    Been playing chess 40 years-- only starting to REALLY understand chess in the last 5-10 years... I like your videos and Silman's books are good; your demo board out in the sunshine and beautiful scenery as a backdrop are fantastic!

    You're really sharing Silman's imbalances AND their usefulness in a beneficial way to the listener.
    May I tell you, I had Reassess your Chess for quite sometime. NOW I want to understand these. YOU are providing the door into this subject in a way that I can undertand, and put this knowledge into my head to use it. How to use this to SEE the board, that is the crucial bit for me. How the opponents must have a different plan. I'm very grateful to you, thank you.

    Great discourse, Backyard Professor. Just noted that this video was done years ago. I will be looking at your other videos. I bought IM Jeremy Silman's book "The Reassess Your Chess Workbook" but never finished reading it. You have inspired me to resume the reading. Cheers to you.

    I'm really glad you made these imbalance videos. I DO have Silman's book, but one of the first things he says is it is for use for someone rated 1500 or higher, and I'm not quite there yet and felt a little discouraged. Perhaps it is time I start diving into it again!

    You know, honestly teachers in chess schools are not as good as you when it comes to explaining carefully with detailed explanation for chess students, ESPECIALLY for beginners. You have such a talent of anticipating Silman's point of view on different elements of the chess game as well as coordinating with your OWN experience as well. That is just perfect, because you don't only follow what the book says but you also connect your experience with it. Chess schools would LOVE to have you :)

    HI Kerry!! When i watched the crush your opponent video, you mention Jon and George. When you described George as the guy who would pick up his pieces and slam them down it got me thinking. So i did some research. Turns out the 2 guys you mention used to be at my chess club here in Wyoming. George was always fun to play with. Dr. Jon and Barb were an inspiration to us all. Good luck on your journey to Master. I am currently at 1630 and want to be a Master too! Let them know Joe says HI

    You are very kind, and I appreciate the encouraging words. I know I have all kinds of "experts" who think this is all a waste of time, but I know better. In showing how a typical normal guy can use Silman and improve his Chess, I find great pleasure and satisfaction in that. But to also SHARE this? That to me is called LIVING! GRIN! I have a LOT more I am going to produce, I promise.

  • @noblecause

    Anyway, I just recently discovered the " T.V .Chess" videos here and watched a few of them-- Karpov, Browne, Seirawan, etc. battling it out for a money prize-- and their commentary on their individual games sounds exactly like what alot of us players do-- calculate tactics; notice positional factors present and future; and they do the "if he goes there, then I will do this" pretty much through the entire game. So I still think calculating deeply and accurately is the key to the game!

    At 8:50, white can aggressively exploit the weakness on the king side with Q to h5 (check). If black defends reflexively with pawn to g6, white takes g6 with the bishop (check), and black can't take the bishop with h7 cos he would then lose his rook. So black moves king to f8, letting white either take the h pawn, or bring in the other bishop to g5, or advance his knight to f3. In this scenario, black is down 1 or 2 pawns, he's lost the ability to castle, and finds his king on an open file with 2 or 3 white pieces already threatening a checkmate scenario... White can also go on with Qf3 (check), forcing black to move knight to f6 and lose it to the white e pawn.
    If however after Qh5 black knows better than defending with g7 and moves king to f8, he still faces trouble: king on open file, can't castle and may lose the h pawn.
    What would you guys think about this?

    • @ziyadshafeek
      @ziyadshafeek 8 лет назад

      Yes after Qh5 + g6 bishop takes pawn, pawn takes pawn and then there goes the rook and knight on g8 as after Qh5 check, g6, bxg6 check, hxg6, Qxh8 and Kf8 the only way to defend the knight, it is mate in 3 after Bh6+, Kf7, Qg7+ Ke8 and mate by qf8.

    • @KARTIKEYA007
      @KARTIKEYA007 8 лет назад

      After Qh5+ and Kf8.. white can play Ne2, looking to castle. Black is lost as he will have to give up a piece to avoid checkmate

    Yes, there is nothing wrong with attacking..... when the board says to that is...... on the other hand, Silman's ideas of creating targets are fascinating reading and learning.I will also be producing videos on those views in more videos, once I get through the general ideas of the imbalances.....

    Thank you for making this videos. I bought a Silman book (Reassess your Chess) and I find it very interesting.
    Something I am disturbed by is that Mr. Silman usually draws his games, which I don't like. I have stopped reading his book and trying to forget what I learned from Him. I don't want to draw my games, I want to Win as much as I can. Therefore I am reading Kotov's book.

    I'm not trying to be snarky because I understand that this is an example game but what if early on, Black just pushed f6 and just let the pawns duke it out? Wouldn't that have been a little less painful? BTW, I really like Silman's books. I also love watching your videos and wish to thank you for them. It's a lot of work that is to be commended. By the way, do you use a lav mic (wireless) or is that nat (natural) audio? Sounds really good. Thanks again.

  • @KnightOfTheGoods

    I know this video is very old but I have a question that I hope somebody can answer. Why, at 18:06, after just explaining that white's imbalance is that he has two knights versus black's single knight, does he choose to immediately sacrifice a knight for a bishop and make the material exactly equal? This seems spoil his win condition in my view.

    What a great statement: "the guys at the tournament don't carry around Silman's copy". Of course not, they would be disqualified looking at books during a Tournament.
    ...btw, before questioning a hair cut (which is a personal issue anyway), looking in a mirror first might be eye-opening. Not really bringing anything to the table chess wise as well.

    Silman's ideas conflict with the hyper- modern openings for black, such as the Pirc defense and the King Indian Defense, as Black with these openings is inviting White to demonate the centre of the board. And then countering with an attack with the minor pieces, on White's central pawn dominance.
