I remember the game's marketing using the slogan "Made by freaks. For freaks". What aggrivates a lot of people when it comes to the writing will likely appeal really hard to that small niche who do enjoy that sorta dumb playfull humor. I remember us watching NicoB's stream of the game and we were all having fun playing along the fun, dumb attitude of the game. That being said, I'm pretty sure everyone, even that small niche, hates Violet. Other than being VERY annoying, she (without spoiling) also screws things up for everyone.
If it makes you feel better Woolie, you might be glad to know that the jokes begin to peter out about 1/4 into the game (once Neon Green starts to become a bigger presence). They're still in the Danganronpa-like side content though, but that's to be expected.
Two whole Machine Girl LPs for the soundtrack and the chance to keep your friends up at night trying to beat their times? It's rad, I think I remember yakkocmn alluding to it as a game for folks growin up watchin Toonami

If anything I found the script to be pretty endearing and catered to some kind of common anime tropes yeah, but I never felt myself cringing at the dialogue. I feel like Woolie and Pat might just be a little too weathered and cynical for 2022 anime game dialogue. Neon White is kind of the McDonalds of narrative. It's pretty easily predictable and you know where its going, it doesn't really break any new ground but you know what you're getting. Honestly with the dialogue, I'd say its a lot less cringe than any of Chie's line readings in Persona 4, and Woolie fuckin LOVES her.

He also gets a weapon that's a cowboy hat, and when he receives it, he immediately does a Micheal Jackson dance. -Vergil is literally the guy who was a sensitive poetry loving boy who had a trauma that turned him into the biggest edgelord/emo ever, and also is the trope of "Serious overpowered anime character who thinks everyone is beneath them" to the point where the only thing that's missing is him wearing glasses that he pushes up his nose as he talks down to you. -Nero is literally "male anime protagonist: the character" complete with cocky attitude, awkward ignorance of love interest for way too long, also says cheesy one liners, etc. He even has a VA who is known for voicing similar characters in other games and anime. And even stuff like the cutscenes and other situations in that series. You guys even jokingly love how Dante and Vergil are pretty much doing all of what they do because of "mmmmmmuther". All of it, for all intents and purposes, is cringe by a lot of peoples' standards. But we love it because it's part of the fun. Neon White is pretty much the exact same kind of thing. well that's the thing: there's no reason to assume it's satire. it needs to be way more tongue-in-cheek about it if it's satire, but it's not. i mean, this is supposed to be a team of people who play and understand anime and japanese video games enough to make a beach episode reference right? and they're from an outsider culture, they're not even close to the media culturally for them to be blind to it's more pernicious aspects, right? and yet you're having a way harder time telling if it's satire than something like no more heroes, which is MADE by japanese people who consume a ton of anime and video games.
Honestly the voices are what really sell how purposeful the cringe is. If it was just text to read then to me it would definitely come off as a “try hard” trying to write edgy dialogue they think everybody would love for how “cool” the main characters are.
The game will be 100 times better if all the character speak giberish and the story was just not there. EVERY DIALOG IS THE WORST CLICHE ANIME CRINGE POSIBLE. Clustertrcuk has a better story and characters than Neon White. But to the game favor you can skip all the dialog so cringe is optional.
I know it's got it's target audience, and I'm sure it was entirely intentional, but it's honestly put me off from buying it anywhere near full price, because to me, the game seemed to be marketed as a sleek, straightforward fast paced action game, and the character meanderings just break the pacing and the vibe of the gameplay into a million bits.
@@Trynt33 I think the issue is that the game seems to appeal in some way to two audiences. Some people are really drawn to the stylish presentation and slick gameplay, some are drawn to the nostalgic toonami-esque dub and off the wall script. For some, myself included, the two elements clash.

If its satire it "bad satire"
well that's the thing: there's no reason to assume it's satire. it needs to be way more tongue-in-cheek about it if it's satire, but it's not. i mean, this is supposed to be a team of people who play and understand anime and japanese video games enough to make a beach episode reference right? and they're from an outsider culture, they're not even close to the media culturally for them to be blind to it's more pernicious aspects, right? and yet you're having a way harder time telling if it's satire than something like no more heroes, which is MADE by japanese people who consume a ton of anime and video games.

Honestly the voices are what really sell how purposeful the cringe is.
If it was just text to read then to me it would definitely come off as a “try hard” trying to write edgy dialogue they think everybody would love for how “cool” the main characters are.
Ya no. The voice actors do an amazing job of selling the attitude of the characters. It would not be nearly as entertaining without them.
The game will be 100 times better if all the character speak giberish and the story was just not there. EVERY DIALOG IS THE WORST CLICHE ANIME CRINGE POSIBLE. Clustertrcuk has a better story and characters than Neon White. But to the game favor you can skip all the dialog so cringe is optional.
I know it's got it's target audience, and I'm sure it was entirely intentional, but it's honestly put me off from buying it anywhere near full price, because to me, the game seemed to be marketed as a sleek, straightforward fast paced action game, and the character meanderings just break the pacing and the vibe of the gameplay into a million bits.

@@Trynt33 I think the issue is that the game seems to appeal in some way to two audiences. Some people are really drawn to the stylish presentation and slick gameplay, some are drawn to the nostalgic toonami-esque dub and off the wall script. For some, myself included, the two elements clash.

"repetitive gameplay" It's a speedrunning game. Repeating missions to get better times is the point.
