@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Duncan, one time I was standing outside of nottingham with a few other people waiting for the sisters of battle limited box set to come out. It was freezing cold and we'd waited over an hour when we saw you get out your car. I shouted 'it's freezing duncan. Can you give us two coats'. You sort of looked our way, said nothing, then went into the staff entrance. A week or so later it was announced you're leaving. ....if my bad pun was responsible for you quitting games workshop I just want to apologise.
Omg, that 'non-outtake' at the end where Duncan laughs and talks to a disembodied voice makes him actually appear human. Now I have doubt about my theory he is a perfect Mini-painting robot.
Hello all. Try this - Paint your zombie flesh bubblegum pink - then a full strength wash of Beil-Tan green / let dry. Then a full strength wash of Reikland fleshshade. The green wash will mute the pink and the fleshshade will even everything out. Your base zombie skin will now be a mottled pink/green/reddish brown. To highlight, take a normal skin tone and thin it down with the Beil-tan green.
As a beginner painter I would love a new fresh tutorial video series on how to layer, highlight, shade, gloss, etc. That would be amazing Duncan, I find most of these on the WH site but a new fresh series with a bit more detail would be amazing. Thank you for all your hard work and I wish you the best!!
What an awesome and timely issue. Was mentally preparing to paint my first helmetless head and there are tons of ideas I can use. Plus, I will definitely use these ideas for my future Nurgle bois.
Excellent presentation once again from Duncan and the D.R.P.A team, thanks heaps always a pleasure to watch. Fade in/out image and backing track, editing, script and even light comic relief, even if it was a little wooden 😂 so professional…a shining example of the next level of fantastic content and creators that we the fickle viewers hope for and why we love RUclips 5 stars.
Wow, thanks for the kind words. The DRPA team is myself and Roger, jest the 2 of us. And yes, the light comic relief was a little wooden but we just couldn't leaf it alone 😁
I know this is an older video, but I got to say Duncan you are an inspiration. When I first got into the hobby, I watched up SO many of your videos. Even on models that i don't use.. I'm more of an AOS and fantasy player painter. But I always found your tutorials extremely insightful and helpful. I doubt you'll see this. But just wanted to out that out there. I backed your Two Thin Coats paint Kickstarter at the highest level and was even able to get in for the early bird. Could not press the help fund button quick enough. Even before asking the wife.. lol Eagerly waiting for my KS rewards. Even just bought a paint rack specifically for your paints. Keep up a the amazing work you do for the community.
I'm here for Duncan being confident enough in his new career to question his former employer's design choices. Signed, a guy who loves the new zombies but also think the tree roots are meh
Honestly, those roots took this kit from a "damn I want a set even if I don't play AoS" to a "maybe if I can find a good tutorial on removing them then find them heavily discounted somewhere". I'll never understand this design choice.
@@NecromediaNetwork That's a possibility, and Could likely be done with just a paintjob. From what I have seen of the sprue, the roots are extensive and the removal of them would require resculpting of detail such as folds in cloth etc. That is a lot of work for a horde type unit, so the easiest thing would likely be to use a paint job to turn them into something else, such as tenticles.
'You might have twigged (that) these guys have got some branches growing out of them.' You didn't even break cadence when you delivered that pun. Well done.
Amazing work, you always teach me a lot with your painting tutorials, I really appreciate it. Thank you for the help and I will be waiting for the next one
There'll be a lot of paint colours to choose from for Dead Walkers flesh. Your painting method is what I'll use for them, thanks for the colour options. Those models are fantastic! 👌
I've been cheating with mixing plaguebearer and guilliman flesh contrasts, mixing in some cygor brown to give darker tones too, will definitely be trying out the first grey colour scheme too!
Brilliant tutorial. I'll be heading out tomorrow at my local stockest to buy a couple boxes. I really love how GW have created these new zombies a much needed revival from the old zombies they used to sell in my opinion
great video and explanation mate! Would have loved to see them al together as making zombies seem individual and random but still look good in a group is special demand for zombie units specifically. Do another one with a big group, you can never have enough zombies! Thanks anyway!
I now need to build a bolt action grenadier / zombie/ wolfenstien unit to go with my unit of red skulls. Thanks for another build inspiration. But first my 80s d&d character has arrived from hero forge, again thanks to you. Stay safe.
Old dried blood is dark brown, not quite black. That's because the molecule that makes blood red is iron oxide, AKA rust. Vallejo Panzer Aces Dark Rust is my go-to for old blood stains.
Idea: make the lower parts (like legs and the bottom of arms) or the model's back half have a purple tinge - that way it looks like blood pooling at the bottom of a corpse due to the lack of circulation.
As a non native english speaker, it took me a couple of times hearing it to realize that "smallayrbrush" (7:28) is not "small air brush" (which doesn't make much sense anyway), but "small layer brush". This is why enunciating is important. 😅 Of course it's shown on screen in text which helps a ton, though earlier on in this video it says "small layer brush" even though Duncan says and uses a medium one. 🙂
Duncan, if this wasn't solely a skin tone tutorial would you still complete steps 1 through 4 on just the skin before moving on to painting, shading and highlighting the other parts of the mini or... Would you perform those same steps on all parts of the mini at the same time ? Just curious because I'm going to use your skin tones from this video on my Zombicide: Fort Hendrix, Zombie Soldiers miniatures and I'd like to paint them how you would do them. Thanks and 👍as always.
You can do it either way. If all your base colours share the same shade then you can basecoat and shade at the same time then layer and highlight as you see fit. Otherwise just apply the basecoats that share the same wash/shade and then repeat each group of colours as needed. There is no right or wrong way just whatever feels best to you 😊
noooooo I just finished painting my zombicide minis...this is way too late now :// just kidding! :p Really educational. I think I learned a lot for my next project(s) and I gotta try out that blood effect. Thank you!
when i was a kid, i asked my grandpa if he ever killed any germans in the war. he wouldnt answer. said it was grown up stuff, so i asked if the germans ever tried to kill him,. but he got real quiet. he said he was killed every time he stepped on enemy territory. every day he woke up and said rest in peace, now get up and go to war. then after a few years of pretending to be dead he was alive. thats the trick of it, i think. we do what we need to do, then we live. but no matter what we find in D.C., i know we'll be ok , because this is how we survive. we tell ourselfs that we are the walking dead. .
"You might have 'twigged' that they have bits of tree growing out of them". That was an awful pun, but I laughed.
There were a few more at the end too. We just couldn't leaf them alone 😁

They have roots growing out of them because the zombies where in the ground, so they grew through them before they rose back up :)
Perfect timing, my Rotters arrived in the mail this weak :)
