I went to jmu in Harrisonburg. I loved living there. My biggest issue was there wasn't any jobs or at least a lack of jobs. I would've stayed if there were more jobs.
I was an immigrant that moved to Harrisonburg in 1996 and sorta grew up there went to high school in Harrisonburg, left Harrisonburg for college and my first job but evenually moved back to Hburg to get my MBA at JMU a few years later. Harrisonburg to me personally was my home for a longest time, and would always be a very special place in my heart. Now I live in Orange County California and still missing Harrisonburg from time to time...
I'll be working with the Appalachian conservation corps. Thanks for the inside. I'll be camping around Harrisonburg. Hoping I can integrate while I'm not in the trees
What about medical facilities and quality of medical care? What about senior activities? Does JMU offer senior classes, activities? Nice video but please expand and address my questions.
"The first con is the lack of high end groceries". Lmao my guy have you been to the Friendly City Coop. The greatest little grocery store in the world and its also one of my favorite things about living downtown.
Can you tell us about the school systems for families that have school going children elementary- high school; that may want to move to Harrisonburg? Can you compare with schools in Northern Virginia?
The municipality keeps spending moneys on programs without concern for the fact that the average job sector here cannot keep pace with the tax increases! Not against social programs. We should and need to help our brother. Im talking about fiscal responsibility. And the two universities and nearby colleges keep housing and rent prices out of the reach of most of the mean labor: LSC, poultry work, university employees... Then on top, were an official sanctuary city where the federal government resettles the worlds diaspora here, because theres a mix of work types suitable for peoples of different cultures and needs. And yes, crime is up. In the last month we've had another homicide in, yes, Walmart. There are three in this town. Thefts from automobile are on the rise, panhandling and shoplifting.
Awesome video. Would anyone in the comments who'd know care to elaborate on the pros and cons of living in Winchester vs. Harrisonburg? I'm taking the steps to move out of my parents' house, and I definitely know I want to live in one of these two towns.
Hi. I am a single girl Refugee. My resettlement agency is in Harrisonburg and will settle me there. Since i am all new here and have little money and as you mentioned cons, how is it possible to ask my resettlement agency to get me a place in other city but not Harrisonburg? 😔 i dont have car i dont have job how am i gonna afford everything? I am so concerned
The con that is constantly glossed over JMU. during the school year traffic is a Nightmare, the construction he refers to is adding new housing [aimed for jmu students or millionaire retirees. Nothing in-between] which you can now see I'll,starved deer herds stuck in the middle of suburbia of rapid habitat loss.. local gov refuses to install proper sidewalks bc they don't want herds of college students walking around on Saturday nights & it cause issues for locals who can't afford to do anything but walk. Also jmu is basically an open campus..locals will tell you AVOID IT. it's the most dangerous part of hburg & the school does it's best to hush up the statistics..those lovely little police call towers with the glowing blue button that makes you feel safe? They were only installed bc of a rape spree that happened several years ago, also see the jmu riots & prostitution rings..NO, local businesses and people DO NOT like Jmu..we like ur money,sure..but notice on graduation day it is becoming harder to find sit down dinning? That bc students dip out & party instead of coming to work for shifts They asked for, & locals w no choice but to work no longer care to deal with rudeness & impatience when the entire building is packed.....JMU students are the reasons local swimming areas get closed off every few years. 1 (located halfway to WV )is now permanently closed due to being trashed repeatedly. And all those job opportunities he refers to? They now prefer going thru temp agencies & primary work you can actually get without waiting Months to be officially hired is ..restaurant work...even the retail chains hire only seasonal/ or ""hire to fire" as most locals will put it. But yeah its called the friendly city for reason. Also, don't roll your eyes or mock the dialect, makes you look like an ass & "hon" is a non-binary, casual term NO IS trying to Flirt or Get with ur Spouse.STFU. You will probably also hear "y'all be safe/take care/etc"...it's not a threat, it's a common respectful good-bye..reason: bc we r friendly & genuinely care for others. I was born & raised here. Bc of the influx of jmu population.that now just won't leave. I, as many many others have already chosen, will not be long to move away from this area. It is rapidly becoming a metropolitan area with all the accompanying problems and trash.
@@briancastro7725 I can't believe there's a place in H'burg that charges for parking. But I guess i haven't lived there since '98. Things change I guess.
I’ve done a bit of my own research in this time. And I’m finding very few instances where the police have violated a persons rights be it a person of color or otherwise which is refreshing. Considering the state in which you are located
Local cops are great. The local prosecutor (in my opinion only - and; if it is still Marsha Garst) is a bad person. In my case there (stolen car) she was in favor of letting the thief keep it as he was involved in another court case she wanted to win.
Hi Ana, Friendly City Co-op in downtown Harrisonburg is a great place to get some Organic options. Magpie Diner that just recently opened up tries to have a couple options. Beyond and Boboko (Asian Fusion and Indonesian cuisine respectively) have some options as well. Unfortunately our grocery options are still somewhat limited in the area (one of the cons from the video).
-_- just order a salad. Or look online at the menus. There are plenty of vegan options. Its a city, yes there are plenty of options for everyone..be sure to tip ... Or ya know cook for yourself..
The local pd is a lot of local people who want to do good and just as many people with superiority complexes that just like to intimidate and bully ppl they think are too ignorant to handle it ... Doesn't matter your skin color here, if you have a brush with law 50/50 as to whether you'll be ok or not..
His tenants don't even wanna deal with him directly. They'd like to stay but plz invite squatters extended family and friends to stay on the property. And a big FU bill 4 lowballing the tree cutter and francel
Even my dad. I he fails to acknowlege his failults and bs he's getting into a BIG fight with me with a weapon if necessary and we'll argue in court again
Don't intrude the case bill. 1% and I'm lookin to rough him up 4 lowballing everyone and Bothering JMU who knows my heart bleeds purple. So therefore welcome to a settlement
La procahine time he alerts hpd to manhandle me he's getting into a BIG fight with LGBT on CL and ag1stop. Don't u dare try and put blood pressure on me and curse in arabic

I visit the area! It’s such beautiful area ❤ nice people!! So excited to move there
We've really enjoyed living here as long as we have!

I’ve been in Harrisonburg Virginia. So it’s good 👍🏻 city and friendly people.

I did
If your hunting for apartments I'd recommend some of the smaller outlying areas..save yourself a fortune & commute the 10-15 min
I lived in both Winchester and near Harrisonburg, but I haven't lived in Winchester in many years. I prefer Harrisonburg.
I moved up there like 22 years ago to work at Wampler. Quite a job, I didn’t last long lol, but I’m considering moving up that way again. Cool place.

Wow you sound pretty ignorant
Hi! What about vegan options? (Restaurants and supermarket options)

No Chucky Cheese is a bad thing? The pizza sucks but at least it's overpriced...
What are the relations like amongst the justices system and people of colors? Does this location have a negative relationship with POC?
Everyone is welcome here, we’re not called the friendly city for nothing
When I lived there I felt welcomed
