My 2011 Hulux had a leaking water pump when I bought it 2 years ago with 136,000 kms. The car had evidence of sporadic services but I’d say that the coolant changes were not done when due and that they didn’t use genuine coolant. Fixed with a 2-piece pump BFE kit from Anthony in 2022. Just changed the coolant after 2yrs. Genuine coolant only since the BFE kit.
My 2008 lux started misting/leaving a pink dusting on the timing belt cover at 4.5 years/90,000 kms. By 107,000 kms it was time, so I replaced everything at the front. Was disappointed with myself I didn't claim it through warranty as there was a small opportunity I could have but didn't. 11 years, Showing 215,000 kms later it's never leaked a drop, but now it's time to do it all again. I'm a retired mechanic and I would never use anything but genuine parts 👍
Hi Anthony, can you get an FJ Cruiser up on the hoist for a comparison with a Prado? Maybe get FJ owners to comment on any issues they have that are FJ specific….. I notice their kerb weight is lighter than a Prado. Also who are the biggest Prado 120/150 wreckers up and down the east coast? Cheers, keep up the good work!
Many toyota pumps from the 80`s lasted minimum of 150,000km . Then came the 90`s w/pumps lasted less time on average . These examples were petrols . A 2H factory turbo [Sahara ?] 370,000km still going with factory coolant ,, w/p and hoses . Last time I saw this was in the early 2000`s .
As usual Anthony, I had it done by another person and after 250k it started leaking since they didn’t actually do the water pump, you were able to fix it and I know it’s done right this time
@@14frankro our 2007 1KD lasted to last year (cracked piston) on original pump @ 367K klms. Interesting that both the 1KZ & 1KD were both made that year. Even though the 1KZ was pre combustion instead of direct injection I think they were more reliable. Sure less powerful and less fuel efficient, but nothing wrong with old tech-at least it lasts. Still believe T product good overall, they just dropped the ball a couple of times (cracked piston, DPF, timing guides and chains). Cheers
@@HML-it7tehere in Costa Rica the 120 Prado (from 2003 to 2009) only came with the 1KZ. We started to see the 1KD in 2005 only in the Hilux and first gen Fortuner, later it came in the 150 Prado from 2010, but in the euro 2 spec without EGR. The 1KD lasted until 2020 in the 150 Prado. The 1GD came in the 2017 in the Hilux and second gen Fortuner, later it came in the 150 Prado from 2021, but in the euro 4 spec with no DPF from factory. Toyota discontinues engines in first world countries but keep manufacturing and sending them to developing countries, with less stricter emission specs. I agree with you that the 1KZ is and old-tech engine, but it's very reliable and the parts are unbeatably cheaper, the only thing to be careful is with the cooling system that a failure can cause a cracked head. In our case, the 1GD has turned out to be a reliable engine, but unlike you we get a much simplier version with no DPF.
Yes even though the 1KZ cracked heads like no other engine it’s still much more reliable than the 1KD. I’ve heard of 1KZ heads cracking without the temperature gauge moving past half way. Is there any 1KZ engines out there with the original head left ?
@@ramkissoongangabissoon131 IDK for sure about your issue, but have picked up timing guides and chain seem to be an issue and could be your problem. Hope you’ve got some cash stashed as I hear it’s not cheap to fix. I’d get it looked at asap, just so it doesn’t let you down at the worst possible moment, like my cracked piston did. Still smarting over that.
So so many issues with Toyota diesel engines Me Mitsubishi Pajero has original everything including water pump and over 500,000km and last 100,000km has been highly modified running 32psi daily and still never burnt a drop of oil. Mitsubishi 4M41 engine is invincible and far superior to any Toyota diesel engine especially the fragile 1KD engine
Yes very fragile, even more fragile than a Nissan ZD30 engine I know three people that have cracked pistons in their 1Kd two from just towing and one was just going up a hill and we all know you can’t modify these engines otherwise cracked piston and $14k repair bill all because of a piston design fault. My father has a early 1KD Prado and although he hasn’t cracked a piston he’s spent $6k on replacing injectors and seals and says it needs done every 120,000km and he won’t tow his caravan for fear of cracking a piston and tows it with mums little Peugot diesel car instead. His mechanic told him not to get a Toyota diesel and to buy a Pajero and he regrets not taking his advice. No other diesel engine is as fragile as the early 1KD i mean even a ZD30 can be modified So so fragile I’ve sen the video with the 44gallon drum full of 1KD cracked pistons.
Changed on a 1KD at 450000 km as preventative maintenance. Wasn't leaking but has done its job.

Not as bad as a 2.7 petrol hilux once a water pump goes and you dont notice it quickly the head cracks almost instantly.
