I have performed over 100 fuel system repairs because of DEF being put into diesel fuel. If DEF gets anywhere into the fuel system every fuel system component must be replaced. To include high pressure fuel pump, fuel tank, injectors, fuel lines, and all fuel filters. Once DEF crystallizes it destroys everything. To the idiot owners who want to do these jobs diy, you will end up doing it wrong and then having to bring It to us which will cost somewhere in the ball park pf 10 -12 grand. I work on 6.7 powerstroke diesel engines, and cannot stress enough do not buy a diesel unless it makes you money. It is not a grocery hauler.

We had to do a similar job last year for a fleet customer. It was over $15,000 if I remember. He was thrilled with the results as the truck was having some issues prior to that anyway and this fixed them also. Some of these companies loose thousands of dollars a day when one of these trucks breakdown.
What a lot of people miss when they say “you can get away with flushing it” is what happens 5 years down the line. All the metal surfaces start to corrode from DEF exposure and all it takes is for one chuck to get sucked into the injector pump to trash the system again. If you want a good running, reliable work truck 100,000 miles down the road, this is the only way to get there.
Hopefully the cost of parts will come down like hybrid batteries did as companies realize this will keep happening and they can manufacture kits for way less than going through your local dealer.

I accidentally put 2.5 gallons of DEF in my fuel system For my brand new 2023 f350 and drove about a mile and my truck started to sputter. I immediately pulled over to a nearby Wawa gas station and got my fuel tank drained because I knew I had def in the fuel system. I got it drained on the spot and ran a few gallons of diesel to flush even more out and than I completed filled the tank to dilute whatever def was still in the system and I put a super concentrated bottle of fuel treatment in the fuel tank. The truck was able to run without the sputter but I had a huge loss of engine performance because the system detected water in my system and recommended me to drain my fuel filter. I drained it and all of my power was restored. I even drained the filter a second time for good measures. I drove around until I got down to a half a tank of fuel and I fueled up again to the max a couple days ago. It’s been 3 weeks since the incident and the truck is still fine. I called around and was looking at online post. All i been getting was “that truck will never start again” and “you screwed up your truck. It’s over”. A lot of you guys tend to exaggerate. I’m not replacing my fuel tank and lines and pump. If you catch the problem early enough you will be fine.

@@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist how When I literally drained the system immediately after my engine sputtered? Then I ran a few gallons of diesel to flush it out even more, drained it again and filled up my system with fresh diesel, AND drained my fuel filters twice and I have a concentrated bottle of fuel treatment/injector cleaner that’s good for 300 gallons inside the system. I even filled it up again with fresh diesel after it was on half tank. The def fluid is way too diluted to cause any damage at this point. All of that stuff is going to get dumped into the filter. That’s what the filter is there for. It’s been drained of a lot of that def. I drained it until the pasty white stuff no longer appears. Some of these shops just want to take as much money as they can from out of people.

You're the expert, I just do it every day for a living. I appreciate that you shared your results, because others may have the same outcome. I suppose if not too much got into the system it may be able to be saved, I know I'd do it on my own vehicle, but then I'd be waiting for the day that it dies or fails to start on me. The thing about fixing vehicles professionally is that you have to stand behind your work and warranty the outcome.... Lets suppose I flushed it and got it running for a little bit, then it unexpectedly stalls in the middle of an intersection due to an injection pump failure and there is a crash.... lawsuit lottery. The customer now has full confidence in his new truck, takes it on long trips without a worry, tows with it, all that good stuff. Runs great and he's loving it.
The manufacturer themselves requires replacement of the whole system too. The DEF in this truck came from a pump so I think he put quite a bit in it, it all settled to the bottom of the tank and the pump picked up mostly all DEF and sent it through the whole system, the filter did not stop any of it.
Anyways I know what I've seen, and I know all the diesel sad stories I've seen, heard, and been a part of over the years. These diesel fuel systems eat themselves alive running with clean uncontaminated diesel so just give it some time.
      Thanks.

Our semi tractors at work have magnets in the filler cap housing and the def pumps will refuse to operate unless they “feel” the pull of that magnet. Is this not a thing on diesel pickups? Huge bummer.

I believe you are over reacting a little bit. It happened to me as well, because I was looking for diesel additive, and the guy at the gas station didn’t understand me. This happened to me back, when exhaust fluid (urea) became a thing in diesels, so it was new to me. The guy sold me the exhaust fluid as a diesel additive. And it was in a small 1 gallon bottle, so I opened it and emptied the bottle into my gas tank. Only at the end I realized the mistake.
So I brought a diesel additive emulsifier right away, added to the tank and filled it up. Then drove it until it went empty. Then filled up again, and drove it until it went half way empty. Then filled up again completely.
I never had any problems with the engine!

I had the car for 2 years. And when I bought it, it was already over 12 years old and this event happened to me at the beginning of the ownership. So it lasted 2 years at me.

On a paying customer vehicle it’s hard to guarantee the repair unless we are replacing everything.

We have a engine technology makes the diesel engines burn like the gasoline engines. Therefore, it doesn't need after-treatment fluid with associated headache. The technology can be retrofitted onto the existing engines. The general idea is as follows,
[High Efficiency Low Emission Hybrid ICE:]
By simply splitting the ring-section from its skirt - to be operated by a (valvetrain-like) piston-train to pump the gases during the intake and exhaust strokes, and combined with the skirt to complete the compression and power strokes - can achieve the hybrid. Which completes the 4 strokes, different in both displacements and periods, in every engine revolution - called D-cycle (Differential-stroke cycle) - a hybrid of the 2-/4-cycles.
The D-cycle’s controllable exhaust strokes can be shortened to retain high amount of burnt gases to control the ignition initiation and combustion rates for the HCCI/LTC (homogeneously charged compression ignition with low temperature combustion). When combined with the (gasoline type) stoichiometric air/fuel ratio intake under high-compression ignition, it is the diesel-gasoline hybrid with the benefits of both - called SCCI/LTC-BGR (Burnt Gas Retention).
The resultant hybrid can have Atkinson-cycle strokes, whole engine working at lower rpm, fewer cylinders with lighter engine support and vehicle styling, weight and efficiency gains, and etc. Diesel engines can avoid soot and NOx formation saving expensive after treatments with lower noises. Gasoline engines can enjoy diesel type (within structural limitations) efficiency (test shown >20%) and torque gains ( >2.5x).
