Rescued fur farm foxes touch the ground for the first time - Emotional Video

  • 3 months ago, a massive fur farm in Iowa was bought out and shut down by Save A Fox Corporation. This may be the largest fur farm buyout in the US. Over 500 foxes living in small wire cages, waiting to be killed for their fur, are now safe and are patiently waiting for their chance at a better life. Our sanctuary took in 3 of these foxes. Watch them explore and touch the ground for the first time...

Yes I agree but is there anything stopping people from starting new fur farms? I do not live in the US so I have no clue about the laws, but you do say buying out so I assume they just bought the foxes and the owners can go get more somewhere else and continue farming? I should check out Save A Fox to get more answers of course but I am asking you since you sparked the interest.

It breaks my heart that fur is still sold in America and that people actually buy it. It’s the most horrific and unnecessary thing. I’m in tears watching them, and thinking about the conditions they were rescued from. They have emotions and thoughts, just like we do, and I’m sure once they understand that you saved them, they will become really sweet and happy to see you each day. I rescued battery hens who had never even seen the sky before, or felt grass under their feet, and they became the best chickens I ever had, because I am sure they were thanking me for the retirement I gave them. They would jump up on my lap for cuddles and followed me all around the garden each day, helping me do the weeding. They instinctively knew how to sun bathe and dig holes in the dirt to fluff around in, it was so beautiful to watch, knowing what they had endured at egg farm. Keep doing what you do, but remind yourself that you can’t save them all, even though I know you want to, as do I.

It’s so scary/strange for animals who’ve only lived on concrete all their lives to feel the texture of dirt, leaves and grass. Very touching to watch…but it is also hard to watch because it underlines how much they’ve suffered. You and the folks who bought the fur farm have really changed the lives of these poor babies. I’m amazed at how well they are adjusting. They will need to build muscle mass to help with their agility.

I follow Save A Fox. Mykala does awesome work with her rescue. I hope you can take more at some point. They sure have a lot to home. Judging from the foxes at Savannah A Fox, these animals are really resilient. They are loving and enjoy their tummy rubs. They make the funniest noises. They frequently look like they bite and nibble but they don’t actually clamp down. It must be a behavior they use for acceptance. Like they grab with their mouth but don’t hurt you. They love digging holes and playing with their dog toys. And they enjoy climbing trees. Thank you for homing them! ❤

When I saw an ad in the local newspaper, I was thrilled to see a big ad looking for "farm" help at many positions and well above minimum wage, I eagerly went for an interview with Space Farms. I had zero idea that Space Farms was a thriving mink farm and as desperate as I was for work, I marched away from this interview without a second thought. I had hoped this terrible practice was over........shame!

I have been following these foxes since they were first posted about on Sav a Fox and have been donating over there hoping that they could save them from the farmer! It was so nice when that original battle was won and since then it has been nice to see them being placed in good facilities and sanctuaries. I have seen other animals with this ‘slipper foot’ from living on wire only and generally it doesn’t go away entirely but is much improved over time with a good diet and as the tendons grow stronger with exercise. You will need to watch the white (platinum?) that it doesn’t get sunburn on any exposed skin. Like any other white Animal they are more prone to skin cancer. Im so thrilled for these sweet foxes that they get to live out their lives with you!!Love their names and know they will soon be even more comfortable with you.

The fur is beautiful ON the ANIMALS, but imo it always looks a little gruesome on humans. I understand in some places in the world where people hunt for food and to live and use the fur and meat after hunting, but it's so sad where animals are kept for their lives in small and inhumane cages. And, yes the faux fur has come a long way and is beautiful so why not choose it instead.

What a bunch of cuties! ❤
Couple of tips: Noel over in FtL discovered the ULTIMATE Floridian fox treat/bribe: fresh MANGO. His two foxes Loki and Tyr would probably agree to do linear calculus for bits of mango. File that one for reference!
Also, hook latches. They're a nope...and in fact, foxes sometimes view things like that as a challenge, so using something considerably more mechanically daunting for latching the enclosure door would be a very good idea. Our own silver, back years ago, had a major contempt for hook latches, and figured out how to open them even if they were at the top of the doorframe! Something auto-latching would be more fox-proof...understanding, of course, that NOTHING is actually fox-proof. That being said, it's worth noting that they LOVE treat puzzles. The little boogers like puzzles in general (hence the "nothing is fox-proof" thing... it's what you'd expect when foxes decide that EVERYTHING is toys), and they can get extremely adept at even the more complicated ones.
They're such sweeties, though. They smell, they tear things up...but there's really nothing like connecting with a fox. Even these rescues that Mikayla is taking right from the farm are capable of figuring out who YOU are... because they know that people aren't the same person. And the breeding process that gives them the "exotic" colors is about the same one used in the Novosibirsk experiment, so they're sort of "wired" for general tameness...with a bit more intelligence to boot. That pool of foxes is now 60+ generations removed from their basic phenotype, and fur ranchers in the USA had access to Dr. Belyaev's data back in the mid-1980s, so they're really well along on that "redomestication" curve...probably 25-30 generations with the rescues.
But the real payoff is this. Just watching them have the zoomies for the first time ever is so heartwarming. How anyone would even WANT a fox fur is beyond me. It's much better still attached to the fox!
