Hard to believe but it's true! Not only does this family make their own fuel from plastic but they are also totally self sufficient on a very remote island named Little Corn, in the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua!
From making their own electricity, food, soaps and using techniques such as aquaponics, Derek will tell you his story on how he got to live the way he does today.
A truly inspiring family to is a role model for other communities and the way we should all live nowadays.

Hi.
This is beautiful from so many perspectives.
People should and hopefully do know by now that the amount of garbage people produce is outrageous.
Some products are packed in bags which are 3 times the size of the product they envelop.
So, some kind of management of this garbage is a necessity. If there is a possibility that from the process of managing the garbage, something usable comes out, then of course, that's even better.
That's what recycling is.
The only ugly part, is that the comment section is filled with un-recyclable garbage.
Individuals that have absolutely no environmental problem with the pollution from their vehicles, but suddenly have an environmental problem if someone implements a recycling process of garbage which emits a very considerably lower amount of pollution in comparison to their beloved four wheeled mobile pollution dispensers.
They don't have ANY environmental problem with the polluting process of producing packages that turn into garbage, but they suddenly have an environmental problem with the recycling of garbage.
In truth, they are the people who support one of the highest level of crookery, which is the one that sells for decades, overpriced fossil fuel and drains billions of people of their money.
EXACTLY the same with the electrical vehicles production or with the photovoltaic panels production or even with the wind turbines.
Those crooks always tried to scare the fools with the lie that these are the products that harm the environment.
They've never had ANY problem with the production of any other products, noo, not even bullets or guns.
No, because those products limit freedom, whereas recycling and solar panels and electrical vehicles grant more freedom, the freedom to be independent of what someone forces you to buy at the cost they set.
Similarly with the forests. People used to use wood to keep their shelters warm and forests were forests. Now, people were _persuaded_ to choose alternatives to wood to make heat, but it's now when entire forests disappear.
But you know what's nice? If you analyze them, even for just a bit, because of their life mentality and because they support what's against humanity and therefore against them very selves, they grow wider and fatter and filled with illnesses and diseases, and of course more than ever proned to blame everyone but themselves for their condition.
But enough with that, garbage with garbage, and _humane_s with _humane_s.
You, the one who still enjoys the beautiful picture of a better world which is instilled in your imagination, if you cannot recycle garbage, don't worry, but do you best to lower the amount of physical and mental garbage you produce, so you can better see that picture until it becomes reality.
You wanted cars and honks and noise and concrete and wealth and riches, and now, seeing what they are, you want to feel the earth with your feet, you want to hear the nature, you want calmness and peace.
A good sign of evolution this setting aside of what you thought you need and praising what you always had and never before embraced.
Living in this world, we have the opportunity to shape it and it's shape is, always was and always will be, the reflection of what we care about.

I agree but hard to do when we see garbage trucks being dumped in the Amazon daily by the hundreds. Kind of like the speed limit. It only works if ppl follow it. How many do? Just like money, we all agree that a hundred dollar bill is worth a hundred bucks. Either the whole earth is on the same save the planet page or ??? If I'm using sun, wind for all my power needs living next to a coal burning power plant no matter how much I don't use or refuse to use by all means is moot when next door they're sending forever chemicals in the air to pollute the world cause the smog clouds don't just sit over USA they move all over. Plastic is the biggest joke their is. I prefer glass or cardboard. And most things can't be recycled at all. They put that symbol on all plastics even though only 30 percent can be truly recycled. Now we have to pay for earlier generations ignorance and greed.

This is the most badass thing. I thought using my old semi truck used oil to heat my barn was cool but taking trash and making fuel out of it is fucking Genius as hell.
We need more people like this guy he obviously paid attention in school because he knows the cycle of the environment burning fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide and and plants use carbon dioxide and make oxygen so this guy uses garage to make fuels that make carbon dioxide to run machines for growing plants that make oxygen for animals and we have an environmentally friendly sustainable cycle that doesn't force people to choose between a clean environment and economic development
The process of turning plastic to oil is called pyrolysis. Usually it is done in a pressurised oven and the excess gas can be used to heat the plastic in a closed loop system.
Lol, an anime character named Senku from Dr.Stone made one in his classroom just like you described, it's the only reason I know about, but never did I actually think it was possible, I didn't research it after watching the show, so this video was a surprise to me.

Do u have a video ur way sounds a million times better then this guys moonshine gas is made, I really want to do this if I can find a way to make it profitable I can setup shop in the Philippines and fix the problem of mess in the rivers because people would much rather bring there trash to be put in a system they can get a gas credit to use to purchase gas for then just throwing it in the river or on the ground. This could be a solution to the problems we have of being stupid humans and Africa or India all these places have kids picking through garbage if they could make gas they could be better off.

To me that "diesel" lit up fast and bright from a match. I've seen matches put out in diesel. Then again, apparently his diesel generator runs on it...🤔.
Also, I'm glad he's cleaning up and making use of all the plastic we've allowed to float up on his beach, but the nasty smokey fire for his distillery isn't exactly environmentally friendly. Sorry about the complaints, just a couple of points...I did enjoy the video and am subscribing, ☺️

We always hear how many tones of plastic pollution are in the ocean and rivers and everywhere, if we return our plastic for a few cents, a diesel or fuel in general could be produced.

Rather than burning wood why not use a low boiling fraction to feed a blast burner? As a note of caution: Depending on the feed plastic you could be getting some very toxic material that will make abnormally toxic exhaust when partially burnt in a simple Diesel engine. PP and PE will give mostly alkanes and alkenes (good) PS gives styrene and other aromatics (like benzene) (less good) polyesters, nylons and polyimides will give very complex distillates (possibly worse) PVC and PTFE will make hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid respectively and chloro(fluoro)carbons (very bad). The tar left over in the still might be toxic.
how to seperate out the fractions? based on type of plastic?
Fractions are separated by boiling point so it you’d have to analyze output for this particular still , set up a more efficient reflux condenser and cut by temperature. A really interesting study would be looking at number of birth defects and cancers on the island over the next 40 years.
PTFE is pretty rare and you'd be able to identify it. Overheating of PTFE generates fumes of highly toxic PFIB and poses a serious health hazard to the human respiratory tract. PFIB is approximately ten times as toxic as phosgene. Inhalation of this gas can cause pulmonary edema, which can lead to death.
Chemist here. Yes, you are absolutely right. On the other hand: with a little bit of common knowledge, you can pretty well guess which product is which material and pick the "good" stuff. I believe a responsible person can do this properly, but a careless person will do lots of damage to themselves and the environment. And yes, the leftover tar is definitely toxic and needs proper disposal (costs!)
you my new found friend are living my dream. i have been down the road of alternate fuels, ( used veg oil to run my diesel car for 10 yrs, make bio diesel, make soap, build solar cells from broken cells, recycle old 12v 200amh batteries, wind gensets from fisher n paykel washing motors, fresh water from sea water solar stills, water heaters using the insides of foil chip packets, used motor oil recycling/filtering, for heating and reuse as engine lube.

Diesel doesn’t burn like that (it has to be heated and aspirated to burn). It probably closer to kerosine as a fraction. I hope you have a good exhaust system as that fuel would most likely contain lots of sulphur and chloride and other compounds found in plastics. In other words it would be very toxic/poisonous fumes.

Nothing legally driving on any road in the western world is nearly as toxic as the gases this setup produces. It is completely fine if you don't care, it is completely fine if this guy decides to inhale that shit anyways, but it is also okay to point out the toxicity.
You have to be careful which plastics are used. Not Vinyl, PVC, ABS, Nor Styrene. All can produce poisons such as hydrogen cyanide and other nasties. Use only PE, HDPE, LDPE, we also use PET as most of the plastic seems to be bottles, some people don't as waxes can form in the pipe and cause a blockage if used motor oil isn't used or they don't have enough of the HDPE plastics for the waxes to dissolve into, other people may have better luck sourcing the good stuff better than we. Richer plastic piles to mine. :)
These plastics are very low on sulfur, PVC has the chloride which will eat the metals of your system.
There were still volatiles in the demo, normally they would be aired out before use or captured in a finer, secondary process.

Man, you know what my dream game is? A voxel game that has physics and chemistry. Nearly a replica of our world in terms of dynamics and function, just without the worst part which would be permanent death and long term effects. So animals "evolve" to get their attributes and you can truly interact with the world. Though I don't know how the walking and hand/arm movement would be properly made (so that you can actually do complex stuff and the environment does stuff to you). Realistic science would take a dump on everything you do as well as the environment and animals (and robots)

I wish someone would take this operation on a grand scale such as on a barge that would travel world wide cleaning up the ocean and getting a fuel source to run the ship and some to sell. No telling how far this could go.

If I wasn't a worn out old man I would be doing many things now. Living off grid, inventing an electric car that will charge the batteries from the wheels turning, finding a way to use old tires as a road base, etc. But you only have so many beats in a heart and mine are coming to and end.So, you try to put your ideas out there and hope one comes true.

You obviously don't know what a perpetual motion machine is. He is providing the heat and the plastic. All he is doing is removing stored energy from the plastic. As soon as the fire goes out or he stops putting in plastic the process stops. Nothing perpetual about it.
This is basically reversing the process of how plastic is made in the first place. Plastic comes from oil.

Yes, you can do it. We can't. for an advanced civilization such as ours you need farming on a large scale, mining on a large scale, drilling, lumbering etc. etc. A large civilization can not sustain itself for too long. Humans in a large civilization are going extinct but those who can live a self sufficient life style will not.
I'm 62, live in the Dallas, Texas area, and found myself living "off grid" this past week, but not intentionally! Due to the big ice storm and failure of the power grid, we had no electricity, no internet and many people had no running water. Lots of people were sleeping in their cars to keep warm, It was difficult to find a gas station that had fuel and the electricity to pump it. Fortunately, I was way more prepared than most, but still looking for better ways of doing things. This process of making fuel from plastic trash is intriguing, and I will be looking into it. I'm also thinking of building a simple diesel motor from melted aluminum cans.... It would be pretty cool to build a diesel generator and make my own fuel from trash....

The system provides the plastic and demand for his coconut stuff doesnt it? There is a division of labor even on this island. Machines were built by someone else, the iron was once smelted etc.
@Thomas Lucas There are no cars here so there are no roads, only footpaths. The restaurants for the most part are on the other side of the island. Not too many people live out where we live.

I had a chemistry teacher telling us how his bike ran out of fuel and stating he's a chemist, he solves problems... so he turn plastic into fuel and made enough fuel to drive to the next gast station. This was back in the 90s. Shout out to Mr. Gilmore.

@@EgoBruiser well for a start he is self sufficient for the most part , and also removing masses of plastic that washes up on the beach and making use of it for a good purpose , , as for using machinery , i bet your not against the the massive tech and machinery industry that allows you to voice your opinion on the device and infrastructure you are now using and live your daily life , and i would also suggest the minimal amount of tech and machinery and resources this gentleman uses is probably a drop in the bucket to what 99.9 percent of what we wasteful average consumers use in the big smoke .

Irony being that no one really wants to discuss the amount of non-renewable resource consumption and pollution causing technology that went in to getting this guy started and even keeping it maintained. Let's take a look at the amount of trees he cutdown (or took from the soil) just to grow his garden, to burn fuel (wood) in order to make more refined fuel so that he can run his fancy modern gadgets, like television, wifi, youtube, ice cream maker, etc.
Let's try to imagine the fuel/resource consumption that goes into tourist like you going to visit, because after all, that is what this guy wants and needs to keep the "dream alive".
Then let's calculate all the people who he's "inspiring" to do the same, and try to surmise how long these wild "virgin" islands will actually remain wild, and how long before there is eventually smog, a walmart and pharmacy on each one offering "free" vaccinations to all the inhabitants and their chickens etc.
Sadly these "green peace" hippies who jet set around the globe looking for unadulterated places to set up their "off grid" society and shops are often killing our planet as fast or faster then the people who live in the cities. At least the city folk all learn how to live in small spaces, and the energy they consume actually comes to them much more efficiently than most of these "pioneers" who use massive amounts of resources in order for them to have some of the same luxuries.

The diesel engine was originally designed to run on peanut oil. Beware burning plastic creates carcinogenic dioxins.
Oil/green energy does not want you to know or attempt to distill and crack your own hydrocarbons, hell alcohol as a fuel has a giant racket built around it but it’s green!

Sure he reduced the microplastics in the sea. But he takes carbon from solid form and turning it into a gas. That is one of our current problems with global warming.
Would be better off making that plastic into a polymer nature can break down, and not making a solid into gas. But you would not get energy then. Better to get some extra panels in that case.

Awesome job, folks! For others reading these comments, they are not burning the plastic, they are heating (distilling) it until the molecular chains start coming apart changing it back to a form of petroleum oil. The temperature of the inside of the container regulates what type of fuel and other byproducts are produced. This is way cleaner than the plastic pollution of the earth. I believe it gives of little or no CO2 and even if it did, most plants need CO2 to live and give off oxygen.
Thanks a lot for watching and for making this point clear to the people who are being critical. The worst part is that people on the island even burn plastic to get rid of it! Which is far worse in my opinion

For those that are interested in trying this process for themselves there is a very good thread at Energetic Forums. It's been around for a few year and is VERY helpful. Start from the beginning, the thread evolves as people experiment and learn. And be careful, use pipes of at least an inch in diameter, no leaks, and if you are not using an inert gas like nitrogen to displace the oxygen inside the reactor, start with a lower fire gradually making it hotter so the oxygen inside is pushed out by the gasses released from the melting plastics before it reaches a critical temperature. It doesn't take too long. And use a bubbler, when it bubbles you know it is working and it keeps oxygen from being drawn back into the system. There should not be much pressure in the system, it is an easy flow. Have fun! :-)

@@ati573 Yeah, seems risky. The fuel is going to contain all the worst chemicals from the plastics. And then burning that fuel in a engine, where it's not getting completely combusted is going to create some really toxic fumes.

@@grimfpv292 I think you're right that it produces some bad chemicals as a side effect, but when you consider the bad effects they are offsetting by taking plastics out of the ocean and not burning commercially produced fuel, it's likely a net benefit to the environment. Commercial fuel is very dirty and energy consuming to extract, refine and deliver. Now I think if people in a high density city tried to do this at home, then local air pollution would be a more concerning issue. Hopefully the jungle and the sunlight break down most, if not all of the harmful emissions of this small operation. I do think that it will be creative people like this who eventually help to solve our waste and energy production problems through simple inventions.

I completely agree with everything that you’re doing I admire so much being able to reuse what actually is not waste. Here’s where the cynic in me comes out and lays the foundation of truth. This method and way of life does not support today’s level of consumerism. The saddest part about being a human in this day and age is it has become acceptable to turn your back on mother nature and to not have any accountability for what someone leaves behind.
I feel that it is the speed of information that has quicken the pace of the personal interaction which has detached the synapse of connection with what is acceptable on a social basis, but what actually is unacceptable on a planetary understanding.
Everybody knows that we’re better than this but nobody wants to take the time to do the things that need to be done.
I recycle when I can I reuse so many things whenever given the chance and over the past three years I’ve been retaining plastic bottles and containers that I know I can put back in the use for holding things like hardware such as screws or bolts. Water bottles that were used once I fill them back up and stick them in the basement so if there’s an outage I have water.
I think the western part of the world has become arrogant and ask as if they don’t need to care about resourcing and repurposing things because we have enough financial ability to not have to do that well regardless of if you can buy it it should be your responsibility to not be so gluttonous and deceitful against the planet. There’s no doubt in my mind that collectively we will force this planet to turn on us in order for it to save itself it will find away to kill a great majority of the humans on this planet but it seems that this wouldn’t be certainly the first time that the earth has cleansed itself of the parasites that have an inability to control the carbon atom.
I test anyone of you reading my post to go to your local landfill take one single bag of trash or even just tell them that you wanna drive in and look around and see how you feel about being a human to me it’s disgusting and it’s saddening that just because we pay money to put our trash in bags and then those bags go into a container that it’s OK to just have that truck which picks up the bags drop it in a field which is piling up on top of itself and then mixed with dirt so that they can bury your food Reminence and tons of waste.
This brings up the point of how it is important to try and donate things if given the opportunity.
It’s always seemed interesting to me, actually more hilarious that we would not like to give away things of value to strangers and that we would expect some thing as far as a monetary compensation for the things that we’re not using right. But then when we aren’t able to sell the items we refer to directly disposing of them in the trash and this whole concept is mine boggling to me if you’re actually not going to be able to get anything of it but it actually may have value and usefulness to somebody else why not just give it away.
See the first exhibit spoken about earlier where humans suck.

I think the last thing I’d like to mention is that I don’t think that everybody’s in capable of acting or participating in the necessity for resource management considering reclamation but most humans will not do anything unless forced to do so out of necessity. Simply enough we are pampered spoiled filth here in North America and I don’t wish harm on anyone but if an EMP blast came through and took out a large majority of the computer electronics or there was a malfunction amongst cell phone towers and the Wi-Fi capability it would become incredibly evident very quickly that we have become a culture dependent on the ability to look up some thing instantaneously but have no ability to retain the information that’s been given to us because there’s no experience attached to the information. I’m not saying that all people are idiots but there’s a vast majority out there that will not be able to function when shit hits the fan.

He's distilling diesel and runs a generator to supplement his chinese made solar panels to run his laptop or whatever - All he's opted out of is paying bills. And he's achieving that by running an unlicenced, un-controlled mini oil refinery.

Nothing much wrong with burning dead wood but a solar array to heat it is a great idea. We have those solar systems that would work out in the desert on I15 near the Nevada border just before you get to Prim Nevada.
Except they need to burn the wood for the ash so they can make the soap, it’s all cycle
Apart from the amount of energy per 2m from the sun is not enough to do what you’re suggesting.
If that doesn't work and people have issues with wood, some use heating elements run by generators fueled by the product produced. They say 10 percent is used by the machine, the 90 percent put aside for later use.
