- Clonmacnoise is located 15 to 17 miles south of the Town of Athlone on the banks of the river Shannon, the longest river in Ireland. It's a monastic site founded by in 546 by ST Ciaran, a young man from Rathcroghan , Co. Roscommon. Until the 9th century it had close associations with the Kings of Connacht. The strategic location of the monastery helped it become a major centre of religion, learning, craftmanship, and trade.
