  • "Possession," Andrzej Żuławski's practically apocalyptic reimagining of his own divorce, commits incomparably honest thoughts and feelings to screen with singular intensity.

    It is not a movie, but AN experience. I saw it just after I had a breakup after a long-term relationship, and this bizarre, surreal kaleidoscope resonated like no other film I watched before. Just raw emotion, nothing else. Masterpiece. And Isabelle Adjani is the most underrated actress ever IMHO, her performances in La Reigne Margot and Nosferatu are top-class.
    p.s. such a wonderful channel you have here, keep going! It deserves much more attention.

      Can't help but recommend "My Friend Ivan Lapchin" and "Khrustalev, My Car!" by Alexey German, "Agony" by Elem Klimov ( "Come and See" is pretty well-known, and "Agony" is something similar) and "Zerograd" by Karen Shakhnazarov for more surreal eastern-european cinema. You can find almost all of it on RUclips with subtitles.

      @WildFlicks I could be wrong. I watched it as a cheat for college to skip a bit of reading. Pretty sure it was on youtube. I'll try and find it. I actually just started to organise all my play books from college and want to get back into reading them.

    I think that the two different versions of themselves are who they are after the divorce/ seperation.
    At the end she is with her son considering going back to her ex who is completely a different person.
    He is knocking at the door at the end and she has to decide whether to listen to the warning signs or whether to open it.

      When I first checked it out, I went for the mega cheap region 1 South Korean DVD off eBay - from what I remember it was perfectly watchable. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere. I have the mondo vision blu-ray now, which is region free and looks amazing, but it’s pricey. Hope you’re able to check it out soon!

    Without reading about the movie's origins, my impression was that the Possession speaks foremost about the wife being dominated and controlled by the two men - and probably by the creature, as well. Furthermore, the two men in the love triangle try to assert dominance between each other, as well. Still trying to make more sense about finding God in disease, the dog motif (I guess its loyalty) and many other nuggets. It's like you said - the movie is not just an autobiographical ejaculation, it's so much more!

    I think Dr. Peterson’s characterization of order as male and chaos as female is uselessly over-simplistic and vague … but here we have male as order and female as chaos a bit after the 3:00 mark

    • @WildFlicks
      @WildFlicks  Год назад +2

      Hmm… a similar archetypal characterization maybe, but I’m also not sure it’s that simple here, or that “freedom” and “chaos” are the same thing.
      While Mark and Anna both alternately behave in understandable and alienating ways, one of Żuławski’s stated intentions with the film was to interrogate and critique male possessiveness in particular, and Mark’s futile desire for control.
      This is often done through the other characters like Anna and Heinrich who are uh to say the least “chaotic,” especially from his POV, but Anna in particular is so much more than just that. Even Helen, as Mark’s ideal, lectures him on his worldview/attitudes.
