It was Mister Rogers, Captain Kangaroo, Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and 321 Contact for MANY an afternoon in North Carolina... I had 5 channel of PBS at my disposal...Thanks for posting this :)

    One of the best intros for any show ever. The whole thing is a celebration of the actors' most memorable characters, with each one seeing them then turning into 'themselves' and saying hello to the kids. Brilliant way to end the shows run.

    My generation's kids' shows seemed to have themes based on the idea that "kids don't know anything about music... just throw something together". Barney anyone? Because Electric Company was well before my time, I'm hearing this song as an adult, and STILL think it's great. Sounds like something from the musical "Hair". More importantly, it sounds like someone cared enough about his audience to write 'em a great song and not feel like he was "wasting" his material on young ears. I love this.

    • @radiorob7543
      @radiorob7543 9 лет назад +8

      +Ruby Doomsday TV shows during this era put a lot of effort into their theme music. I was around during this time, and music was BIG business, and extremely popular.

    • @tideoftime
      @tideoftime 9 лет назад +6

      +Ruby Doomsday I grew up in the 70's/80's, and songs for kids' shows from the late 60's thru the late 70's *did* have a lot more effort/talent put into them. The Electric Company was just one example; most all of the music/songs for School House Rock were *awesome*, and even semi-imports like The Bugaloos (via SId and Marty Krofft) still counted because they played as much to a US audience as to the British (and they had legit-awesome music). EC was the *shit* when I was little in the 70s -- all of my friends and I loved it.

    • @raggedyanarchist
      @raggedyanarchist 9 лет назад +3

      +tideoftime That's so cool. I will look into your other mentions! I've actually been really interested in this very topic just lately. Aside from just EC, all the Children's Television Workshop programs seem to have had top notch music direction back in the day. 321 Contact had probably my favorite theme of the lot, and Sesame Street under Joe Raposo's music direction... seriously, there are songs on Sesame Street about what sound N makes that are more musically literate than much of what's played on the radio nowadays. It's really fascinating.

    • @raggedyanarchist
      @raggedyanarchist 9 лет назад +4

      +Radio Rob It's a shame. Theme songs really do seem to be fast of their way to becoming a lost art form.

    • @radiorob7543
      @radiorob7543 8 лет назад +1

      As you know, The Osmond's played & possibly wrote the music for a few the Krofft shows. I love the music to Lost Saucer. I also own a couple Kaptain Kool & the Kongs radios, even though I don't necessarily totally dig the music. Nobody's mentioned "Hot Fudge". Probably because it wasn't as good as the previously mentioned.

    What a blast from my childhood! Looking at it now, it's amazing how much they invested in casting great stage and character actors (Freeman, Moreno, Cosby and others). And that it was important for the show to express they were just oridnary people playing roles, "make believe" for our entertainment and benefit. They did a great thing by this show. And letting each actor showcase their skills was awesome too. I'm SO glad I came across this. Never quite realized how much influence it had on me.

    I have The Electric Company on DVD at home, both The Best of the Best of The Electric Company, The Best of The Electric Company, and The Best of The Electric Company: Volume 2. I didn’t grow up in the 70s, but my mother got the DVDs for me when I was six or seven years old, and I fell in love with them. Every once in a while, I’ll take them out and watch them on my laptop. My favorite catchphrase is “HEY YOU GUYS!!!!” That was a great show and me and my mother would watch it a lot when I first got the DVDs. It helped me improve my reading and phonics skills, I got better with learning my punctuation with the song “Punctuation”, and so much more. I never had trouble with reading, but I needed a bit of a boost of energy, besides a reading log where I was required to read a book for 20 minutes.

      I hate to sound like an old fart here, but something has bothered me for a while... even the most rough comparison of theme songs of childrens' shows from back then with the ones of the present day shows a striking devolution of form and complexity.
      This is not meant as a condemnation of musical pieces which consist of one chord from beginning to end (Remain In Light was a pop-trance masterpiece IMO), but really, how come nearly every kids' show consists of one chord now?
      Do the current crop of youngsters not deserve better? Hell, this was public television, for crying out loud. The bar was already set low, and yet they made this, I'm guessing for very little money as well.
      I could be missing something, so could anyone please show me any current work on par with this theme song so I can reverse my opinion concerning the apparent downfall of Western artistry?

      J Williams that's because PBS made an agreement with CTW to show the last two seasons(1975-77)from 1977-85.Hopefully that'll clear up any confusion.

    Breaking this down. I think the show was about Crank. The cop is investigating, the drug cartel is in Africa, unfortunately Morgan F was hooked and looking for it in a denim suit, the cops lab was analyzing evidence (no computer labs back then) they advertise for Crank with another meth head who is having visions, they show next that kids can get addicted to to also, they go to the Dr who makes the Crank, and finally they show their end game with everyone on Crank including Spider-man. The End.

    I just had such a mad rush of visual memories from when I was 2-5 years old!!!
    I remember thinking how cool it was that the 'people were walking right at me'...3D-style. My eyes had never seen anything like that...it was like watching the Ice Capades for the 1st time. Such radiant colors, spectacular visuals and sounds you've never seen and heard before. It was magical. If I could relive my childhood again...

    This is the closest thing to a time machine. Wow, just wow. Haven't seen this since I was 4 or 5. I can't even remember it was so long. I wish I could transfer my mind into my 4 year old body and relive my life from 4 to 16 again and really appreciate what a special time the 70-80s were. Such a great decade in American history. People who haven't lived it have no idea how great it was. It was the pinnacle of American culture. Nearly every pop culture reference was created in the 80s including the MCU, DCEU, Star Wars, etc.
