Fair play - he earned his chocolate cake today! That's a heck of a load of weeds there and the rubbish on top of that is appalling - shows that more people need to be more responsible. Glad the engine held up and you both had a good time.

The lightning strike situation is interesting. On a yacht (with a tall mast of course), you unplug any electrical equipment on the mast and that's about it. Likewise, probably a good idea to unplug any electrical devices. The same as aircraft, a lightning bolt would behave in the Faraday Cage effect and use the boat hull as the route to ground. Provided you are not touching metal in this circuit, you would be fine. So go inside, sit within the false floor and walls of your boat and let the lightning pass. If it's a real worry, put a conducting rod at the highest point of the boat with the other end routed away down the side and into the water. If you are unlucky enough to be struck, find the burn and perhaps have the hull inspected for micro leaks. Generally, don't worry as storms are comparatively rare in the UK (how many a year do you experience) and within those storms, a strike would also be rare.

It's not surprising that there is so much crap in the canal when you've got people hanging clothes over the water, like at 6:15, with not a clothes peg in sight! A gust of wind, or movement from a passing boat, and something is going to go in the water to wrap around someones prop.

Had no idea the eastern edge of London might be considered part of Essex!
And of course even less idea the instant you "crossed" into Essex the weed became "no good" 🤔
As far as boaters are concerned "all" weed is "no good" 😱.
But far, far worse are the scratchy thorns and brambles, which seem to grow exclusively opposite the entrance to a marina.
      I hate canal side greenery.
I hate ducks who shite on marina fingers 24/7 too.

I feel like trying to run a canal boat at night would be like trying to do a military convoy at night during black out conditions. Instead of tail lights / brake lights that can be seen from the air you have these pair of little dimly glowing triangles in a shrouded fixture that brighten ever so slightly when the brakes are applied. The trick to the system is if you can see both triangles clearly instead of some vague little blob of light you are too close. Only problem is the longer you are straining your eyes at night the closer and closer you have to be to see the triangles and the less you are focusing on actually steering the vehicle. You almost need to have a second person in the cab solely focusing on those lights telling you when to slow down and when to brake hard while you are focusing on the rest of the vehicle in front of you to know when to turn.
Anyway that’s what’s comes to my mind when the subject is moving along the canal at night.

Hmm, your comment ref new batteries holding their charge.
Presuming the batteries are lead acid and presuming the digital volts read out is accurate then 12.5V, dropping to 12.2V seems a tad low.
If, rpt if the batteries were being charged I would have expected around 14.4V, dropping to a steady 13.7V.
Fwiw, ref lead acid cells, 12.5V is perhaps 85% charge; 12.2V is only 50% charge.
If batteries drop to the nominal 12.0V then battery is at just 25% charge. If they you drop to 11.7V then battery is flat.
Fortunately, presuming you have decent lead acid deep cycle batteries, even 12.2V is not a battery killer, but, you wouldn't want them dropping that low on a regular basis.
(Lithium cells behave slightly differently but if they are lithiums be aware of the issues of recharging them at low temperatures. Below 0C they won't be happy with more than a few milliamps, rpt milliamps of charging current. It can be very expensive charging lithiums at too high a current at 0C and below.
There are ways around the perils of charging very cold lithiums but involves heating mats, say, and control circuitry, in addition to the inbuilt battery management systems.
Plenty of info online if arsed.)
It may be the boat's 12V wiring, in particular the charging circuit, requires attention as in checking all connections, especially the battery terminals.
If they appear tight them perhaps checking the alternator drive belt(s) tension.
And, once you have worked your way through that lot, a check on the alternator output might be prudent.
