Great rant and you are so right. The stupidity about all of this is that some these old songs will get completely forgotten about. Even a 30 seconds run may inspire someone to buy the album or audio track.
Exactly. RUclips is a joke. They could have told you that the video had copyrighted material on it as you are uploading it. Not wait until it's finished uploading and then goes public just so that they can put a copyright notification on it when people click to watch it. That could be embarrassing. And these companies are not actually putting claims on the videos, it's a computer algorithm that can sense copyrighted material. Which means that they can most certainly tell you before it's fully uploaded if it's going to be rejected or not.
Great Video. We tape recorder restorers run into the same Content ID situation a lot too. RUclips made a deal with certain record companies that dictates how their Content ID works. They are actually in violation of the spirit of copyright law because they do not allow for Fair Use. But companies like WMG don't care. The ironic thing is that WMG probably didn't produce or have anything to do with the original pressing, and they may not even be selling anything that has the song on it. They may just have bought the rights to the song, buried it anyway, yet that is enough for them to cry foul! It's a really corrupt system. The systerm needs a major overhaul, but it is doubtful that it will ever happen. The ones who suffer most are the audience who are trying to learn. You spend a lot of time explaining things, and then cannot prove what you have taught. Still, you do a good job.
+clydesight That's a good point. I don't know what the limitations of "fair use" are but I know it applies to parodies, critiques, and educational videos. Both radiotvphononut and your own videos certainly fit into the educational category. I know many younger people these days disregard the older technologies, but it's nice to know there are people out there with the knowledge to fix these appliances.
+ldchappell1 Thanks for your reply. Yep, it's all about the education. There are so many people out there who are hungry to know, to learn about the wonders of electronics, going back to the basics. We try to fill that need where we can with what we have. I've learned a few tricks from radiotvphononut, and his videos are usually not only instructive, but sometimes entertaining as well, especially when he goes on a rant! Keep on watching!
When that Soul Finger single was released, the Volt label, a division of Stax in Memphis, was being processed and distributed by Atlantic Record Corporation, which, in 1965, was a completely independent stand-alone company. Now if you REALLY want to see a greedy pack of bastards in the music industry, look no further than MCA, now branding themselves Universal and gobbling up every record company they can get their grubby paws on....TRULY OBSCENE INDEED!
Phononut, I have never fixed any phonograph, ever. Radios, TVs, Tape Players, sure. I have learned a lot from you fixing record players. This is a great thing you do here. I hope you keep it up for a long time to come. As for WMG, damn those guys need to lighten up a little. I don't guess if you put a disclaimer that you are using the material for teaching purposes at the beginning of the video it would make any difference. Love the vids,
Interesting video as usual! Neat idea using a decade box to test if gain was improved on the amp. "Soul finger" is a great song and i do enjoy your music selections. Maybe WMG would be happier hearing "Surfin' Bird" lol You are like the Dukes of hazzard "makin your way the only way you know how,but thats just a little bit more than the law will allow" All the best radiotvphpnonut!
I love your videos! I have a question though: Are you collecting all these antiques or repairing them for other people? If all this is in your personal collection I'd love to stroll through your house! BTW: Check your speed with a stroboscope- it sounds like it's running a little fast to me.
I appreciate your videos, and I believe that people that share my interest know that you are only using music selections for demonstration purposes , but unfortunately there aren't real filters that can't block true offenders from people that are considerate enough to share their knowledge about these vintage electronics in which you do. Thanks for being careful and keep up the videos.
5 minutes in, good to see that RCA was using its proper trademark(in the lid of the player), the circular logo with the lightning off the letter 'A'. The "Nipper"(Dog & Gramophone) trademark belongs to EMI in Britain. Only Capitol, as EMI's US subsidiary, should be using the "His Master's Voice" name and Nipper trademark in the USA and Canada.
Dear WMG: I have bought CD's and Vinyl records based on samples on RUclips videos. But if you don't wish to get my money from newly discovered gems, I guess that's your deal.
I never knew RCA made school record players.....interesting. Does that Rubber Renew stuff really work on idler wheels where the old rubber has hardened?
I bet if they didn't block it, there would have been people out there that saw your vid, heard the song, liked it, and bought that song from a music service. ;-)
Nice rant on the WMG scandal. I would be very careful if UMG owns all of the entire Disney music library including the Disneyland Records and Buena Vista ones including Annette Funicello, it might be UMG, for example "Tall Paul", that might be a good song, but UMG owns the song and blocked in Germany only, not in the US, except here which might be a big problem. UMG owns all of the Disney movie soundtracks including "Cinderella", the animated version from 1950, but I saw the live action one with Lilly James about two weeks ago. Just to be sure that UMG controls the Disney music including movie soundtracks and theme park music such as music from Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Be very careful if UMG will claim any Disney music, it will be blocked or ends up with a copyright strike.
Thanks for the video! With the small sound clips that you use, you'd think that the companies that own the music would like people to use their music. Someone might like the little clips that you play and would purchase the entire song. Dumb companies!
Hey buddy I love what do you channel Also I love the don't buy a crossly video I've I've bought 7 of them with mixed results I just got a more expensive one with the audio technical cartridge it's a trade it's still cheap but better the joke about the Chinese super glue was a little sick tick but I understand anyway God-bless
you see loads of music videos on youtube. and you can download the audio content. or the video on to your computer to use with no wifi .and then tranfer on to a usb thumb drive. some dj cd players have a usb port to play mp3 music files . and the music police dont bat an eyelid.
you sound like you're complaining that WMG came after you personally. That's not, technically, what happened. The copyright process is fully automatic, as there's simply no way their staff could go through every single uploaded video to dig through those who use music for fair uses (such as yourself) and those who upload music to youtube to be copied. That's just the way it is. It doesn't matter that your upload was low-fi. It doesn't matter that you only played 45 seconds. Because their system can't take that into account. Great video though.
The biggest laugh is, on iTunes you can get a minute and a half's preview of each song LOL, and they don't complain about that despite people don't always buy the song or album, they're window shopping.
Figures that the one country blocked was the U.S. and that WMG and UMG would even bother blocking the video because you had a couple seconds of music playing through a lo-fi record player. I am sick of BS like this. Great video though!
For the best way to pick music on Vinyl is to chose a single that is off the music charts. There are a few lables that just have songs that hit the charts but are cheap rip off of a pop song. One example is a "HIT record" lable and some "Patrick 33" LP records. Heck, I have a good country song played on my Rock-ola GP160 when I was showing off a good cheap cartridge for a tube amp and no WMG jumping on it.
My guess is that the publisher has the 'A' side in circulation (Bar-Kay's Greatest His cd's, compilations, etc.) while they failed to release the 'B' side (typical). How dare you play it - they make that call:) If any interest in the 'B' side developed as a result of your first video, they ought to be paying YOU for promoting it. They are still licking their wounds from the Napster/Limewire days. As always - enjoy your videos.
Sounds like computer Generated crap no different when shango066 account was tagged you said allow back we are entitle to Our freedom of speech and what we post on Facebook and youtube and your video about they take this copy right stuff to serious your right Brian it's not your fault... That record player looks very similar to the ones I remember in the California pubic school system in the 1960s. Chances are the owners of the "supposed" copyright aren't even aware of your video. RUclips uses an automated recognition system that's overly cautious and not accurate many times. Appealing it does no good because they'll just stick by their original decision. There was a case where some guy uploaded a video of himself picking mushrooms or something in the woods. There wasn't even any music. He also got a message from RUclips saying he was using copyright material. It turns out that the birds chirping in the woods activated the copyright mechanism and it belonged to some rock group. Even after the guy appealed and told them to watch his video they stuck by their decision. The decision wasn't overturned until he contacted the group himself and had them watch his video.
They ought to be as aggressive with Google taking pictures of your house with their self driving car and posting it on the internet for realtors to hound you to sell your house. Since Google runs you tube they are kind of one sided not protecting the individual's privacy rights.
I'm beginning to think that if a song or instrumental track is 50 years old, or older, then the record companies, music publishing houses, public performance clearance houses(like ASCAP, BMI and SESAC in America, CAPAC in Canada, NCB in Britain, APRA and AMCO here in Australia and others elsewhere) have made more than ample money off the back of the piece, then they should relinquish their claims and let the piece go into Public Domain where it can be used freely by anyone for any purpose EXCEPT IN ADVERTISING! NO MUSIC SHOULD BE TARNISHED BY USE IN STUPID COMMERCIALS!!!
What about those channels that play full songs in HD stereo, with ads, and they get millions of views. These people have hundreds of videos of music that came out in the 80s and 90s. RUclips has double standards. If you are a small channel, they'll delete your videos for any complaints, but if you're a youtube partner, you can upload misleading videos, copyrighted materials, or anything as long as youtube is making ad revenue.
I know I loose sleep at night due to worries that Warner Music Group will go bankrupt due to the horrible abuse of their copyrighted material that is so old, Noah was rockin' out to those tunes on the ark. Greedy bastages!
RCA must have really been in a state of decline by the time that they built this record player! Using only the two potentiometer nuts to hold the amplifier chassis seems pretty cheesy to me. On top of that, they decided to take the opportunity to use up their inventory of obsolete wax and bumblebee capacitors.
People actually sell dead bumble bombs on eBay? For what?! Shame about getting your hand slapped by WMG, I'd hate for you to go through the same headache Shango066 had to.
wmg is afraid of people like me that download the 50+ year old music, acoustically recorded mono sound fragments, low bit rate mp3 format, from these videos onto my phone, instead of downloading studio quality copies from them. just kidding.
