One sad fact, people under 30 years old don't have a clue who half the actors are. The talent, and vast number of well known actors of that time can never be duplicated. SIDE NOTE. As many here have said, about this movie, It is my all time favorite movie of all time. s
Rochester was the other cab driver. He drove jack Benny for years. I guess he had to take on a part time job since mr. Benny was so tight with his money lol
This is my "Life Movie." I saw it new in 1963. I own 3 copies of it. One on a huge DVD disc, a VHS and a Blue Ray DVD. I must of watched this movie 30 times if not 50. It was funny, original, no swearing, left much to the imagination and cleverly done. It is a classic for sure.
I wonder how much the stunt man made hanging on to the car door and how many takes it took - that is one of the funniest and best stunts in the entire film. "Holy Mackerel - I almost didn't make it" is a great line.
Ethel Merman smacking everyone with that enormous white purse! .. “YOU SHUT UP!.. WE’RE GONNA GET THAT MONEY! KEEP DRIVING!” then falling on her butt at the end!.. legs kicking in that girdle!.. greatest comedy of all time!

Funniest movie ever .good clean humor. I work in a school with student, I've watched this movie many time I some times act like the cast members in this movie and the students laugh and love it. That kind of humor makes a great student. God bless them always. Amen
Why this car chase doesn't go down as one of the best ever filmed is beyond me. The fact that these cars are (by today's standards) so dangerous to drive this way makes this such a harrowing scene --and yet so fun to watch! A real nail-biter. SUCH A GREAT MOVIE!
Just a mention, if you watch the part again where they're going down an alley and a gentleman jumps out of the way by a fraction of a second. Remarkable stunt work.✌️
I lived in Long Beach when they made the pic. It's the way I'll always remember it. My Mom got us tickets for the night after the premiere at the Cinerama Dome.
Oh yes - they cut a bigger scene he was more integral to in editing :(. And i recognize his gesticulations after the cabs drove off as classic silent movie emoting, Keaton style.
Which means that Mickey Rooney, Buster Keaton, William Demarest, Jesse White, Peter Falk, and Jonathan Winters also Guest Starred on "The Twilight Zone!"😉🎤🎥📺B.W.
The great Buster Keaton star of silent film days is on full display with his body antics when the cabs are leaving the boat house and he's trying to guide them out and panics .........
The best scene in this movie, among many priceless scenes, is when Jonathan Winters destroys that prim little service station in the middle of the desert. "I think we're gonna have to kill him."
It’s hilarious how he’s stumbling around from right to left and back again, even long after the cars are gone, still totally confused by what just happened. 😂
So many big-name stars that put their personal egos aside to make an all-time great comedy movie. Not trying to up-stage each other. And I bet they had a blast doing it, wonder if there was any bloopers ever recorded & available. It should be shown on re-run TV more often so young people of today can see true acting, directing, & production talent, not zombies / sci-fi tech films / super heros / & medieval warlord freak shows.
Una película maravillosa, excelente comedia y con un elenco de categoría. Tengo 70 años y la vi en el cine y luego (muchas veces) en DVD. Divertidísima.
I totally salute Culpepper and Finch for doing what they did to Mrs Marcus! She got what she deserved! I also salute Pike for trying to throw her out of the tow truck and Benjy for making her slip in the banana peel!
Every time see this, now lucky on DVD, indeed this remains & IS the BEST COMEDY EVER!! So many talented actors all gone now but live forever in this movie!!! So many favourites in scenes can't pick just one! Amongst them is early on is their group discussion along the road trying unsuccessfully how to fairly divide up the 350thou Gs is tremendous! Well after " 17ways...." the race & comedy insanity begins for ALL of us to totally enjoy every minute!! Thanks to all involved to enrich our lives!! Bravo & Cheers!!
The best chase moments were the beginning of them chasing the captain at the merchant location when he told the cabbies back it up and they chased. Him in the alley THATS SOME SPEED THATS GETS YOU THERE FAST
This movie was made in 1963 the same year Pres Kennedy was killed. I was a 10 yr old and laugh just as hard now as I did back then. It was nice to laugh as the world did so much crying over loss of JFK
Came out November 7th, 1963, just two weeks before JFK was assassinated on November 22nd, 1963. World was mad and a lot of sadness. We've not ever been the same since the assassination.

A truly great and whacky film which made it such fun. Only just realised that the manny at the garage on the foreshore was Buster Keaton - ! 😁

It's a shame he had such little screen time, since much of it was removed from the final cut.

Jack Benny got 'tole' by Ethel Merman earlier.

Stanley Kramer at his best, as all in his movies. Spencer Tracey is outstanding.
I love when Peter Falk yells "don't make me nervous, just don't make me nervous!" while driving a crowded cab at 90 mph.

Great footage of downtown Long Beach, California in 1963 including the old pontoon bridge (4:25) and the horseshoe drive loop off of Ocean Blvd.

I love the whole movie, and have for decades! The car chase is still fairly good, except for those faked interior shots that were so common back then.
