There cannot be an alternative to Esplanade considering the location. If it shifts, Government may need to think zone wise. For South - Khidderpore Howrah - Santragachhi East - Karunamoyee (existing) North - Belghoriya Bus terminal (existing).
There should be Multiple Bus Terminuses. Few existing ones can be renovated to accommodate more. E.g Ultadanga, Garia, Saltlake We can Utilize the Tram Depots. We can have designated Bus stands for different locations. Another area is Hastings below Hoogly Bridge connecting flyovers.

Dankuni is the ideal alternative to Esplanade bus stand. Land close to Dankuni station can potentially have space for proper bus stand with bus bays, restaurants, shops and toilets. Moreover it is meeting point for NH 16, NH 19 and NH 34. Busses from North, South and entire Bengal including neighboring states can terminate here. Even bus from Bangladesh can take NH 34 and terminate here. In future Dakhineshwar metro line can be extended to Dankuni station and bus travelers can board metro to any part of Kolkata including Airport, local trains to Howrah and Sealdah station. By moving bus stand to Dankuni the traffic load can be reduced from both Kona and Belghoria Expressway as well. Dankuni has the potential to be ideal transit hub and free up properties of NBSTC and SBSTC in prime locations within the city for real estate development to generate revenue.
Solid info but decision to move the terminus to either Santragachi or Khidderpore isn't a good one. Both locations are far away from city center and shall be a headache to commuters. And as far as pollution is concerned there are more serious concerns than this, for example the dumpyard near Dunlop and Dhapa, the age old buses and taxis plying on road.

So now someone who is targeted to reach Kolkata directly via SBSTC bus is supposed to get down at Santragachi, waste valuable time to make a new effort to reach Kolkata. I think Bus terminus shoulb be split up in number of locations for East, West, North & South directions. This is much much feasible in terms of service segment and minimum land acquisition, for West Bengal which is a vital issue.

But I hardly believe that the verdict will be adhered by the concerned authority. Good initiative but the thing is that Santragachi is not well connected with allover Kolkata. Neither have good suburban connection nor metro. Will be painful for Greater Kolkata people.

I have been reading something or the other about this for a looong time... still not completed yet. Anyways, better late than never. Also not only Esplanade, the Babughat bus stand should also be shifted someplace else. There is an existing bus station in Karunamoyee Salt Lake, not sure why they didn't shift the terminus there? Although not as big as Esplanade, its not short of space. Scenic places like Babughat or the Maidan should be kept pristine for the benefit as well as the image of the whole city.

I feel like for Howrah metropolitan and central Kolkata Santragachhi is perfect, Garia/Baruipur should serve for South Kolkata and Salt Lake/Newtown for north Kolkata and it's suburbs

I have been reading something or the other about this for a looong time... still not completed yet. Anyways, better late than never. Also not only Esplanade, the Babughat bus stand should also be shifted someplace else. There is an existing bus station in Karunamoyee Salt Lake, not sure why they didn't shift the terminus there? Although not as big as Esplanade, its not short of space. Scenic places like Babughat or the Maidan should be kept pristine for the benefit as well as the image of the whole city.
