into legal trouble. Go Navy! Hooyah!
Lol that was the only thing I that was wrong here. I really though oh man dude you let hem know your there!!! Eh, I guess if he shot him to kill without the chance to run it would have been different.

His only mistake was firing a warning shot into the air. You need to be responsible for every round coming out of your firearm and who knows where that one came down.
Don’t leave money nor values inside your vehicle when it’s parked outside of your residence’s garage or even an enclosed gated yard.

About the same time I noticed 3 people inside another car taking the stereo equipment out as quick as they could. They noticed me about the same time I noticed them. There were 3 of them and one of me so I just froze for a moment processing, and fortunately they all ran to the car and took off. I was close enough I could have taken the keys out of their getaway car before they got to it, but things happened so fast that thought didn't even cross my mind until they were already in it. Those people will most likely be charged with trespassing, attempted murder, and god knows what else, all for a laptop, some people need to rethink their life
With all due respect he did two things wrong, firing a warning shot and firing that shot into the air. That will get him in trouble with the law because that bullet has to come down somewhere and could possibly injure or kill somebody. The warning shot alerted these scumbags he was coming. He would have been much better off just to walk around the car while keeping low and then opening fire or if he was going to fire a warning shot, just shoot it into the ground, take cover behind that tree and start yelling to them to get out of there. They would have ran off.
Of course they would run if you just yell at them. Love how you can predict that.
I was going to say the same.
100 percent, he put someone at risk by firing into the air. of course, alerted the intruders which puts him and his family at risk. there was SAFER ways around it.
I was wondering about the shot in the air but I’m guessing he didn’t want to kill them and wanted to just fire to scare them. Also firing into the ground it can bounce back up and strike him.
