I’m a combat medic and I commonly use this for gaining “access” to a patients vascular system to give medications and blood in order for me to save their lives. It’s always preached to attempt an IV first but most times we jump to an IO in order to gain access in a more rapid fashion. How far inferior to the acromion is needed to avoid drilling through the supraspinatus tendon.

The delivery of medications, fluids and blood products in both adult and paediatric patients.
The IO is used to give fluids or medication when you can not get peripheral IV access. It's basically a needle in the bone
