    Guys, I need your opinion on something. My cousin (with whom I go to school) has a learning disability that often limits and delays his general understanding and processing skills. Well, the science fair was coming up, and I didn't want him to do badly, so I was going to recommend he do the paper towel experiment, but a group of friends told me I shouldn't...how my cous' had a project in mind he really wanted to do...how I should let him do what he wants. But the thing is, I wanted him to do something simple so he wouldn't risk messing up and getting a bad grade. After all, he may be a hard worker, but he is a slow learner. He even has to depend on others to help set up the chemistry equipment during in-class activities, something we all can do individually. It's really not hard. As far as I'm concerned, it's better for him to stick with whatever is easy and simple, given his learning disability. That's why I _hope_ he doesn't choose to go to college; I'd much rather he just get a job at a store or something. It's safe there. I'm really looking out for him.
    Anyway, I told our friends that I didn't think it was a good idea for him to do a science project without any pointers or guidance from me whatsoever (within the rules of the science fair, of course; I don't cheat). I told my friends I doubted he would successfully use the scientific method and get a good grade. They lectured me on, quote them, "underestimating the boy who is full of potential." That's just it---I was right and they were wrong. In the end, my cousin got a bad grade, not only because he was incorrect about some things regarding scientific nature, but because he misunderstood the scientific method. I said to my friends, "See? He didn't do so hot, now did he? I told you this would happen if he didn't get any tips from me. It would've been a lot easier if he'd just done the classic paper towel experiment. Safe and simple. But because you insisted I leave him alone entirely, he got a bad grade, as I predicted. Who's right now?" They told me that while my prediction was right it didn't make _me_ right. That my prediction coming true just makes me twice a jerk. I don't get it. I'm "twice a jerk" just because my prediction came true? I'm the one to blame because what I anticipated would happen...happened? It's not my fault my cousin did exactly what I thought he would. It's not my fault he has a learning disability. My friends said that they may have been wrong when they predicted he would do well, but that they were still right because they believed in him. Well, they can lecture me on not believing in him, but they can't lecture me on how he did. I expected this to happen, and it did, and now I'm the bad guy here? But for what? For being right about my prediction?? Someone clarify my friends' point of view against me.

      Ur in the right here
      He has a learning disability, and since u care enough about him, u insisted he do the project that was simple. Ur friends don't understand this

      @johnrainsman6650 2 года назад +3

      @@thathairbrush4990 well I know I’m right, but I still don’t understand how that makes me “twice the jerk”. What do my friends mean with their words and perspectives?

    • @bwnnie
      @bwnnie 2 года назад +7

      @@johnrainsman6650 okay i understand both point of views. the reason why you're in the wrong, is because he is not your responsibility. let your cousin do what he wants to do, if he fails, its his fault but he already knows this. dont baby your cousin just because he has a learning disability, sure he does need help but that doesnt mean you baby him and make him do something simple. you dont get to decide what your cousin gets to do, you dont get to decide what anyone does with their lives. but im not making you be the bad guy! you have the right intentions, it just sounds like you're babying him. i hope this helps, and sorry if i sound rude or harsh, i wasnt trying to be!

    • @jakebastian6726
      @jakebastian6726 2 года назад +4

      @@bwnnie Wait, I think I understand both point of views too, but my interpretation is different than yours. See, I don't think John's friends confronted him for "babying" his cousin. No, I think they confronted him for thinking little of said cousin. There are these two little things called "faith" and potential." John didn't have any faith in his cousin's potential. It sounds to me like he thinks his cousin is no more than a person with a learning disability. A person in that position is not ultimately unable to do well in certain tasks (especially academic); they just have to learn through their own ways, with a little more time. Maybe the cousin just didn't find the route to make his project a success. Maybe if he had, he would've done well. I don't think his learning disability ultimately would've wrecked his project under *any* circumstances at all. John seemed to think that though, and while it's true he was looking out for the cousin he cares for, he was also questioning the guy's intellectual abilities. _That's_ the issue I think his friends are trying to point out. They also pointed out that while John's prediction was right, it made him "twice the jerk." I can see how that's confusing, because John can't help that his prediction came true. But he could've predicted the possibility that his cousin would do well; he wouldn't. His friends did, and that makes them moral, respectful friends of his, even if their prediction was wrong. You can still be right and yet obnoxious. Being right doesn't necessarily make you the "winner" or the "good guy," as many people seem to think. I think it is possible to be right and unfair at the same time. I guess you can't put it in words, the philosophy that your prediction of a unsuccessful worker makes you "twice the jerk." It's pretty complicated. I guess you gotta _feel_ it, not think and say it

      If you're trying to help your child find a project, check out the Topic Selection Wizard on our site: www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/topic-selection-wizard/background-info. It's a quiz they can fill out about their interests (sports, video games, animals, cooking, etc) and it will match them with science projects they might like!
