A Brief History of the Hokitika and Westland District, Hokitika Museum

This is a video produced by the Hokitika Museum (circa 1990) for use in their Audio Visual room. While somewhat dated, it still provides a good overview of the social history of the Westland Province - from the early days of Maori habitation, the pounamu trade, the arrival of early explorers and settlers, the gold rush of the 1860's, through to the development of urban centers, transportation, and communications infrastructure, as well as taking a look at the economy of the region today.
