Thierry Escaich, c'es ENORME ce que vous faites là ! Vous adapter instantanément à 4 compositeurs différents, c'est votre métier d'organiste... Mais improviser comme vous le faites, avec une pleine maîtrise des possibilités de ce GO illustre de St Sulpice, et avec l'aide de vos assistants tireurs de jeu, et bien, c'est inimaginable ! Merci à vous, que j'ai découvert il y a 6-8 ans en pleine montagne, lors d'un concert Radio Classique ou Fr Musique : j'ai arrété le ùmoteur le temps de vous écouter 30' ou 60', je ne sais plus ...

I think I liked Escaich's improvisation the best out of all that. He got sounds and chords out of that instrument I never heard before.
I'm fairly certain I actually heard the Septieme 2 2/7' used in there somewhere....
Even though I have a good idea how that sound was produced (and there are few organs you can produce it on because who else has a Septieme), the complete wonder and awe I was in hearing it was in no wise diminished. (Is that an unwitting pun?)

WOW. This is astonishing.
Fantastic performance. I am a big fan of the music of Thierry Escaich (I was introduced to his music by Olivier Latry at the inauguration of the new organ in St John's Cathedral, Napier, NZ), however this recital also graphically displays Escaich's virtuoso abilities as a player.
The second theme of the improvisation is in fact the opening fugue subject of Puccini's Madama Butterfly.

I like how the announcer said Sophie was to Thierry's left, but in fact she's on his right side lol... it's stage left, not his left.
And you have to look backwards to even get that perspective, since the console is to the rear of the place. She's not just on his right, she's on the Cathedral's right, too lol

Bonjour, je me demandais d'où la prise de son avait été effectuée pour la vidéo. J'ai assisté au concert dans l'église le jour J et je trouve que le son est en fait bien meilleur et agréable à écouter sur youtube ! (y a-t-il d'ailleurs un endroit meilleur que d'autres pour se placer dans l'église pour l'acoustique ?)

Pourquoi demander à un compositeur eminamant talentueux dont a envie d'entendre les œuvres d'interpréter les pièces de compositeurs mineurs dont on a souvenir qu'ils aient de surcroît remplacé un compositeur interprète génial toujours créatif malgré son grand âge..je parle de maître Guillou.
Un salut très cordial à Thierry Escaich qui était à Roquevaire l'an dernier et nous a donné un concert "Trompette et Orgue" mémorable.
Are the assistants who pull or shut the stops every mentioned in these and other organ concerts?
On another note, I was fortunate to listen to the l'orgue du St. Sulpice many times when I was conducting research in Paris in 1973-74 as a graduate student. I also grew up in a home with a medium sized Moller pipe organ.

As one who myself played the Elgar Sonata (it was my calling card back in the 1980s), I was disappointed by this performance. First of all, the Saint-Sulpice organ, great as it is, is not the instrument for it. I did not get the sense that M. Escaich really understands the music. It was rushed breathlessly, and the outer movements were chopped to bits. It must be given the chance it needs to let the air and the sunlight in; when this is done, it bursts with joy from first measure to last. Sadly, this performance did not. The unreleased recording by the late and still very much lamented John Scott at St. Paul's in London is the ne plus ultra; it literally brings tears to my eyes. Anyone who wants to play this piece needs to listen to that.
Herbert Sumsion’s version also comes to mind as a reference, even though it’s older and the organ wasn’t quite as impressive.

il devrait aller chez le coiffeur et son interprétation générale est comparable à de la bouillie!!
