Finally found this too! Thank you! I had to search '"dos" game paint monster' and then scroll through a dozen images until this preview looked familiar.
OMG I have searched and searched years for this game!! I remember so much as a kid, but never knew the name, only the pictures or sounds. Today marks the day I finally found it, I constantly would search up "1990s educational dos games with numbers" or "dos math games" "dos educational games" or something with numbers, but I finally found you. Thank you!!!! 3/10/23
Fun fact: Bookworm, while slang term for someone who likes books, is also a colloquialism for one of two types of book-eating moth larvae. So it makes sense that Benny would become a butterfly (or moth) in this game.
Hello, if you, the creator of this video read this, I'd like to thank you for this video, I tried so hard to find this video game I played in my childhood, and I ended up finding it by accident. Thank you :D
Awww this nearly made me cry i played this when i was tiny word rescue and maths one ,my dad had a dos computer i was like 6 or 7 and im 33 now so emotional seeing this 😍wish id had more exposure to computers after that
First game I ever remember playing, I was a little too young and pretty bad at it. It's so good to see a video like this, brought back some happy childhood memories.
Finally in 2021 I discovered what this game was called. I remember playing it at my school in the computer room and competing with my friends. Thanks for save a part of my beautiful life. I can be happy now
Holy shit, the nostalgia. I played these games about 20 years ago back when I was in school, along with Granny's Garden, Mario Teaches Typing, Math Circus, and Paginitzu. I couldn't remember what these two were called though, but I remembered you could kill enemies with slime. So I googled "educational slime video game", and this video turned up.
Oh man I completely forgot about this game I had as a kid, but as soon as I saw that loading screen with the purple monster it all came flooding back to me.
WOW I’ve been googling trying to figure this game out since the early 2000’s THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! Christ I was subscribed to you for a long time and I can’t believe I never realize you uploaded this looool
This really takes me back! Fantastic video! I have so many fond and wonderful memories of this game. I also had Math Rescue! Made me cry watching it! Thank you again for sharing! ♥️
I'd trade almost anything to go back in time to when I'd play this game as a kid. Floppy disks, DOS, three kids sitting on a bench in front of the computer. I couldn't even read yet so I'd just watch my big brother and sister play most of the time. Thanks for bringing this back to me. I needed this moment of nostalgia.
This very much reminds me of the shareware game Pickle Wars. A game I got very young at a local PC shop on floppy. Which was made by the same company Redwood games. I played through that game way too many times to count.
I had played Word Rescue and Math Rescue when I was a little child. I remember when my cousin and I re-enact Word Rescue at the outside of my house. Haha.
Thank you so much for reviewing these games and letting me know about the website. I have often thought about these games but couldn't remember what they were called!
I forgot the name of this game and was searching for my childhood game I grew up. Finally after 5-7 years of searching I found it during corona crisis xD
Omg. I have been trying to find this game for almost 26 years. I am from Brazil and I used to play it when I was 5. The year was 1995 and i remember this game being one of the things we had to do on computer. It was very educational cause we could train a little bit of our English too.
MATH RESCUE! I have always vaguely remembered a game I played as a kid that had a butterfly pour slime on enemies, and thanks to you I've finally figured out the mystery of what game it was! Thank you! :D
I loved this game in elementary school since Math Rescue and Word Rescue were the only games on the computer. so of course instead of the having to do the typing stuff on the computer we would choose to play these games. Awesome Review!
Now here's a memory only a few might have. Playing Word Rescue with a black and white monitor, and trying to collect the word items that referenced colours and basically having to guess which shade of grey was which colour lest you trigger extra enemies
I was looking through your reviews, secretly hoping I'd find that one game I used to play as a kid... And I found it... Commander Keen, followed by Duke Nukem II who I used to call Commander Kool :P
Man, I must say, even if they for elementary gamers, they actually look sort of fun! I could imagine myself doing a playthrough with goofy as hell post-commentary just for giggles! Good reviews man, I just recently started watching them big time and you do a great job! Informative and with light hearted humour. Peace.
i remember playing Word Rescue and Math rescue in 3rd grade compy lab. :) we mostly always just rushed through the typing 'work' we had to do then went straight on to Oregon Trail.
@phreakindee ah well I was off by 3 years. as Apogee where publishing until 1994, after that they made 2 brands they published games under, like 3DRealms and Pinball Wizards.
I'd had nostalgic memories of this game for a long time but only just now bothered to try and look it up. I just wrote "vocabulary computer game 90s" and it was one of the first choices.
I never had Word Rescue, but I'm pretty sure I had both Math Rescues...most definitely the Plus version. LOVE them, and Treasure Mathstorm, even though math was always my least favorite subject. :P It was mostly the graphics and the environments that were awesome--the candy land was the best, and the ocean, and cave and all.
I loved these as a child, but considering I also watched my siblings play the original Prince of Persia and its requisite bloody deaths, I always had this bad habit of imagining what would happen to the kids if Benny didn't save them like he does, and it was always kind of terrifying in my head as a kid. Thinking back on it, it's just weird. Still, it's nice to see all these nostalgic reviews. XD
Huh, re-watching old LGR vids and just realized @10:31 ... Garbage Trunk? What an interesting thing to teach children. Though, I guess it might make kids who grew up learning from these games easier to spot. "Ooh, a siren, sounds like a Firetrunk's coming." ;p
Wow, I thought I was the only one who did the "farting" bug in Word Rescue. I also always thought that the character that you play as in Math Recue was the younger brother of the male hero of Word Rescue. After all, they both share the same searingly blond hair and broiled skin tone.
Excellent review! Never played these titles, I think these skipped my country. Keen and Nukem were regulars here ofcourse, they were everywhere! In my opinion, letting children play these, Hugo(DOS) or the King's Quest series, they got a really good way of learning English. Atleast it worked back in my day, I know from experience.
I remember an elementary teacher copied that floppy for me to play one or both of these games at home. Don't remember which but I played the hell out of these games.
9 years, 9 long years I have been trying to remember and find this game. Finally at the end month of 2016 I have found it. Thank you so much.
It took me another year, but I finally found it too!
O.0 me too
Its simply called word rescue and nothing obscure in there or anything.whats so difficult to remember lol.
same here, all i could remember this game by was collecting books and after googling a while i finally found it
Finally found this too! Thank you! I had to search '"dos" game paint monster' and then scroll through a dozen images until this preview looked familiar.

I've been trying to remember this game for 20 years!!!
These were my favourite computer games as a kid! I have been trying to find these games forever, I forgot their names. Thanks for sharing the video!
This comment may be three years later but there is a site called PlayDOSGames that has this game and others like it.
Fun fact: Bookworm, while slang term for someone who likes books, is also a colloquialism for one of two types of book-eating moth larvae. So it makes sense that Benny would become a butterfly (or moth) in this game.
Bearibou SCIENCE!
Hm... I guess “book caterpillar” isn’t as catchy, but the misnomer is still dumb. Lol
These were two of my favorite games to play when I was in Elementary school! It was one of the things that I liked about school.

I know the feeling, I grew up with this game too and it's hard to watch.
First game I ever remember playing, I was a little too young and pretty bad at it. It's so good to see a video like this, brought back some happy childhood memories.

This was my favorite game in computer class
holy heck, I used to play the heck out of word rescue
dude me too. I finally found the name of this game here. Nostalgia. Also it's on Steam, lol XD
I laughed out loud when you created Benny's story using the random stolen words from a level. Amazing!
Wow! I always remembered this game that I played when I was a kid, and finally I have found it! Thanks man

I always loved the dark purple blob thing.
Dose melty faces!
My friend John and I called those ones "Geezer Gruzzles"
Do you still love it? The dark purple blob
Nostalgia overload man.

Thanks so much for posting this. I played this around 1995 or so and wanted to see it again.
I had no idea anyone else had ever played these games. I thought they were just a fever dream.
I played this and a few others that I sadly cant find or even remember the name of.
This very much reminds me of the shareware game Pickle Wars. A game I got very young at a local PC shop on floppy. Which was made by the same company Redwood games. I played through that game way too many times to count.
I love old PC or nintendo game reviews you and the AVGN are ma fave reviewers in games from the 70's 80's 90's . Keep these comin man! :-D
Some of my absolute FAVE games of my childhood, best "edutainment" games I've ever played.
I had played Word Rescue and Math Rescue when I was a little child. I remember when my cousin and I re-enact Word Rescue at the outside of my house. Haha.
So many memories playing this game!

Loved these gams when I was a kid! That theme song is eternally burned in my head.
Thank you for up
I played Word rescue over 25 years ago and couldn’t remember the name, thanks for sharing!
Omg. I have been trying to find this game for almost 26 years. I am from Brazil and I used to play it when I was 5. The year was 1995 and i remember this game being one of the things we had to do on computer. It was very educational cause we could train a little bit of our English too.
These were a couple of games I always saw in my dad's shareware catalogs but never in real life. Nice to know they were good.
I remember these games from 30 years ago. and I even remember playing these games when I was a kid.
This was the best game to play on pc as a kid 😊😊😊
NOSTALGIA GLASSES KICKING IN!
MATH RESCUE! I have always vaguely remembered a game I played as a kid that had a butterfly pour slime on enemies, and thanks to you I've finally figured out the mystery of what game it was! Thank you! :D
I loved the background art for these games as a kid. Not a lot of games really got the most out of the EGA palette like these did.
I loved this game in elementary school since Math Rescue and Word Rescue were the only games on the computer. so of course instead of the having to do the typing stuff on the computer we would choose to play these games. Awesome Review!
...So, in short, the Gruzzles' philosophy in life is, "Fuck everything we can't do, and fuck everyone who can actually do it!"
RyuTora2808 yyep
Math rescure... OMG THAT GAME WAS SO AWESOME!
and it still is!!! Are you still alive?
@@charleskuss8428I am lol
great game indeed
Is the boy in the game actually the young Duke Nukem?
No.
@@OleAlexanderBrunaes congrats, you just replied to an inactive, 8 year old comment
*You* of all people prefer English over math??
I feel so incredibly validated
It is nice to see a classic edutainment title that actually resembles a game.
you still alive?
@@charleskuss8428 *taps self*
Um, yeah, pretty sure I still am.
Keen was one of the first ones I played.
Maybe cosmo …
Now here's a memory only a few might have. Playing Word Rescue with a black and white monitor, and trying to collect the word items that referenced colours and basically having to guess which shade of grey was which colour lest you trigger extra enemies
ok i am crying right now because while i was studying this game came to my mind. we had this game in our floppy disc.
I adored these games when I was younger.
I love the ending of this vid, the most random (what I can only guess is a cat) creature bobbing its head. lol
I played this game all the time as a kid:)
Wow I remember my parents getting both of these games for me to help me "learn"... and WOW it's on Steam!
This was a great game back in the day!
Thanks for a nice video and the links :)
I was looking through your reviews, secretly hoping I'd find that one game I used to play as a kid... And I found it... Commander Keen, followed by Duke Nukem II who I used to call Commander Kool :P
Matrilwood Well, Duke IS pretty cool.
This is one of the first DOS games I ever played!
Wow this takes me back.
OH MY GOD NOSTALGIA. *flails* I was trying to remember the names of these games for ages, I'm so glad I found this!!
Playing Steam version right now, it`s awesome.) I know, it`s for kids, but... but.. but it`s really addictive game.)
It is, isn't it? There's something satisfying about it.
+Сергей Пономарев I had no clue this existed for steam.. that's awesome!
Lazy Game Reviews this is the best game I grew up with, the music gets me, my childhood. How old are you?
Man, I must say, even if they for elementary gamers, they actually look sort of fun! I could imagine myself doing a playthrough with goofy as hell post-commentary just for giggles! Good reviews man, I just recently started watching them big time and you do a great job! Informative and with light hearted humour. Peace.
I remember playing this at club after school. This and super solvers. Both were on these very old computers with amber on black screens.
i remember playing Word Rescue and Math rescue in 3rd grade compy lab. :) we mostly always just rushed through the typing 'work' we had to do then went straight on to Oregon Trail.
I played this game a lot, had a good atmosphere
@phreakindee ah well I was off by 3 years. as Apogee where publishing until 1994, after that they made 2 brands they published games under, like 3DRealms and Pinball Wizards.
I really get that nostalgic feeling watching this video. I played the shit out of Word and Math rescue.
I used to have Word Rescue when I was younger. It took me 5 years to pluck up the courage to actually play though. Those slimes were bloody scary xD.
I'd had nostalgic memories of this game for a long time but only just now bothered to try and look it up. I just wrote "vocabulary computer game 90s" and it was one of the first choices.
Summer at my Granny's flashbacks came when I heard the SFXs
omfg this game I found the name finally thank you so much for uploading this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I played this game soo long ago
I remember playing these 2 games years ago. They were fun and educational.. well, educational for little kids, but fun to play anyways.
Hi.
I did purchase this game on 1996 from Apogee.
Word rescue is very good educational game.
Holy cow I haven't even thought about this thing since I was a very little kid. Good find.
This game taught me English
In our class of 30 kids and 2 computers in the whole room. This game was a HOT commodity to play.
We had this at my elementary school omg
I played Word Rescue so much as a kid :x

I think I played something very similar back when I was a kid. Hang on, I DID play this!
Man, right in the childhood!
thank you for the video. my sister and i played this game all the time when we were little but couldn't remember the name now.

I am a 2000 kids was looking for old school Math Game All ways.😐
This seems like a cool game for kids. I spent my childhood playing Star Wars: Knights of the old republic and Baldur's gate with my dad.
Word Rescue was my jam
I loved these games as a kid though I think I was playing them in 1997.
Wow I used to play this game when I was like 6 super cool
Holy wow. Couldn't remember the name of this game. Played the hell out of it as a kid.
That dog at the end left me creasing. :')
remember this game like it was yesterday, loved it, never improved my maths though. Music was phat
great upload, good job!
I remember an elementary teacher copied that floppy for me to play one or both of these games at home. Don't remember which but I played the hell out of these games.
"Biology rescue" XD. Genius.
Great review
I Love this game! Played it at school in first grade :D
amazing vid... biggest nostalgia trip right now
hold me
When I was a kid I had a nightmare of that butterfly pouring that bucket of slime on me.
