So was Reinhard Heydrich, looked upon as the natural successor to Hitler. He was too good at his job orchestrating the 'Final Solution' which is why he was assassinated while Hitler was kept alive.
More like "Seriously?" Kind of amazed. Like he said in the previous scene, he still sees the whole way things seemed to be turning out as too good to be true. He's still not buying it and alert for any changes while Landa is completely confident in that the Allies will keep their word about the deal.
So, wait a second. Was Landa planning on double-crossing the Germans from the beginning or did he just change his mind towards the end because he knew the Allies were going to win anyway?
He went to the winner team. If Germans were going to win, he wouldn't swap team. But as he said (and as happened irl), Hitler was taking terrible decisions by this point.
I think he was making it up as he went along. He was a fast thinker and as soon as he sniffed them out at the reception he made the mental calculation on the spot that it would be very easy for him to either foil their plot or to ensure its success, and that with the Nazis losing the war he personally had more to gain from the latter than from the former. He probably decided that before he murdered Bridget Von Hammersmark, and definitely before he had Raine and Utivich arrested. I have zero doubt that if they and the general had refused to deal with him he'd have called the theater and exposed the plot, lying and saying he only just learned of it by interrogating Raine.
1:04 probably the exact moment Aldo decided he was definitely going to carve a swastika into this guy's head, no matter what the consequences for doing so might be.
"Bring them straight to me for debriefing". I would actually like to see that conversation between the two men, being that General Donovan was the head of the predecessor of the CIA and Landa was an intelligence officer for the Third Reich. No doubt Donovan's staff would have gotten a lot of intelligence value out of their defector.
So much this. Was coming here to say the same. Quentin is such a movie buff and history buff and writes beautiful dislike that is so deep and meaningful to the characters with so many layers that delivers deep into the characters motives and drive yet over looks this. I see it in so many movies and shows… over literally means you are requesting a reply where out means conversation is over… the two can not stand together
Àngel Fenollar Its extortion The man is holding all the cards and is dictating the price for throwing the game. A negotiation is when both sides come to terms with one another. Hans is strong arming everyone and the only one to benefit from it is Hans.
+Scoonertuna lol that's ridiculous. They're toppling the third Reich and with it being the victor of world war 2. What greater benefit can one possible have that that? How is Hans the only one to benefit? How many Allied, civilian as well as Axis lives will be saved from prematurely ending the war in this way? Why do you think America bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it was seen as a "necessary evil", a means an end". Lots of people will disagree with it and say it's not the "done thing" but after it was seen how many souls were lost in operation overlord in France. They didn't want a repeat. So how many lives were saved from not having an allied invasion of Japan? A means to an end..
JoshD1001 The man is strong arming everyone and bending them to his will. Toppling the Third Reich is solely his chip to benefit himself. Pure and simple. He sees an opportunity to benefit himself and, along with it, get everyone’s hands dirty with compromise and deception. Perhaps, this was his ultimate act of cruelty. Hans is the only one who benefits from this because he can always put his evil deeds behind him. Also, this is a piece of fiction. He prematurely ended the war in a fictitious sense. The war did not end this way, no matter what nitpickers, conspiracy theorists, etc. Say. Do not compare fictitious events to actual events. This is a movie. Aldo and his companion hate the deal because they are compromising themselves and making a deal with a Nazi, a hated Nazi, who is walking away "squeaky clean". Hans thinks he knows how the world works and always stakes the decks in his favor. Aldo proves to him that, no matter how much in control you think you are, in the end you cannot cover everything.
this reminds me many bittersweet historical truth. actually so many warcriminals moved their origin to america or russia by the name of strategical cooperation. and they are living in new home with rich and honour. of course japan is worse at this.
Yeah, but they get their come up-pence. They got to have a legacy and we just tore it down and built the whole legacy. If I was at the doorway to hell, I would say to them "thanks for the rockets and such, but...you're going to hell and people will see why." Then just kick them into the devil's hold, as the truth is revealed.
I just had the idea that Landa's life after the war would make a great sequel for Inglorious Basterds. The plot would focus on his life in (Nantucket?) maybe 18 years or so after the war ended (so 1962 or 63). He might appear to just be a rich, quirky old recluse (with an unsightly scar on his forehead) living a monotonous existence until....someone from his Nazi past shows up to blackmail or taunt him. Maybe even have a tie in with the plot to assassinate Kennedy? The big question (to be answered at the end) might be: did Landa truly repent or is he still his old evil self? Maybe it is too late for this? But maybe not. Hopefully QT will read this and be inspired.
The American government and Allies would want to know everything Landa knows. Hence why he is not killed by Brad Pitt or anyone else. Easier to throw him a reward and then have him share his entire knowledge and experience.
Yeah, Raine knew exactly what he could and couldn't get away with. Nobody was going to care that he shot a worthless corporal or tortured an SS colonel and war criminal, but they'd be furious if he killed such a valuable intelligence asset before they could interrogate him. It's pretty clear that Raine would have preferred to kill Landa deal or no deal, but he wasn't going to ruin his own life to do it.
I feel the US high command would find landa far too useful to let anything really bad happen, i like to imagine he kept on working for US military catching any runaways of the Reich.
Because he was under the assumption that the US government was as authoritarian as Nazi Germany's was. That's also why when Aldo breaks the deal and shoots Herman, he immediately says that Aldo "will be shot for this", because, in Nazi Germany, if you disobey orders, you die
Firstly, Landa is the type to hold a lot of weight on the value of deals. He probably left the French farmers from the beginning alone, and is clearly distraught when Hermann is killed by Aldo in the finale. Secondly, Landa made the mistake of thinking Aldo saw him as an equal, with their various subordinates basically being pawns. Aldo just saw Landa as a Nazi who was valuable, but still just a Nazi who was just as deserving of a swastika carved onto his forehead. And another reason why Landa failed to anticipate Hermann being shot and getting a branded with swastika is that he doesn’t plan ahead. As an opportunist, he is concerned with his immediate well-being instead of his long term one. Sure, his demands could’ve been thought up after some time, but he never thought to plan his demands very carefully, down to every minute instance and detail. For the situation with Aldo, the other mistakes I previously mentioned play into why his escape from Germany with his radio operator, Aldo, and Utivich goes awry.
@@machirim2805 i beg to differ, Landa didn't anticipate Hermann getting killed and him getting a swatiska,. Because the Nazi chain of command is very strict, a soldier must obey a superior or else he subjects himself fo death, hence why Landa says to Aldo "you're gonna get shot dead" also Landa is a perfectionist he plans and anticipate every detail, he already knew the 3 Italians were basterd since he picked up the actress highheels at the tavern + because they were expensive and not many people could afford those , he knew mishammemarks was a traitor and the italians were spies, he just wanted to catch her in the act of lying to satisfy his ego. He could have slaughtered both mishammermark and the 3 italians but since he knew the 3rd reich was coming to an end he chose to use them as an escape from nuremberg trial + possible torture or execution.
If you're referring to all the awards on his uniform, that's simply due to it being a formal occasion, thereby requiring full dress uniform with all awards. A normal duty uniform would not have displayed all his awards like that. And if you think his uniform's something, check out some Soviet Generals and Marshals. They'd make Landa's uniform look like Amateur Night at the Gulag. 😆
I think that the island of Nantucket was chosen specifically because it is located in almost the same climatic zone as Austria. It is quite possible that Landa chose him so as not to have problems with maladaptation.
There's really nothing stopping the guy on the other end of the line agreeing to whatever nonsense Landa says and as soon as he's talking to Raine saying "god does he ever shut up. Okay. As soon as he surrenders his gun, shoot the bastard with it." In fact, given the potential embarassment the US government could face in future if it ever came out who Landa really was and how pampered he was being by them, leaving his corpse in the woods would seem like a far preferable option.
When he said Nantucket Island, I immediately knew it's gonna be some fancy ass place in New England. Landa sure knows his stuff. Hell I wanna live there!
"By the way that last part is actually true!" Lmfao! Best movie dialogue writing I have heard in the past 10 years... Holy fuck, the people who wrote this movie/Quentin were just brilliant! Edit: And Christoph's/Han's decision to include the Americans in the part of the deal where they were to receive the Medal Of Honor was just fantastic! Haha, even though Christoph's character is just pure evil and one of the most sinister villains of 21'st century cinema, you really can't hate him with an actor of this quality playing him... I mean Christoph plays one of the most fucking evil and horrifyingly driven Nazi's that I have ever seen in film besides Ralph/Voldemort in Schindler's List, but he brings such a charming aspect to the character that I am left shaking my head at my feelings towards the actual character. In my opinion, this is one of the best villains/anti-heros/supporting acting performances in the history of film. I mean, it takes fucking talent to take on the role of a Nazi who is known for his skill in finding and killing Jews, and play him in a realistically ruthless way while also delivering some of the best black humor/character redemption traits I have ever seen in film. This movie would have just fallen apart without Christoph... Hell, Christoph single handedly carried this movie and stole the scene in every single moment he was involved in. I know Christoph was a well known actor before this, but mainly to European/German/Foreign audiences that America and the rest of the world would have never been aware of. But Quentin found him and instantly realized that this was the actor that was going to single handedly carry this movie and make it as stunning as it was, and had the faith in him to give him not only a leading role, but one of the best written and powerful antagonist's roles of all time just shows why Quentin is as good as a director as he is. He instantly recognized how talented Christoph was and gave him his shot of a lifetime... And hey, he did 2 movies with Tarantino with him featured in a major role, and he upstaged both of the leading actors and was awarded an Oscar for both his supporting roles. Quentin literally struck pure gold when he decided to bring Christoph to Hollywood. I'm just so glad that an actor of this quality was given a real chance to shine in hardball (hollywood) and give a performance like this. I know my fellow American's will probably shit on me for this, but Christoph is my favorite actor. Watching this movie in theaters was almost an out of body experience with how well written and acted this film was. I remember literally sitting there in my seat on the opening night on the verge of tears, and actually shaking with the power of the first scene with the farmer hiding jews under his floor. I have never seen an acting performance like Christoph did in my fucking life... And then 20 minutes later, he drops the "and a glass of milk" line on the female Jew who escaped. I mean seriously guys, this was one of the two movies I have seen in my fucking life that actually made me sick to my stomach from pure dread .This is one of them, the Crawl Space scene from Breaking Bad is up there too. Fantastic movie!
He wasn't but he is very smart and opportunistic. Saw an opportunity here and took it. Still, put himself at pretty good risk, though. Nothing really guaranteed him the Allies would keep their word for a deal spoken through a radio. In that situation anyone would agree to anything with the stakes being that high. We never really find out but assuming they gave him everything he asked for he was extremely lucky the only negative thing he got was Aldo's swastika carved on his forehead.
Ironic Landa thought he had control of the situation, but he screwed himself over by placing the Bomb underneath hitlers chair, and Aldos real plan coming together.
I imagine around the 60s when plastic surgery is more widespread Hans would probably get a knock on the door of his house on Nantucket Island only to see Aldo and Udavitch standing at his front door with knives.
I want to see a movie of how history of this night played out via Han’s involvement and regarding his life after the war and how he is perceived by historians and the public in general.
I meaaaaan-on a podcast in 2020, Tarantino said that he lived out his life on Nantucket Island where he had a good career as a master detective. He just had to grow out bangs to hide the swastika. His demands were met and he was wrote as a spy for the Allies and a hero.

Oh my god, you can see how pissed Aldo was :))
More like "Seriously?" Kind of amazed. Like he said in the previous scene, he still sees the whole way things seemed to be turning out as too good to be true. He's still not buying it and alert for any changes while Landa is completely confident in that the Allies will keep their word about the deal.
It amuses me that Quentin Terrentino wanted a series where Hans Landa is working as a private detective in Nantucket.
So, wait a second. Was Landa planning on double-crossing the Germans from the beginning or did he just change his mind towards the end because he knew the Allies were going to win anyway?
He knew germans Lost and crossed them
Oh pure opportunism.
He went to the winner team. If Germans were going to win, he wouldn't swap team.
But as he said (and as happened irl), Hitler was taking terrible decisions by this point.
what are you guys talking about? He was involved in Operation Kino from the beginning. he was always a double agent, the history books confirmed it
I think he was making it up as he went along.
1:38 Private Utivich enjoying his glass of fine wine while history is being made around him. Priceless :D
1:04 probably the exact moment Aldo decided he was definitely going to carve a swastika into this guy's head, no matter what the consequences for doing so might be.
I’ve watched this scene a thousand times and never noticed Utivich is drinking the wine now that he’s uncuffed

JoshD1001
The man is strong arming everyone and bending them to his will.

As evil and messed up as he was, that actually was a good deal to make on both sides.
How can such an evil man be so likable?
1:03 :: No need to thank me, guys. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sir, this is a Wendy’s.
That's nice for him for looking out for Little Man by giving a medal of honor
Lmao @ Landa responding, “yes sir, I look forward to meeting you face-to-face too,” having no idea what OSS meant by that!

Utivich drinking wine served by the enemy like he's at home lol
I feel the US high command would find landa far too useful to let anything really bad happen,
i like to imagine he kept on working for US military catching any runaways of the Reich.
I never understood how Landa was so sure they would fulfill their part of the deal and not just kill him after all was over.
exactly, this is the weakest part of the stotry
Because he was under the assumption that the US government was as authoritarian as Nazi Germany's was. That's also why when Aldo breaks the deal and shoots Herman, he immediately says that Aldo "will be shot for this", because, in Nazi Germany, if you disobey orders, you die
@@aceven2raa Even then that's no excuse for surrendering to the Basterds, whose behaviour is basically US-approved war crimes.

Does anyone else thinks Hans Landa loves medals and decorations???
If you're referring to all the awards on his uniform, that's simply due to it being a formal occasion, thereby requiring full dress uniform with all awards. A normal duty uniform would not have displayed all his awards like that.
And if you think his uniform's something, check out some Soviet Generals and Marshals. They'd make Landa's uniform look like Amateur Night at the Gulag. 😆
Also, the congressional Medal of Honor comes with a lot of benefits with it besides just being a very prestigious decoration.
I think that the island of Nantucket was chosen specifically because it is located in almost the same climatic zone as Austria. It is quite possible that Landa chose him so as not to have problems with maladaptation.
If he'd just said "i am to be transported safely and come to no harm under the pain of death", landa wouldve gotten everything he wanted.
It didn't need to be said. In real life, aldo & udovich would be executed for killing the radio operator & maiming landa.

He knows it's nothing for the US government compared to leting hitler die, and saving them a shit ton of money.
Guy ended the war he saved more life's than any one from allies side could ever imagine
There's really nothing stopping the guy on the other end of the line agreeing to whatever nonsense Landa says and as soon as he's talking to Raine saying "god does he ever shut up. Okay. As soon as he surrenders his gun, shoot the bastard with it."
In fact, given the potential embarassment the US government could face in future if it ever came out who Landa really was and how pampered he was being by them, leaving his corpse in the woods would seem like a far preferable option.

"By the way that last part is actually true!"
Lmfao!
