    I'm so happy that this helped you! Hemingway is tough because his dialogue can be cryptic. He uses "sub-text," which means that the characters imply a lot rather than saying things directly. The reader has to infer and "hear" what they are REALLY saying by "reading between the lines." A challenge!
    I wish I had a video on "A Clean, Well-lighted Place" for you. That's a good suggestion for the next one! Thanks.

    Yes, I agree! The train station definitely represents a transition for both of them! I guess the man thinks that other people in the station were waiting "reasonably", because unlike the other people are all heading to whatever amazing journey, their relationship will probably end up afterwards..

    I read this story twice and tried to figure out if I was missing something. I was, I missed the whole thing. First I thought it was about them drinking absinthe, then I re read and found something about an operation, thinking maybe breast implants, or something, but it wasn't an option when this story was written. So I Googled around a bit and found this video and it cleared it up completely. Thanks!

    Interesting! My take on it is that the man in the story is not ready for marriage and a family. I don't know if he still thinks she should have the baby, but I'm not seeing excitement on his side. He could be down on one knee proposing to her or saying, "We'll make this work," but he isn't. He's hesitating and distancing himself. He's not in a father mode. What do you think?

  • @SixMinuteScholar
    @SixMinuteScholar  11 лет назад

    Thanks! I could make a case for either one being more mature. He is against starting a family because he is realistic about the limits of this relationship, right? She is for having a child because she is in touch with the child, the life inside her. So the reader is left in a conflict, much as the characters are, trying to decide which is the more adult way to look at this. Does this help?

    Good question! I'd say that the ending smile is a fake one. She isn't "fine" at all. Carrying the bags to the other side is a practical thing; they need to move the suitcases to where the train will be. However, we can looks at this as a metaphor, too. They will leave this place, having "crossed over" into a new understanding about the relationship. A doomed relationship, I think.
