Seriously...i have xbox one , ps4,PC,Nintendo Wii-U and a whole bunch of super duper games with millions of polygons but..nothing can stop this weird feeling in my stomach when i remember seeing and playing this games for the first time...BRING BACK MY YOUTH. Thanks a lot DOS Nostalgia
The year I was introduced to PC gaming, ahh. So many happy memories here, including my first game: Crystal Caves!
I played Secret Agent, before Crystal Caves - both only Episode 1 out of the 3 episodes made for each game.
Loved them. Those, and Commander Keen, I played A LOT ...
Guess what: same here, they were shareware. But then I found out that somehow, through quite obscure means, it was still possible to purchase the full games! So I have played all episodes now.
This was probably the year I was introduced to PC gaming as well, we must be around the same age I've always figured, 31 for me. I remember in 90 or 91 my mom's awesome boyfriend at the time (who she made the mistake of not marrying) was the one who always convinced my mom or talked her into them buying a PC and all the latest game consoles, and we had A LOT of consoles and games for PC. Leisure Suit Larry 1 the VGA remake was one game we owned I remember watching him play but certain parts I had to leave the room for lol, also Wolfenstein 3d of course.. many other games.
STOP HAUNTING ME IN THE COMMENTS OF EVERY VIDEO THAT I WATCH!!!
I had memories of which I did not know if they were true or imagination. So I was searching for DOS-games a really long time until I finally found crystal caves. I just then realized the memories were real and I did not dream or imagine things. Such a great feeling.
I just came across this channel because of my love for the old DOS games. I've played a lot of the games you posted here but I would like to mention a few more that were some of my favorites. Jazz the Jackrabbit, Jill of the Jungle, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Llamatron, and don't forget about Full Throttle, Under A Killing Moon, Rex Nebular and Dark Seed. I am now setting up a new (OLD) system, and will be revisiting these old DOS games again.
I was born in 87 and these games brought back some lost memories of playing these at my relatives house as a young kid. probably didnt know what i was doing back then anyway.
Great vid as always!! thumbs up
the same
@@steelapplepipeapfel995 Wow, someone replied to a comment I posted 5 years ago. Dont even remember posting it.
These videos are great, I get to relive my childhood in 100 5 second clips at a time.
2021 and I still love them.
I love that parody of the Accolade logo. That logo was on so many games I grew up with.
What a great collection! But what I enjoyed most, that you show different aspects of the game. Thank you for your effort
I think we live in the best era to be playing old dos games :D.
Great video, Anatoly. I see a lot of effort went into this. Thank you!
Paint, frogger and commander keen were my best friends back then 🥲 god sometimes I miss those days....
Commnder Keen soo many happy childhood memorys : )
Hell yeah! It's so awesome to see another one of these DOS compilations.
It's always amazing to me to see the vast difference in graphic quality and style. Even over the course of a year for the same company. Good work on the video!
I remember deciphering the alien language in Commander Keen and feeling so proud.
Wing Commander. Fond memories. The sound and graphics was groundbreaking back then.
Interesting how after seeing this video, I'm concentrating on and seeing the pixels of a modern computer. Looking back I think those big pixels, trying to represent something with a few of those blocks, had a certain charm to it.
Less graphical fidelity leaves more to the imagination. And our mind can sometimes do a better job than an artist. Not to mention that some things look less interesting the more detail you give them. Like the monsters in DOOM vs DOOM 2016.
Your selection and presentation are awesome! Really enjoy your vids. Jättebra!
The pixel art in the 16 bit era (Amiga, Sega MD, MS-DOS) was terrific.
MS-DOS post-1993 games were mostly 32-bit
@@sassymenses but MS-DOS itself was still a 16-bit operating system. For me the real 32-bit era started with Windows 95 and early 3d games.
@@spearPYN but Windows 95 was based on 16-bit MS-DOS...
The hardware platform was 32-bit anyway since i386 :)
@@sassymenses yes but can you talk about 32-bit era in 1985 when i386 was introduced. Motorola 68000 also had a 32-bit instruction set, but can you also tell it was a fully 32-bit processor belonging to 32-bit era?
For me there are three main eras: 8-bit (early home computers), 16-bit (amiga, atari st, pc dos) and 32-bit (windows era). I know I am simplifying here...
@@spearPYN ok I got your point clearly. But still I definitely see a straight separation between "classic" 16-bit DOS games and 32-bit DOS/4GW / CWSDPMI games. Dont forget that there were a lot of games for DOS after Win95 release, meant to be executed under Win95 DOS-Box (just cuz DirectX aka GameSDK was not so popular/trustworthy). F.e. MDK. DOS MDK doesn't really look like a typical 16-bit game, does it?..
Isn't it amazing how DIFFERENT these games are? In both their visual style and gameplay. It doesn't seem like Street Rod 2 and Monuments of Mars should be from the same year as say Police Quest 3 and Another World. What a time to be alive.
Jamie Can i play dos game Wolfenstein in VR ?
Street Rod 2 uses EGA graphics and Monuments of Mars has the even more outdated CGA. Most games were now using VGA in '91 since by then VGA was now standard and mainstream. At this point most games using older graphics formats in 1991 were companies on a low budget or those experimenting with Adaptive Tile Refresh such as Id Software, in the case of the Commander Keen series and Duke Nukem, a trick not available on VGA, meaning that company continued using EGA as late as 1993 with Dangerous Dave's Risky Rescue. I'm not entirely clear why Monuments of Mars is CGA but apparently you can't run the game on a 5150. Crosscountry Canada is also from 1991 and uses CGA but to be fair it was originally ported on the Apple II in 1986 and they didn't bother to update the graphics when ported on the PC five years later so the graphics weren't much better than the Apple II original.
Thanks of much for the video, one of my favourite series on youtube.
Great video! And thank you for doing it with the correct aspect ratio! Too many people don't take that into consideration when they make dos games videos.
Police Quest 3 was so hard for a 12y old non-english speaking child :( But man I loved that game. Still got the box. And the intro theme by Jan Hammer (Miami Vice) - just dope on Sound Blaster FM synth.
Can't believe I watched this entire video. Very good, time well spent.
Wow. I played Corncob 3D when I was a kid, and I didn't know its name until now. I'm glad I watched this.
DR. SBAITSO!!! what a blast from the past, man!!!
I've played and beat all of the commander keen series. Such good memories.
Scorched Earth. What a game back then. I very good at it and we played hours with it with my brother and some friends.
I had all the Apogee games. This being a childhood favorite.
Did I just hear Rocky's theme at 12:31? A boss fight just couldn't be more epic
Wow, 1992 i start the PC fun with MS DOS 5.0 on my dad's PC, didn't know it came out only one year befor.
Just so you know, your videos are great inspiration for me wondering what to play next.
+mickmils Thank you for watching!
"Anatoly remembers", a modern rendition and homage to "Accolade" logo/animation. Love it! And the videos, of course. :)
Fantastic nostalgic content. Played a handful of these games in the day, but not too many. This is my first time learning Sim Ant was SVGA on PC. I assumed same visuals as on the Super NES. Looks like it was way more playable on PC...
Awesome stuff! I didn't even know of some of these.
that was quite a trip down the memory lane
I always wanted to play the Leisure Suit Larry's, but I was afraid of my Mom finding out at the time if I had any of them lol
My mom played them herself and absolutely loved them :D
I remember trying to play and not being able to pass the age test. I tried to get creative and asked my parents friends...Those were the days!
I played quite a few of these. Must have been the pinnacle year of using our computer.
Played most of these games later on! :) By 1991, I was a student of computer programming and was still playing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (the action game) on a Schneider Euro PC 2 at high school ;)
Thanks for this ;)
supaplex was my game oh lord, i was introduced to it way after it was released but i used to play it for hours lmao had to fight my little brother for turns!
great you just made me cry like a baby
Great compilation as ever and goddamn I laughed my ass off during the song at the end :D
I'm so proud of myself for randomly coming up with the idea, and actually following through on it. :)
I'm 32, and many of these games were my first exposure to PC gaming. I remember having to memorize the commands to access these games lol
you are 36 now
Scorched Earth! I played that game so much. Never got old.
İ played many games from this list. Good job
Amazing video 😁
A wonderful mix of nostalgia and games I'd never heard of that look interesting :) It was an interesting time - I love the numerous attempts at digitized speech, with varying degrees of success and horror.
Falcon 3.0 got me into config.sys and autoexec.bat optimizing ... DOS=HIGH,UMB and DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.SYS RAM FRAME=E000 after HIMEM.SYS so I could DEVICEHIGH and LOADHIGH the rest - because that game wanted like 615k of free BASE memory to start !!
Crystal Caves looks a lot like Secret Agent Man! Great video :)
Wow! So many great games i played my self. Cool that you make Years Lower now. So i guess we will see 1996 on 30. Dezember as always. Thank you for your great videos.
+Cho Jin Thank you for watching. It's likely going to be a few years before I get to 1996
So you go down now one year every year? When will you stop? 1986? I thought you go up till 1999 and then down. But you startet going down early.
Cho Jin I never had any intention of going till 1999, as the last big year for commercial DOS releases was 1997, and who knows, one day I might get there. As it currently stands, I just don't have a technical capability to capture many resource demanding games that came out in 96-97. I have struggled even with the 1995 video, which is why some of the games were presented in VGA instead of SVGA. So until I get better machines, I choose to go backwards instead. How far down will I go? I don't really know. But there's certainly enough games out there to keep me busy for years.
Merry Chrismas.
so next year it will be 1990. Was a great year of games too.
1986-1999 was my favorite time of gaming. Keep up the great work. Retro ftw!
Wow. I downloaded so many of these off my local Elite BBS at blazing 2400 speed. I'm not proud.
There’s old DOS games I used to play that I can never find... hoping they’re here as I’ve no way to remember what they’re called... Mars Monuments is one of them so thank you already. Hopefully the others are here too...
Of all games I only remember playing Arctic Adventure, The Games Challange, Civilisation, The Blues Brothers and F-117 Nighthawk . Amazing :). I used to play them during 1997-2000 since I was living in Bosnia at the time, after the war.
*grabs popcorn* preparing for nostalgic trip
Wow, thats list of legends
I had totally forgotten about zzt. Amazeballs. I also want to get crystal caves
Notice how quite a few of these are going 3D and including voice samples
OMG MOMUMENTS OF MARS... I COULDN'T FIGURE THE NAME OF THIS GAME FOREVER AND HAVE BEEN ON A CRUSADE TO FIND THE GAMES NAME THANK YOU!
Very interesting era of PC gaming. You can see some of the games are in EGA and some are in VGA. Some artists clearly had no idea what to do with the extra colors. If you are wondering what the risk was going for the VGA, it is like having an exclusive game for the new generation of "gaming system" except the market was only 1% what it is today.
my favs:
24:58 - The Games: Winter Challenge (MindSpan/Accolade
We've come a long way....
omg, Moraf's world! I thought I was the only one ever to play that game! hahaha
les manley in los l.a. I was looking for that game. Thanks so much!!! I could not finish this game . Last chapter. almost 20 years ago. I hope someone played this. I want see end of the this game. ))) wohooo
All these games look pretty good
I genuinely thought I'd imagined ZZT, but there it is xD I can distinctly remember it but couldn't remember what it was called hahah.
9:15 Star Citizen, proof it's been in development FOREVER!
catacomb's music is the same of commander keen 4
Memories. I was a HS teen! :D
12:30 Because when I go back to prehistoric times I want to hear the Rocky Theme.
If anyone can help me remember a game i was playing back then. It was on a gun boat, you had to shoot stuff all over the place while moving around in your boat ?
53:45 one of the best games ever made for DOS. Ever hear of the Worms series? here's the origin
Another world most epic game with best story i think :D
I always liked the rpg's like Might and Magic with the big detailed sprites.
I think games from 1991 are the oldest i have in my collection, too bad it's only a handful.
I search for a old dos game, which is like Descent but with only 8 or 16 colors and older. The rooms were mainly black with neon colors and you also have do flight through rings but you can also shoot enemies. Does anyone know which game i mean? I have unfortunaly forgot the name of the game.
41:05 Oh my god, my life is complete. I get to play dominoes with *fuckin' Leisure Suit Larry.*
A lot of flight sims and adventure games that year
my dad always told me: NEVER EVER EVER GO INTO DOS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. very good sound and sensible advice right there
15:35 lol, that escalated quickly
Was ZZT released so late? I remember having spent a lot of time with its editor mode. It was basically my first real game maker tool.
Each company released like +3 mayor games in the same year. People were really going to work in the gaming industry.
It probably also has a lot to do with the fact that it didn't take days to make a 3D model of each individual piece of furniture for a level.
DOS Nostalgia Yeah... But less resources, less technology, less workforce, though.
Btw, i always thank you for what you share with us, so im gonna do that again cause you really deserve it: thank you.
+Liberis Puritatem Thank you for watching!
Hi friend, excellent videos, but I have a question I'm looking for two games that I've been looking for for years and I can not find them, can you help me?
+ELGLADIADOR45210 Post as much as you can remember about them
Well one is from MS DOS I think it's from IBM so I remember it was about a construction, you handled a worker and you had to put the screws or rivets well that was the objective that if it was like 2 colors, the second is I think Of the 90's only that if it is more difficult because I think you will not understand me, but as far as I remember it was a rabbit (it's not jackrabbit) it was arcade but the scenario was kind of a sweet world, and on another level I think Which was like toys
hi - my name is doctor sbaitso - im here to help you (good selection of dos games btw)
I specifically requested a Willy Beamish haircut as a little kid. It was the worst haircut I've ever had in my life.
Metal mutant omg so nostalgia just a weird game :DDD
These were good retro games 😌😁🎮🕹.
I remember this soundtrack from the Space Jam movie
COMMANDER KEEN
I've played quite a few of these. Luckily we didn't have Steam back then telling us how many hours of Civ 1 had been played
Hey i'm looking a game played in 1990-1992
Could be commodore or amiga game, I don't remember very well. The character in the game was wearing a fez (or a different hat like this) and wearing a shoe that looked like aladdin's shoe (maybe a sandal from ancient cultures) There were zombies and skeletons in the game and if I remember correctly there was a dark background. I couldn't give much information but maybe it can be found
That intro music... Where is it from? I remember it but cant remember what game its from.
2 Unlimited - Get Ready for This
Cool !
Duude, your ideos are great!.
i mean videos
The year i was born :D
So many memories, expecially with Crystal Caves and The Simpson's game. Please somebody tell me if knows the name of a game with a pirate dog (or cat), the graphic was awesome and the gameplay too.
Claw/Captain Claw (Monolith Productions, 1997)
@@dosnostalgic Thank you very much! Looking for it on the web, I see it is a CD game and I can't explain how I could play it from a floppy disk. Anyway, your answer was really appreciated, thank you again.
Can you tell me or refer to a site with a list of the first VGA graphics DOS games? Edit: Nevermind Mobygames has a list.
