      I didn’t need to change the chain on this engine. It’s a case by case basis, but if you have high miles you should expect to need a new chain at some point. They should have inspected it all while it was apart.

    After you had jacked up the engine to access the bolts and then needed to take off the oil pan where did you have the floor jack set? Or did you just replace the motor mount temporarily while working on the underside of the engine?

    Have you ever seen a barometric pressure sensor on a GM with a bias voltage on the signal wire? (I know that a 2014 VW Jetta has a bias voltage on the signal wire of the charge air pressure sensor.) 3 weeks ago, Matt from Schrodingers Box did a very interesting case study in "2017 Malibu P2227 Car Dealer Asks Me to Fix It! (Free Video from my pay channel)". He condemned the PCM, but I am thinking there is a small possibility the anomaly that he saw was simply a bias voltage. He unplugged the barometric pressure sensor (part of the mass airflow sensor assembly) and found there was 3.4 volts on the signal wire even after unplugging the sensor. I am thinking that GM updated that circuit to include a bias voltage. The mass airflow sensor had recently been replaced at a dealership and after replacement still had a code. My theory is that the dealer tech installed the wrong mass airflow sensor for that engine, resulting in a code after replacement. But my theory hinges on whether or not GM updated their barometric pressure sensor circuit to include a bias voltage on the signal wire. I was just wondering if you have ever seen that.

    • @DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
      @DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 2 дня назад

      Usually the bias is a solid 5.0V which is used for diagnostic purposes indicating an open circuit. So if he measured 3.4V with no current flowing that’s definitely suspect for a faulty PCM, but I don’t know if he tested the harness or what. Is this a video on RUclips? Sounds like I need to check it out.

      @plowe6751 2 дня назад

      He cut the signal wire of the barometric pressure sensor and there was still 3.4 volts at the PCM afterward. That means the voltage was coming from the PCM. I am thinking that could be bias voltage. Or may be not.

    • @DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
      @DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 2 дня назад

      @plowe6751 no the bias should go to 5.0V, that’s how the ECM is able to detect the open circuit so I’d agree with faulty ECM after checking power and grounds to it. The normal range of the signal circuit is say 0.25 to 4.75V during operation, the ECM sees each 0.01 or 0.05 step in voltage as a point of data…. Anything higher or lower than that and it will set a “Low” or “High” code. The low or high almost instantly tells you what kind of fault you’re looking for. There is also a signal supply voltage and a signal return voltage, the supply voltage is always 5.0V and the return voltage varies as it is affected by the sensor output and that’s what the ECM measures for data. I guess after I watch this video I’ll know what you’re talking about. Maybe I’ll do a quick check next time I get one in the shop.

    Not a complaint, doesnt ASE teach us to do a good visual inpsection near the beginning of our job on each vehicle? We with experience know not to play with wire harnesses before running some tests but that AM BOX was a dead giveaway in plain site with a plain label. I am more happy for the tutorial in how to get to this problem as if the little box was not in plain site such as under the dash where most AM JUNK gets installed, but that area needs to be taught to the young troops as one of the initial inspection areas looking for a box and bundle of wires that look out of place. I am with you on this video but for after the fact teaching purposes, is speed in a repair based on the type of pay system the new mechanic will be under with huge time constraints. In this specific scenario, the SPEED BOX should have been noticed right away, fix the GND wire, then assume the box is bad due to the change in the waveform after fixing the GND wire, and bypass the series circuit as you have shown, Bobs your Uncle within the first hour of diagnosis with a reapir and charge 2 hours total ethically, cheers. LOVE YOUR STUFF MATE Lets assume we live out in the countryside and we are use to looking for Rodent Damage, this AM BOX problem found easily. Lets assume we live in the city and we watch some YT Videos about some Good Ol Boys fixin trucks with Rodent Damage, we ought to apply what has been learned into our routine early in life. Back to binge-watching more of your stuff. I am also a scope guy so take the time to monitor your signals in even the easiest of jobs as we all should use up our first hour of diag to learn and gather more waveforms at specific locations around the vehicle to keep in our private library. OH BY THE WAY, you can also teach your man to complete 12 hours of billible work (by the labor guide rate) in an 8 hour day, that ought to be his goal in life as long as he is getting paid for the 12 billible hours when that time in life is upon him. FORGOT, you are the first person wanting to replace that AM JUNK after thousands of videos, that is not our job IMHO, we fix the car, give the JUNK to the owner, explain that if they want to reinstall new JUNK, protect it better next time, here is where I repaired your 2 wires and where you can tie back in at that location, thank you. On to the next job.

    Cast iron head, iron bolts, and iron nut. You are going to weld all three items together. That trick only works with aluminum heads because the bolt and cylinder head are different metals that wont weld together unless you miss. The electron flow through the cylinder head to bolt itself will cause the two to weld together. Something my shop foreman actually taught me... I don't weld but I'm curious enough to ask why something can't be done! I am sure you learned that you made your job infinitely harder when you found out that stud welded itself to the cylinder head!

I did show the part where more of the bolt broke off deeper in the hole and that was when I gave up because I had been getting it to move slowly each attempt, but it takes forever to clean up and let things cool down between attempts. Your first attempt is usually the defining moment and the first attempt on one side went less than ideal.

      @@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist Risk vs reward. Extraction set is your best bet to start. You can always attempt to weld it out after. You welded that bolt into the cylinder head... can tell because you keep breaking off parts of it deeper and deeper. We have "youtube" certified welders at our shop that weld out studs on hemi's all day long... why? Because that trick only works 100% of the time when its an aluminum head... there is quite literally 0% risk.

      @verajavi12 yes one of these days I’ll get me a TIG welder. I have great success with this method… sure beats drilling a hole crooked or off center. I’ve even seen a guy drill too deep and have coolant come shooting out of the hole.

    Ford mechanic here: wish I had the time to make these videos, glad you are!!! another great simple video for non-mechanics to save money and diagnose themselves!!! You may also check before your cats and also 02 sensors that may also leak, much more rare to happen but if the original has been replaced before/milage of vehicle it’s always possible. When checking for exhaust leaks CHECK EVERYWHERE even if you find one leak! Save time and money upfront checking the whole system.

      @@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist don’t ya love when that happens? It’s always the “one time” you didn’t check this or that lol. Right now I’m dealing with a 2014 F150 5.0 with Codes of A/BCamshaft bank 1-2. So I replaced all four (2 on each side) Cam sensors and also the 4 VVT SOLENOIDS (2 on each side), 8 sensors total only for all those codes to come back, P0014 P0024 P0022 P0365. Despite changing all sensors didn’t change anything lol

      I haven’t had the pleasure of working on that engine. I did chains on a 3.5L way back and got the crank gear one tooth off, then had to tear it back apart and retime. Had another guy check the timing before I put it back together and it was once again one tooth off because it was difficult to see the marks. Oopsie.

      @@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist oh no, I am not a fan of those motors haha. So much crap in the way. Speaking of crap keep this in mind! In 2012-14 (I’m not sure if ford updated this issue in 2015-present though) So yea 2012-14 ford dropped the gen 1 5.0 in the F150 while the engineers didn’t leave enough room to get one of the the rear CAM Sensors (driver side) The only way to get to it is to drop the cab or drill a whole through the firewall (and oh boy yes I know lol) but when you try pulling that sensor out, your still a quarter inch short from pulling it out of the back of the block. So whenever customers come in I give them the option to blow 10k in order to drop the front end down and if you do that might as well do the water pump and suspension lol or 2k to drill a 1 inch hole that’s a few inches away from the gas pedal to replace one of the 4 cam sensors So mechanic to mechanic whenever you do have the pleasure just know those are the only 2 options 😂😂 and the said part is you have no issues getting the other 2 cam sensors on the passenger side. Not cool lol

      How precious and sweet of them to design in a little gift like that. The things I see today, the average customer will never be able to afford repairs and most of these vehicles will end up in the scrap yard as plastic waste.

    Say, are you moonlighting since you're not using the garage with lifts? Does it even pay to do all those repairs on a vehicle as old as that?

    • @DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
      @DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 15 дней назад

      I could make videos upon videos just with my family fleet of vehicles. I have a back log of family vehicles that need maintenance and repairs so I’m sure you’ll see a few more like this. Need to build a shop and install a lift… it’s on the list. If the vehicle is paid off sometimes a small investment is worth it. All my vehicles are older and have high miles, yet are very dependable. The older ones are usually cheaper to keep on the road, and most of the time your average gear head can handle most repairs on the older stuff.

    • @DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
      @DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 15 дней назад

      You just carefully build it up and try not to use too much heat, it’s hard to get anything to stick to the cast iron unless you go crazy with the heat. Usually I can always get them out by welding, but this was an awkward position and took many attempts so it was beginning to cost too much time between attempts.
