- Woodturning Lidded Cherry Ebonized Wood Bowl Video
In this Start-to-Finish woodturning video, I will share with you how I turned this lidded black cherry bowl and how I ebonized the surface before applying a finish coat of Tried and True Danish Oil.
Adding a lid to a bowl can be a challenge because the lid needs to fit the bowl very precisely. Matching a lid to a bowl also requires that the wood is properly dry so it does not deform after turning.
I initially rough turned this cherry wood bowl blank several months ago and let it dry, or equalize. The reason for letting this dry is so that the final turned wood bowl and lid won't continue to warp or reshape. We want the lid to fit and seat properly to the bowl.

Kent, I am very critical of anyone who teaches anything. You, in my opinion, are a very good teacher/instructor. Your voice and mannerisms are pleasing and your knowledge and command of the subject impressive. Your camera work in your videos couldn’t be better. As someone who is fairly new to the craft I’d like to thank you for helping me. Please keep up your good work , Curt
Curt, thank you for your honesty and appreciation! I'm glad to help and I wish you all the best. Happy Turning!
The gaffer tape tip is brilliant! THANKS
Glad it was helpful! Yes, love that stuff. Happy Turning!
Kent, you haven’t yet made a bowl that I don’t like. Your curve development is superb. Thanks and keep safe.
Thanks I appreciate you! Happy Turning!
Well the small turning club I joined monthly project is due Saturday brings me here. We are supposed to make a lidded box.
I am a newbie but with your excellent teaching it sure lessens the learning curve a bit with your concise instructions. I got the pecan blank turned into a a hollow bowlish shape and now ready for the lid.
With a little luck and some chops in my face I’ll get it done tomorrow.
Thanks again Ken!
You can do it! Be patient and remember no matter what happens you are learning!
Persistent, patient practice will yield amazing results!
All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I watch a LOT of bowl turning videos and I always come back to your channel because I like your style of turning and processes the best of all of them. Please keep up the great work and the videos coming! You're an A+ guy!
Awesome, thank you so much! I appreciate you! Happy Turning!
My older sisters' birthday is coming up later this month, the bowl you just made is exactly what I'm going to try. I didn't have a thick enough blank to do the job so I glued two bowl blanks together. My experience lever might be tested here but faint heart never won fair lady. I just hope I can make the saying fit the situation.
Wonderful! You can do it. Enjoy the process. Happy Turning!
Kent, you inspired me to recreate this design with a spalted-maple blank. Completed it today; lots of slow, careful work for a novice, but with your superb technical guidance I created something well above my pay grade. I especially love how the knob reflects the bowl and lid profile -- design perfection. Many thanks, and keep teaching!
Fantastic Ralph! Keep up the great work. Well done! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Beautiful
Thanks a ton! Happy Turning!
Thanks Kent for sharing this!
You are very welcome
Nice bowl Kent.
Thanks 👍 Happy Turning!
Ouuuuuutstanding, Kent!!! Another neat lesson.👍👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing!

Awwwesssommmeee. Thanks and Happy Turning! ;)
This is an Awesome amount of information. I am Very interested using these techniques in a segmented project. I Keep reminding myself that just because these are "simple" techniques, It doesn't mean that they are "easy". I'm upgrading to a real lathe for an "Shopsmith" machine today and am looking forward to making cool stuff. Thanks. Be Well and Good Journey. Richie
Richie, Glad it was helpful! Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thank you for the very detailed explanation on how to make a lidded bowl. I can’t wait to try it ;)
Awesome, go for it, Greg. You can do it. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Beautiful piece of work there!
Thank you! Cheers!
Really nice Tim ! Looks great
Glad you like it. Thank you kindly! Happy Turning!
Extremely nice. I made a few lids a long time ago in the the '60s. Not sure how I did it but the knob was part of the lid and I used construction paper to separate the lid from the sacrificial wood attached to the face plate. Didn't know that chucks existed back then
I like the way the knob and bowl mirror each other. The ebonised areas create a visual separation and gives the eye more to look at.
Thank you. I'm glad you like that too. Happy Turning!
Absolutely the most pleasing lathe turning I e seen in quite a while! I have a lot to learn!
Thank you very much! Happy Turning!
Nice bowl!! Time to go make one!
Go for it! Have fun and Happy Turning!
Pretty,👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Very well done. Very creative.
Thank you Lars! Happy Turning!
Very Beautiful!
Thank you very much!
Very nice Kent, appreciate the commentary during the turning process, always something to pick up.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you and Happy Turning!
I very much enjoy your teaching style, I always learn from watching your vids. I've been turning just sense December 21 and have got about 20 some bowls, always learning. Thank you for your content.
I’m so happy to know I’ve been part of your woodturning learning process, Shon. Thank you for your support! Happy Turning!
Great project. Liked the contrasting finish. Keep the videos coming. Happy New Year.
Thank you, Jack! Happy New Year!
I enjoyed the video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Love it I planned on listing a bowl thanks for the lesson.
Glad it was helpful! Happy Turning!
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill for us noobies.... I have done a few candle sticks, and I am wanting to try a bowl...my skills are not great yet, nor do I have a good grasp on sharpening the different tools yet, but I will journey on and keep watching you masters of the craft and get better as I go.
Glad it was helpful! You can make the bowls you imagine! Check out the courses on my website (in the top menu) www.TurnAWoodBowl.com they will take a lot of guessing and wasted time out of the equation for you. All the best and Happy Turning!
That’s an incredible Lidded Bowl! I hope,to,make one like it.
Thanks. You can do it! Happy Turning!
As usual, an excellent narrative of what and why you are doing of all the different stages of turning the lid and bowl.
Thank you very much! Happy Turning!
I am very impressed with the design and workmanship of the bowl. Even more impressed with your teaching technique. My wife’s favorite bowl is one I made from apiece of construction lumber very early in my wood turning life. It is essentially the same design but crude. Now I am inspired to make her a more elegant one.
That is awesome! Thank you for sharing and all the best to you. Happy Turning!
Great video with tremendous description and technique
Thank you kindly!
Great class,thank you
Thank you Michael! Happy Turning!
What a beautiful lidded bowl! I love the color combination and especially love how well the top fits with the bowl and when closed looks like its just one piece! Wonderful piece of art!
Thank you so much! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Nice work
Thank you! Happy Turning!
I’ve been thinking a project would come along that would catch my ever-shortening attention. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Enjoy and Happy Turning!
I really enjoyed this video, as with all of your videos. I am specifically trying to find a technique to maximize the feathering in a black walnut crotch piece, and I thought a lidded bowl would be great for that. Thanks for your detailed videos. I learn so much more from you than others, because you explain what you are doing, what finish you are using, grit, etc. Keep on producing!
Thank you for writing and sharing! So glad to help. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Kent, as usual, that was awesome! I learn so much from watching you and really appreciate the explanations you give throughout the video! I have lots of deep blanks that I’d always imagined would be turned to deep bowls. I now know that some of them will end up as lidded bowls based on your fine tutorial! Thank you so much for sharing what you do!
Thanks and I'm excited for you seeing new opportunities. Have fun with it and Happy Turning!
Another great video Kent. Thanks buddy
You bet. Thanks and Happy Turning!
A master class Kent, thanks for taking the time to explain each part of the process :-)
Glad you enjoyed it. You're very welcome! Happy Turning!
Beautiful really a cute bowl nice size plus good color combination love it
Thanks so much 😊 Happy Turning!
Exquisite piece of work. This is the best turning site I've seen- you talk and say all the stuff we need to hear. I've liked and subscribed... now all I need is to get a lathe, tools, sharpening tech, collection of different woods and all the rest..! You never know, I just might!
Wow, thank you! Do it, you'll love it. Happy Turning!
Hi Kent. Beautiful piece, as always.
I made a few lidded boxes from beech branches, end-to-end grain. (Split the branch, dried to avoid cracks and joint with epoxy to get a blank). Turned with the spindle gouge. Turned out nice.
And did a lidded bowl once from a Y-branch, wide enough to show just a bit of the natural edge.
I find pieces with a lid very satisfying to make and see, yours is inspirational. Thank you!
Sounds great! Thanks for sharing. Happy Turning!
Great video... I have some black cherry trees lying in the field behind my house - they came down in a wind storm last winter. I've already limbed one of them and I'm getting ready to buck it up and put it on a pallet and under a tarp until spring.
Sounds like a great plan. You might want to split them length wise and remove the pith area to reduce stress as well. I'd cut the lengths a bit longer than the internal blanks also. That way you can trim off end, if cracks form and still have a clean bowl blank inside. All the best to you!
I love learning along with you! Gary
Thank you, so do I. LOL ;)
Really appreciate the detailed description of the process. An enjoyable and learning event. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you and Happy Turning!
Loved it, Kent, thank you. I tried a small laburnam box recently where I wish I’d heard and fully appreciated then your comment that it’s double the cut, so the lid is loose and moves far too much. I’m now going to try the lidded bowl and stop frequently to try the fit, at the risk of irritating myself by stopping over and over! Thanks and best (from Guildford, UK) Hugh
You can do it. Just take your time and be patient. All the best to you! Happy Turning!
As always, enjoyed this demo.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks and Happy Turning!
Beautiful bowl - I initially thought it would be a shame to ebonise such detailed cherry grain, but on seeing the end result it looks awesome! So I was given two spherical burls from a downed cherry tree - still very green. I’m considering making a lidded bowl with the biggest one and maybe a pot with the smaller. I only have a midi lathe with a 12” swing so it should be fun - never turned a burl so I’m excited! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience!
That sounds like a couple of great projects you have planned. Thanks and Happy Turning!
Very nice work thank you for sharing.
That's a beautiful little piece.
Thank you kindly
beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video. A lidded bowl is definitely on my list. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Happy Turning!
Beautiful bowl. Very inspiring.
Thank you very much!
I watched your previous perfect tenon video. Much more secure surface today. I wanted to make a lidded bowl next, thanks for this video too!
Fantastic! You can do it! Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Great job! Good luck!
Thank you!
well done on the lidded bowl, shapes compliment and the color contrast worked well too , thanks Kent.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you and Happy Turning!
Very very nice
Thanks a lot. Happy Turning!
Thanks Kent, awesome bowl and video. I’m about to try my first lidded bowl. I’ve turned about 20 bowls of various shapes so far.
Hope you enjoy! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Great looking bowl. Haven’t made a lid for a bowl yet but I plan to. Thanks for the great information.
Thanks for watching! Happy Turning!
Elegant design! And such a very instructional guide from a master craftsman. How much I still have to learn.
Thank you! You can do it! Happy Turning!
Hi kent Love this video I can't wait to try it and make by 1st lidded bowl.
As most of the trees did I'll be turning will be Aspen or pine I was wondering if you had any experience with these 2 trees. Pros and cons about them. Aspen seems to be a very soft wood And we have lots of access to free Aspen wood As I live in a national forests I can collect Them for almost free. I'm still in the beginning stages and still learning a friend of mine has been turning would for years and he does quite well selling Them. And hes been a good teacher but you should always learn for multiple people as they can give you insight in something someone could just not explain to you That clicks. In hence why I watch your videos. So any help is always appreciated
Sounds like a good plan. I have not turned aspen, but I know it can look beautiful. You also have many options for finishing and coloring aspen. Be sure the wood is dry or equalized before turning a lidded piece. See my microwave drying video for more details. Happy Turning!
I'm off to the workshop and yes I will be turning a Lidded cherry (English Cherry)bowl
Fantastic! All the best to you! Happy Turning!
Going to give it a go . Yours is delightful..
Excellent!!! Happy Turning!
nice bowl, and interesting technique for ebonizing, thanks for sharing... subscribed!
Thanks and welcome
Beautiful bowl, going to try. But one thing I don’t understand, why would anyone dislike it. Just saying, thanks for shop class.
Good question! LOL, there's always someone in the bunch LOL Happy Turning!
Beautiful. I'm learning so much from your videos. Thanks for your dedication to teaching the craft
You are so welcome. Thank you! Happy Turning!
That's a beautiful bowl! I'm fairly new to turning and have been looking for a good video of something just like that. I also really like the way you explain every step. Big thumbs up from me. Thank you :)
Awesome, thank you! My goal is to help you make the bowls you imagine. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I have easy wood tools but am trying to learn the ins and outs of traditional tools. I watched this video, went to my shop and use a 3/8" bowl gouge to turn the inside of a bowl that was on my lathe. Obviously, I've a very long way to go, but this is the first time I have truly felt comfortable with that tool in my hands. And no catches. Thanks.
That is awesome! I have a new Wood Bowl Turning eCourse coming soon. Stay Tuned! Happy Turning!
I'm just starting out wood turning, this project was fascinating and is extremely attractive. Thanks for the detail of description, really appreciate it.
Glad it was helpful! Enjoy and Happy Turning! Be sure to check out my website www.TurnAWoodBowl.com
Great instructional video. I’m going to give this a go. Ty
Hope you enjoy. Happy Turning!
That turned out really nicely! Always learn from you, thanks again and stay safe. Cheers from MT....
Thanks, you too! Happy Turning!
Great looking bowl. I really like your teaching style. I might even try a lidded bowl.
Go for it! Happy Turning!
Love the shape. I was hoping you would show how you did the parting cut before you let the blank dry as doing it with a parting tool is one you said to avoid (and one where I had a bad experience). Do you happen to have any video of that step. I’m curious on whether you did it as a peeling cut where you ride the bevel or more of a scraping cut.
I will try it!
Hope you like it! Happy Turning!
Nice!
Thanks!
Wow! Very cool to watch it all come together. I love all of the techniques you use and explain how to achieve them. This is on my list to learn. I have only done pens and other smaller things on my midi lathe. Subscribed and notification bell set. Now to go back through the library of videos and learn. Thank you!
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you subscribed. Welcome and Happy Turning!
Wonderful project that inspires me to make a lidded bowl. The complimentary shapes of the bowl and knob work well. Your close-up photography is terrific. Focus, composition and lighting are spot on. It looks like it was shot in a studio and it really demonstrates your techniques and dialog. I will check out your sanding video; that's an area I need improvement.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Much appreciated. Happy Turning!
Super cool
Thank you, Conrad!
Excellent video Kent. I'm certainly going to attempt a lidded bowl. I'm thinking that ash would be ideal for staining. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions and advice.
Sounds good, enjoy. Ash, is also good for ebonizing with a torch. Happy Turning!
Can you please do a video or tell me what ingredients you use and the portion size to make your beeswax and carnauba finish? Great work and enjoy the detail you give to make us all better turners
Yes I can, here you go ruclips.net/video/yQazOEwCPEg/видео.html
Each video is a new learned.
Thanks from Brazil. I hope to have some lessons with you personaly and It Is my dream
Happy to hear that! In the meantime, check out my brand new online eCourse "Wood Bowl Turning Start-to-Finish." Happy Turning, Kent turnawoodbowl.com/wood-bowl-turning-start-to-finish-online-ecourse/
Excellent video with great description of the process.
Glad it was helpful! Happy Turning!
Very complete Kent! Love this! I am working on a project like this with maple right now!
Sounds great! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Really enjoyed this video. Your running commentary is excellent. I'm just a beginner! Can I ask why you don't make the knob part of the bowl lid itself? Thanks.
Good question! You can (I do in another video) but with this bowl I didn't have enough material in the lid, plus this method allows me to see and shape the top curve best. Plus, making the knob separate lets you play with the knob design and get it exactly the way you'd like without messing up the lid. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Very nice project! I was working on something similar recently; I got the lid too thin and had a large chunk fly off. I was able to salvage the bowl! Thanks for the video.
Very cool! Thanks and Happy Turning!
I've now got to try and turn my first bowl I feel very inspired
Awesome! You got this. Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Very nice work, and interesting and useful video on the techniques. Personally I prefer just having the ebonized knob but would have left the bowl natural, but that's just me and I can see why you tried it like this as it does look pretty good.
Thanks for sharing. That would look nice too!
Hi Kent, beautiful result and nice instruction. I’m going to give it a try. I want to be sure I have a thick enough blank. Can you give me an idea of the ratio of width to height including the 2 tenons?
Yes it's about a 3 (wide) x 2 size ratio. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Kent. You’re a good teacher (not all turners are). I enjoyed watching the process, but all the more because you were teaching and explaining as you went. Yup. I AM inspired to turn a lidded bowl or box AND doing them in different hues, as you did. Coming up for me will be a figured maple bowl with an African Blackwood rim, and maybe a thin layer of cherry between.
I appreciate that. Wow, those wood combinations sounds amazing!!! ENJOY! Happy Turning!
Thanks for another great vid. Is there a reason why you didn't turn a tenon on the knob instead of using a dowel?
good question, Paul. The dowel technique allows me the freedom to try a few different knobs if needed. Plus, it's easier to apply the two different finishes without bleeding them together. Happy Turning!
Thanks for the video John Locke (Lost)
LOL! You are welcome!
Do you ever use a vacuum chuck rather than a jam chuck?
Yes, occasionally, but the jam chuck usually works better.
Nice bowl! I knows it's a boring ?? but would like your input on the lathe you have, down to that one or a Vicmar. Want a fixed head stock for my next/ last lathe.
My lathe is a Robust Sweet 16. I recommend it or the Robust American Beauty, both fine lathes.
I love what you did here ,awesome. Do you get your wood free
Yes I do! All of it! Takes some hunting at times, but there's plenty around! Happy Turning!
Good video, well presented. I think you need to adjust the tenon size as your Chuck jaws are too open and not holding the wood in the optimal position, ie a circle.
You are correct. It was one of those occasional exceptions made. ;)
Hey Mike, I knew someone was going to catch that. LOL Yes, the parting tool is a no-no with side-grain mounted blanks. What I did was part a little ways in and then widen the path with a second part. That way the parting tool doesn't grab as much, but it was still not very smooth. I still don't recommend parting tools on side-grain blanks. Happy Turning!
Looks great! I’m going to try a lidded bowl on my next project. Thanks for the video!
Sounds great! Thank you and Happy Turning!
The work is beautiful!!!! In the summer I sharpened a similar one from an Apple tree. The Apple tree was dry, but it was still a little bent! Do you have a cherry that won't bend?
The key to not bending is to thoroughly dry the rough turned blank.
Hi Kent! You often talk about using a detail spindle gouge to shape the tenon. What angle should that gouge be. I currently have two ⅜" spindle gouges both with a 50° bevel that I'd like to make one of them a sharper bevel angle for fine detail work. What do you suggest? Thanks!
I sharpen and shape that tool by hand so it's not as precise as my bowl gouges. And I make it much steeper to get into that inside corner. I'd say it's closer to 40°. Happy Turning!
Excellent instructional video and as usual a great finished product. What’s your take on a vacuum chuck? I haven’t seen you use one yet.
Vacuum chucks are good, but don't work on all woods and take awhile to set-up. The jam chuck is so quick, I usually go that route. Thanks. Happy Turning!
