Thank you for clarifying what a microphonic tube is. I may have retired a pair of E80cc Phillips special quality tubes too early. Because I started to hear microphonics every time I touch the volume pot…… Excellent sounding tubes I have to say. I’ll have to put them back into your excellent sounding E80 cc preamp keep up the good work!
Excellent video. I have a pairs of Sylvania 6SN7W short bottle tubes that test low microphonics and Brimar CV1988 brown base tubes that are much higher in microphonics. They both are beautiful sounding tubes in my newly built 6 or 12SN7 preamp.
@@rasmus.O.B great question! Possibly a tiny bit of play inside the tube, which makes sense when understand the internal parts need to be able to expand as the tube warms up and contract when the tube cools down. But it could also be related to input grid wiring, this is where the signal is applied to the tube, so any issues with it could cause all sorts of problems.
Nice informative video. I put isolation feet under my Freya noval and noticed an improvement in clarity. Is this possible based on your microphonics discussion? Also three of the four stock 6n1p tubes supplied have slight ticking through the speakers when i change volume I presume this is due to microphonics as this does not happen with other tubes in the gain stage. Thanks for any advice or comments
@@sopasadena1499 The freya has internal switches that are noisy, I don't mean electrically noisy, but physically noisy and of course knowing that vacuum tubes are microphonic, it's easy to understand why some tubes would pickup this sound and amplify it. Luckily you probably never engage a switch while actually listening, so it's a none issue. Isolation in any form can change the sonics of your system IF the platform you place your gear on is transmitting room vibrations. This is probably becoming more and more common as houses and apartments are built cheaper and cheaper. A particularly bad flooring is composite manufactured snap together floating types. We have solid oak on top of solid douglas fir on top of solid fir joists - needless to say it doesn't move much!

Great video! Can you explain why a tube would be, or would become, microphonic? Something physically loose inside the tube?
