Cave Johnson was so well written and well done that when I saw that there was a t-shirt with the lemon rant on it at a convention years ago, it was an immediately purchase. All-time great character.
Bowsette not only isn't in any game, her existence isn't even canon, but was everywhere on the internet a few years ago.
Nintendo actually created her before the fans did, but was cut from the final product in Mario Odyssey.
"The beloved Siegmeyer" and the video proceeds showing Patches dressed with Catarina's armor!😂
Honourable mention is Sparda from Devil May Cry. That man is heavily referenced throughout the series as this legendary dark knight that slayed demons before his sons, Dante and Vergil.
Wasn't Sparda playable in the first game in the Dark Knight game mode? Granted it was more of a reskin of Dante with a dark knight theme and limited you to only using the Sparda sword and energy blasts for ranged attacks and you had to finish the game in Dante Must Die difficulty to unlock it
@@mercurioslevin1877 my bro, u just answered ur question.
Wasn't Sparda one of the skins for Dante?
@@mercurioslevin1877 I don't recall having to beat a hard difficulty to unlock it. I think this was in the third game.
@@zachtwilightwindwaker596 It was just a skin it's not actually Sparda himself. We only saw what he was wearing and hasn't seen him in full action yet.
The narrator for Baldur’s Gate 3. She made my Dark Urge playthrough so very awesome.😂
Admiral Hackett in Mass Effect 1 and 2's base game. Helps that he's voiced by Lance Henriksen
Hackett out.
Somehow, Delilah never made the list.
RIGHT-O. One of the best off screen characters ever imo.
I mean I loved her until the ending 😅
They could be waiting until a commenters edition.
@@stug5041 I still see her as a friend of Henry's anyway.
Firewatch?
Cave Johnson definitely deserves #1! Best disembodied voice ever!
You do see Atlas in the game "Bioshock", before the bathysphere explosion.
I was gonna say this. Whatculture has got to brush up on their game facts
Fara Phoenix from the 1992 Star Fox comics. She’s only appeared in the comics where she was Fox McCloud’s love interest. She could’ve easily appeared in the first Star Fox game in 1993, flying with the team, BUT, Nintendo removed her from the game.
I’d see to see her, Fay, and Miyu in a new Star Fox game, along with Krystal, but the chances we’ll get another game, let alone see any of them in it, is slim to none
I really wish they would give studio that made Zero another chance, that game would had been great if it was not for that horrid control set up. I just could not get it to work for me.
@@Lynxan I'd rather see Platinum ( yes that IS the development studio behind that god awful Star Fox Zero ) take on another Nintendo IP like Mysterious Murasame Castle or Mach Rider or reviving the cancelled Wii game Project H.A.M.M.E.R. and maybe give Ubisoft's StarLink team a go at a full on Star Fox game...totally with you on those controls too, my autistic ass couldn't do it either
@@newageBoundhippie
That could work too, the main thing is there are options out there, it should not be dead .
I would give an honorable mention to the narrator from Thomas Was Alone. He manages to give personality and soul to a bunch of rectangles.
2:50 You sir have cheated and deceived us. You can clearly see Alfred here 🤣
"Frank funtain you no what I'm saying ", excuse me what did you say.
You should have had Pariah from the Prototype franchise. You never see him (aside from one maybe two photos of him as a child) but he is implied to be the most powerful being in the game's universe.
5:30 Miss Pauling makes several voiced appearances in TF2, she is voiced by Ashly Burch, Anthony Burch's sister. She has more than 100+ voiced lines in TF2 at the time of this video's publishing.
She does? When did that start happening? I don't recall anything.
@@HitchcockJohnall of her voice lines are in relation to the contracts that you can complete
@@ThePageofVoid I think I might be seriously out of touch with TF2 content. I didn't realize contracts had become a thing.
The original Bioshock has a lot of these types of characters. Another big one is Tenenbaum, whose appearances were mostly limited to either being a voice on the radio or pre-recorded messages. There was also Suchong, who pops up a lot in recordings unless you count being able to find his corpse. Even Steinman was hidden behind a mask and horribly mutated by the time you meet him.
Interestingly, there was actually a practical reason for this. The developers didn't have the budget to make unique character models for everyone so they had to get creative with how to put them in the game. Even the two characters that actually have models- Sander Cohen and Andrew Ryan, are built up heavily through voice-over before you get to see them. Just about every other character who "appears" in the game is played by a retextured splicer model in a context where they aren't clearly visible, such as from a distance or obscured by something.
They follow a similar pattern in Bioshock 2 with Sinclair, who also spends most of the game as a voice on the radio, barring the one moment he decides to look you in the eye and the big dramatic confrontation at the end. There's also a weird case with the Minerva's Den DLC where it seems like this is happening Charles Milton Porter, only to reveal you've been playing as him the whole time.
This wasn't as much the case for Bioshock Infinite, but even that one did seem to be selective in how often certain characters appeared. They carefully build up Comstock as a dangerous man who has the city under his control and you're made to constantly feel his presence, but he doesn't actually appear in person much. Most of the time, Comstock's presence is felt through his propaganda. You hear his sermons and see his face plastered everywhere, but there are very few direct interactions. Fink, arguably, got a similar treatment, although you do see him slightly more often.
Miss Pauling is voiced in game, she talks to the player when you take on contracts
It's also worth noting that "Tomoe" is likely either a reference to or is outright meant to be Tomoe Gozen, who was a real person and a rare female Samurai (an "Onna-Bugeisha"). She also appears in Fate Grand Order, and she is also the inspiration for Chie's initial Persona, also named "Tomoe", in Persona 4. She's also referenced in Tsukimichi/Moonlit Fantasy when Makoto gives his dragon companion the name Tomoe and explicitly remarks that Tomoe was a famous female samurai from his world (something that results in said companion loving the name).
Haven’t seen you in ages, Jules! So happy to see you again ❤ love your commentaries 😊
Jules is the best of all the presenters!
He was made a producer for FGS recently so he might be too busy to present for WhatCulture sometimes.
Doug Rattman (Portal) his writing is tucked away, but except for a comic book, we never see him.
Can't believe that Fallout New Vegas's Desert Ranger wasn't included in the list. He's a big reason why Honest Hearts was such an impactful DLC. And I've not met anyone that finished his quest that didn't admire him.
This was exactly where my mind went, honestly. The whole story of his coming to the valley and what he managed there. Easily some of the best and most cohesive environmental storytelling in the Fallout universe.
Randall Clark?
Also, shout out to Undertale’s W.D. Gaster, one of the biggest characters to fans, but very little is known about him. It’s technically never even confirmed the commonly accepted “Gaster Design” is Gaster. That character is only known as Mystery Man.
Here’s all we actually know about Gaster
He was the previous Royal scientist before Alphys
He fell into his own creation
He has a tie to fun values, aka timelines
There is also a high chance that most people don’t remember Gaster as he was wiped from memory. This idea I don’t believe is ever confirmed, but lines up with “Goner Kid’s” quote about a world that functions perfectly without you, but you never existed.
Lastly, he speaks in Wing Dings and is likely tied with the determination experiments in the True Lab.
That’s it. That’s all we know. Anything about Sans and Gaster is pure speculation.
Wasn't "Atlas" visible through a window while the submarine was being destroyed?
Where is Jules' usual sign-off?
😢
I miss it.
it's not algorithm friendly as viewer retention is king and once the outtro starts most people click away before the video is actually over.
Me too😞
Uh, I'm not sure if this is a valid argument, but you do actually see Atlas in Bioshock before the spoiler stuff. In the Smuggler's cove, you open a door for him to get into the Sub Bay and can clearly see him, he even acknowledges you by asking if your alright since the lights in your room went out, before working to get the door in your room open.
I would say they did royal scientist of the underground dirty, but him not being included in a way makes it amusingly fitting.
I have one that would have worked. Aiden from The Witcher 3:wild Hunt. In the side quest Following the thread, where players as Geralt team up with fellow witcher Lambert to help Lambert get revenge for the death of his friend Aiden. Never at one point in the game do you actually get to meet Aiden, as he is already dead; there's not even a lot known about his personality. That does not stop Aiden from being an popular character, with Aiden and Lambert being one of the most popular ships from the series
Captain Flameheart in Sea of thieves is a good one, he is always spoken about but never actually makes a proper appearance at least until season 13 of the game comes out, but before that he was only mentioned by name and was seen only as a talking ghost head and a giant shadow casting on the wall from is sarcophagus
I would add Joseph Schrieber from SH4: The Room to this list. While at the end of Act Two (Spoiler Alert) an avatar for him appears telling Henry what needs to be done to save Eileen and stop the evil of the titular Room 302, you never really get to meet him in the flesh.
This is doubly the case in SH3 where he first makes an appearance as part of a series of journalistic articles, especially in Brookhaven mental hospital.
Other SH characters which are famous for being just ethereal mascots are Robbie The Rabbit from SH3 and SH5, and a certain nurse whose controversially sounding name shall not be uttered here.
To the list, I would also like to include Captain Baseballbat Boy from Max Payne 1 and 2; and Lazlow from GTA 3, VC, SA and GTA 4.
Cave Johnson was the girst character that came to mind when i read the title
I finished Portal 2 and don't remember any Cave Johnson. The Narrator is a much better pick, Jules is right, The Stanley Parable is nothing without him.
@@jiblitin1520 He was 1 of only 4 voiced characters. How could you not remember him?
I was honestly expecting Sauron to make this list...
God I so wanted, and still have lingering hope, to face Lady Tomoe in Sekiro DLC or eventually in a sequel
Charlie from Don't Starve (Together) :)
Cave Johnson is my spirit animal
For me I like MAI from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. I find her silly a lot of the times.
Personally, I’d have gone with Ishmael from The Last of Us. Totally get why you picked Frank but Ishmael’s story was just so compelling.
L'analisi più lucida di sempre.
I just knew Cave Johnson would be #1, lol
I'd love a video about games that changed minds about a genre. I know a lot of people changed their mind about turn-based strategy with Mario+rabbids kingdom battle.
Number 5... I've been playing that game for years and have never heard of her lol
10 most/(more) beloved side characters in video games (than the MC). All of video game history or a genre.
Funnily enough, you do get to meet Cave Johnson in the Steam Deck tech demo Aperture Desk Job.
I won’t say anymore than that, let’s just say meeting him fixes a small plothole in Portal 2.
English Narrator of Dynasty Warriors not DW9 ... such an epic voice.
does randall clarke count? hes never met but we do see his skeleton.
Pretty sure it would count. Without the diary entries he would just be another skeleton in the waste. And not even a fun "environmental storytelling" skeleton.
0:37 saying "siegmeyer from dark souls 1" while showing patches revealing he disguised himself as siegward in dark souls 3... i hope that was just some kind of joke...
Take the lemons
Doing a list without including Arkham.
WhatCulture: “Impossible.”
Gaster is a good one
What, no love for Mike the helicopter pilot from RE4?
Or Alice from Genshin Impact? She's basically Genshin's version of Charlie from Charlie's Angels. She only ever speaks through letters and vinyl records but a lot of the game's plot revolves around her.
I wouldn't say Genshin's plot revolves around Alice. She's only gotten a few mentions in side content.
Honorable mention for Tali in mass effect.
Yeah, you technically see her for the most part so I think she’s not qualified for the list but she never see her face properly except in that lame still photograph
Yet many fans of the series absolutely fell in love with her
Are you saying that you didn't? Huh, weird.
Stanley Parable only has 2 characters, Stanley and the Narrator? What about the Bucket?
You do se William afton. You se him as spring trap in fnaf , as scrap trap in fnaf 6, you play as him in ultemet custom nigth, he migth have appered in fnaf vr as glitch trap (theres a lot of debate about what glitch trap is) and in fnaf sucurety breach as burn trap.
The recent FNAF Security Breach Ruin DLC puts into question if William Afton was really Glitchtrap and Burntrap, as it is implied that The Mimic is both Glitchtrap and Burntrap. But yeah, William Afton is seen. So he shouldn’t be on this list, but then every character on the list shouldn’t be on the list as these are all characters you see.
Expiration Date mentioned :D
Chester Bless - Control, Alan Wake 2...
How about all the friends Ellis talks about in Left 4 Dead 2?
Would have figured Gordan Freeman would be on here. If all you ever did was play Half-life 1 & 2 and had never seen the box art, would you even know what he looks like? I don't recall ever seeing his actual face in those games.
I was expecting to Undertale’s W.D. Gaster on the list here. I was very surprised he wasn’t, given how popular of a character he is despite having yet to appear in either Undertale or Deltarune.
Yeah but maybe whatculture thinks he isn't a Canon character or they consider the mystery man encounter enough reason to not include him
Im sure mudcrab merchant counts probably
What about PP Trader from fake Minecraft speedruns?
Joel “The game master” Helldivers 2
Karl in Deep Rock Galactic! ROCK AND STONE!
No outro?
In last of us you do see frank he is just dead but i think ish is a better character for this list
Does Rusty V. IV count? Seen his "car" but him..?
What about Vault Boy from Fallout?
Pickle pea IS the nest😮!
No Echo 419 from Halo CE?
No Foe Hammer from Halo:CE?!!
Woooow…
Surprise Gaster wasn't mention, the Undertale and Deltarune fandoms are obcese whit him despite not having a confirm psical apearence and only one paragraph of dialog that is confirm to come from him.
Jules, where the hell is Nancy Drew??
Gavin?
Dark soul 3
Goes looking for Pickle P fanart,
Mostly, if not only, found Crow Girls.
Well that's my canon appearance of her now.
The Voice of the Agency (Crackdown) should have been on the list!
Your "Siegmeyer of Catarina" of Dark Souls 1 is Patches wearing Siegward of Catarina's armour in Dark Souls 3. You somehow got three things wrong in one statement, which is actually kinda impressive.
They also didnt mention that pickle pee is first encountered in dark souls 1
Mr. New Vegas from, well, yea
Snake in MGS2? 😂🤣
also master chief from halo
Rare and valuable as opposed to rare and worthless :'D
Aw, no Karl from Deep Rock?
Apparently Pickle Pee in an anime harpy girl.
3:46 Yeah, mostly by MatPat which is really annoying. Can't he ignore that game for one second?
Cave Johnson does sound like guy in Spiderman.
Cave Johnson
Also, Rattmann
So no Mr. New Vegas?
Who would play Sekiro if it dropped DLC with Tomoe in it!?
This was the first time I've ever heard of the lady from TF2.
Miss Pauling you mean?
@@C_rrptd Yes, that was it! Sorry, her name slipped out of my memory pretty quickly. I blame my adhd.
So Frank is an old man snake??
*pickle pee AND pump-a-rum and that’s not looks like Patches tricked you in this video too
Lol the entirety of final fantasy 15s cast ... The movie ff15 kings glaive had a cast of memorable characters only for you to play in the game as the generation after they died.
Now I've noticed it and can't stop hearing it. Whoever is writing these is shoving "titular" into every single whatculture video I've seen. Guys, there are other words, titular isn't as funny as you think it is.
I liked Bill but I really didn't care about Frank in the Last of us game and I didn't like either of them in the show.
I would have put Ish from the game on this list instead
I know a very popular character who really doesn't have not much lore behind it other than what a character said about him in a riddle form which was beware the man who speaks in hands aka W.d gaster from undertale and deltarune
Frank? Most legendary last of us character that we never see is "Ish", from the sewers stage! :p
In Dark Souls and Dark Souls III the name of the crow is SNUGGLY. "Pickle-pee" is something it says when you interact with it in DS3 ("Pickle-pee. Pump-a-rum."). And you also have trading crows in Dark Souls II (Dyna and Tillo), as well as in Demon's Souls (Sparkly). Have you actually played the games? Why mention only the one in DS3?
As to Tomoe in Sekiro, I wouldn't call her so much a character *IN* the game, so much as a character of the lore, because she's NOT IN the game itself --- there are several of those characters in the Souls series too, like the Furtive Pygmy in DS1, for example. Can we actually consider them characters if they're not even there? I mean, the crows in the Souls games at least interact with you, even if you can't see them.
Amazed you have no characters from Doom, Elder Scrolls, Pokemon, Dead Space, Zelda, or Metroid on this list... Ash Ketchum isn't really in any mainline game for example, Metroid has a bunch of side lore we never see, ES/Doom have a bunch of recordings/books bout characters dead and/or zombified before we ever get there, heck unless ESO had a few we only have ever seen like 1-5 Dwarves in the entire series EVER and people love the Dwemer.
Ish would have been a better character for The Last of Us.
Please, put some friggin audio in these. If you're gonna comment on a voice, or the sound something makes, at least give us an example. It's not hard, and totally within YT ad permissions. Otherwise, why bother?
No.
No, when I think portal 2 J.K Simmons Voice IS NOT the first voice I think of... at all. Hes third. Glados is second. First? That Traitorous Ball of Campy Accents that just NEVER Shut up
You all know who I'm talking about.
Suprised the narrator from Baldur's Gate 3 didn't make this list... or is she technicaly not a character
What about Gavin?! He’s my friend and I can’t seem to find him. Hope he’s alright … GAVIN!
Title: Characters that you *NEVER* see
Video: Contains several characters that we actually do see and are even shown in the video
Classic WC bullshit, someone needs to tell them what "never" means.
Their whole entire channel is bullcrap. And I’ve got some examples of their bullcrap. First example, Jess. She claims she does her own research, but I don’t buy that excuse as she got ALL of the backstory of Kirby and the Forgotten Land wrong, even saying that Kirby fans theorized that the humans from the Forgotten Land moved to Kirby’s home world and became Waddle Dees, when Kirby fans really theorized is that they moved to Halcandra and became the Ancients, and Jess claiming that the humans moved to Dreamland, Kirby’s home world, was due to a bad coincidence on the part of the North American localization because Leongar’s land of dreams line is in all versions of Kirby and the Forgotten Land while Kirby’s home world is called Dreamland in North America but not in other regions. Then there is the time where she WILLINGLY said that Zelda fans were confused about the Zelda franchise’s 3 timelines all because of Hyrule Historia, when Hyrule Historia HELPED Zelda fans better understand the Zelda franchise’s 3 timelines and the thing Zelda fans are confused about is where BOTW and TOTK take place. Then there is Jules Gill, where he has multiple not so smart moments. First, he claims that Pokemon Legends Arceus is a spin-off game. Despite Legends Arceus being made by a different Pokemon team, Legends Arceus is a MAINLINE entry! Then he said that every Sonic game after Sonic 06 is bad. Jules should really know that Sonic Generations, a Sonic game that was released AFTER Sonic 06 is loved by both old AND new Sonic fans and is seen as one of the best Sonic games. And Jules claims he’s a Sonic fan. Then there is Psy White. He claims to be a Resident Evil expert, but he said that Osmund Saddler, the main villain of RE4, not releasing Ashley Graham when she just got infected with Las Plagas is a plot hole, when everyone who has played RE4 KNOWS this isn’t a plot hole. So What Culture Gaming’s whole entire channel is comprised of bullcrap and it infuriates me as a game that they are willingly calling gamers like myself stupid for understanding our favorite games.
