An awful lot of people made fun at the time of Marisa Tomei winning the best supporting actress Oscar. There was even a rumor circulated that it was a mistake. This movie still stands up today and she totally deserved the award.
Marissa Tomei was a total unknown at the time. The director was blown away by her taped audition and wanted to cast her, but the studio was insisting on a name actress. As a last ditch effort, the director showed the tape to Pesci.. and Joe was equally blown away and also insisted in having Tomei, so the studio gave in. And then she won an Oscar for her performance.
And sadly she hasn't done much since then, other than the MCU stuff lately. She's extremely talented but she either chooses bad scripts to take on, or her agent(s) do that same thing for her. I mean she's been in some great movies other than MCV, aka The Wrestler spings to mind right off the bat (should have gotten an oscar for that one also imo).
@@giles852002 Yes, yes she was. As a life long wrestling fan, that movie holds a special place in my not-heart for several reasons. Her portrayal of that character was one of those reasons. She was superb in it. I think she was better in The Wrestler than she was in MCV tbh, but at least she won the oscar for MCV lol
Fun fact: the Director Jonathan Lynn actually has a law degree and insisted the film's legal proceedings be realistic. In fact, many attorneys and law professors have praised the film for its accurate depiction of trial strategy and courtroom procedure, especially with regards to presenting expert witnesses at trial. In fact, the film has been screened at some law schools to illustrate courtroom procedures
The great irony being that Rudy Giuliani (supposedly a lawyer) used the film to support his crackpot voter fraud assertions but couldn't even manage to correctly remember that the old woman couldn't see properly because she needed thicker glasses.
"Now.... the 2 defendants...." pauses for dramatic effect and dirty look from the judge. It's so brilliantly well done that I was in stitches even watching the version with curse words dubbed over.
She's even too perfect looking here, I much prefer her in some of the later roles where - not that she ever looks old - her age is starting to show ever so slightly. ;) Like in What Women Want, The Wrestler, or Captain America: Civil War. Those movies span 15 years, so it's safe to say she's got them magic genes.
One of the urban legends of the Oscars is that she didn't actually win, but the presenter for some reason accidentally (not intentionally) said Marisa's name, and the show never corrected it.
A very under-rated movie. I dare say criminally under-rated. Every character was cast perfectly, and so well acted that you never struggle to maintain the suspension of disbelief. You don't need flashy FX, and a set of A-list stars to make a fantastic movie.
The sleep gag is concluded when Vinny realizes that prison is actually the only place he can sleep since being from NYC, it has a din going at all times while rural Alabama has silence pierced by sudden, unexpected activities of noise.
Classic '90s comedy. It's always so exciting when a comedic role wins an Oscar, because so many genres get overlooked by the "Academy". Comedy is challenging, and anyone who disagrees can meet me in the pit. 😉
The Karate Kid revival is one of the best written revivals out there. I wont spoil it for ya but its definitely worth a watch after seeing Karate Kid. So well done by all involved.
@@keithferris9574 Its now the benchmark on how revivals should be done. Pays homage to the original yet remains unique to itself. Disney needs to take notes.
20:50 "I wouldn't go as far as to say the judge was _unfair..."_ He was, when he denied an objection he acknowledged was sound and well-argued. But by that point, he'd lost patience with Vinny's disrespectful/ignorant behavior, so.... Lesson: don't piss off your judge.
This is one of my dad's favorite movies. When we used to do road trips across the country, we had this small tv in the car that played VHS tapes. This was one of the films that we played every single road trip. Holds some good memories.
Shan, I was born, raised and live in Alabama. This movie is one of my favorite films. I love all the funny references to grits in the movie. Grits are a southern staple food that other regions of the country are. sadly, deprived of, so all the references are just funny to me. Another thing the director did right was capture the southern attitude towards the "big shot lawyer" as well as the charming, yet dramatic southern lawyer style. Most of the actors actually pulled off a decent southern accent as well. Though a little over emphasized not that far from accurate. I also appreciate that the film did not make the good people of Alabama look like a bunch of complete morons who are all married to their cousins, as the common stereotype portrays, but depicted us as charmingly simple but of decent morality ie. the witnesses were mistaken with their testimony, but none were portrayed to be vindictive, lying or just plain stupid.(not withstanding the witness with the dirty screens) I am glad you did this movie, and love your insights and commentary. Keep the content coming. Peace.
The sketch with the 'two yoots' was a conversation that actually happened between the Director and Pesci, they realised that they had to include it in the movie. The scene with Vinny sleeping in the prison was that due to the rioting it sounded like home unlike all the unfamiliar sounds of the country so he was able to sleep through it perfectly. On the DVD bloopers reel there was an alternate panning shot of Vinny sleeping like a baby wherein as it reaches his torso Pesci is clutching the oscar he had just won for Goodfellas.
The scene when the lawyer starts stuttering was so funny to film, that the director had to hide because he couldn’t stop laughing; you can also see Joe Pesci and “the two yuts” laughing as well 😂
And the actor actually does have a stutter. Slightly exaggerated of course. But the actor Austin Pendleton didn't want to do that scene. He was nervous as hell.
I don't care what people say, Maris Tomei *EARNED* that Oscar for her performance, especially her final testimony and "The defence is wrong" bit. it's not often we see that range of emotions in a comic routine, and she hit it out of the ballpark!
Marisa Tomei won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for this movie. This was her real breakout role. Prior to this, she was probably best known for being a supporting character in the TV show A Different World (which was a Cosby Show spin-off with Lisa Bonet).
They did a great job of keeping the key points of the trial in everyone's mind so that when Vinny finally busts the case open it is easy for the audience to follow what is happening.
I enjoy your reviews. Your laughter is infectious and your technical expertise with regard to filmmaking shows. That being said, Marisa Tomei was a highlight for me. Sure, her character was beautiful, but she she was SMART as well. Love that.
I believe this was the last film role for Fred Gwynne, who played the judge, before his death. He was best known for his role as Herman Munster in the TV series "The Munsters".
Hey nice reaction to one of my favorite movies. I just wanted to say something about your review on why they had to move to 5 different hotels. Being from (Brooklyn) like the characters were, they was not use to the sounds in the south. New York is loud because of people yelling and screaming, dogs barking, cats meowing, ambulance sirens, whereas country noises are farm animals like pigs, Owls, crickets are more louder. The trains are different as well because trains go bye people homes on a more constancy basis no horn but south has a whistle that blows so the contrast is different. Vinny got sleep and more comfortable when he was in jail and there was a riot going on because that felt more like his element.
The "Public Defender" was Austin Pendleton, a fav character actor and if you want to see him at his best, you should react to "What's Up Doc," 1972, also starring Barbra Streisand, Ryan O'Neal, Madeline Kahn and Kenneth Mars. Possibly one of the funniest movies ever made.
I think this film hits the mark and delivers on all channels. It’s meant to be a lighthearted comedy and that’s exactly what it is. It’s one of my favorite films that no matter when it’s on I can watch it all the way through..
I saw this movie a long time ago (and enjoyed it). But watching your reaction just now makes me wonder for the first time why this never got a sequel. After all, it was a success, and it wouldn't be that difficult to simply create another case for Pesci's character to solve.
I'm glad you enjoyed this movie, Shan. As someone born and raised in New York City, I knew a lot of guys who sounded, and sometimes acted, just like Vinny. I was even married to one for a time. And also was friends with a lot of girls just like Marisa Tomei's character growing up. Very Brooklyn. By the way, the reason you haven't seen Marisa in many movies is because her career was derailed by Harvey Weinstein after she refused his advances. He had her blackballed as difficult to work with. As for Vinny's character, while he may be inexperienced in practicing law, I like the way the director shows that Vinny is no slouch when it comes to street-smarts. The way he handles the guy who owes his fiance money, is perfectly New York. Show me the money and make it worth my while. Anyway, while it may be a very simple comedy, My Cousin Vinny is one of my favorite movies of all time. The jokes never get old. Especially, "What's a grit?" I remember asking something similar when I move to the Midwest.
You MUST SEE Oscar, with Sylvester Stallone & Tim Curry, directed by John Landis, and The Paper, with Michael Keaton (& an all-star cast), directed by Ron Howard. Both have Marisa Tomei in her prime. Thanks for another great reaction/ review.

A love letter to New York Italo-American culture. Tomei, Pesci, and Macchio are all Italo-Americans. And they really did play Italo-Americans in the film. Tomei, from Brooklyn, said that if she talked in that dialect around her mother, her mother would have had a fit.
Not sure if you caught this, but I didn't hear you mention it during or even after the movie. After not getting any sleep moving hotel to hotel, Vinny actually Wants to stay in Jail instead of being bailed out. And You can see him getting some well needed rest even with all the ruckus in the background. He even smiles 13:05. And is full of energy the next scene.
Slums of Beverly Hills is a funny little indie gem with Tomei. I also liked her a lot in The Wrestler. The Wrestler is awesome in general. What a comeback for Rourke.
It's a funny scene, but slightly spoiled for me by the fact that screech owls don't really sound like that. In fact "screech owl" is a bit of a misnomer. Source: I live in a cabin in the woods in Alabama.
I think the story being so straight forward and simple allows for more character development and the acting of the two main characters to shine through. It’s a testament to the actors when a movie simple like this with with a dime a dozen court room story and small budget can make a film stand the test of time!
I have a feeling that the writers started by writing a totally believable trial scrip, with advice from real lawyers providing an accuracy check. Then, using that as an outline, they added in the humorous business with Pesci and Tomei. The result was a knockdown hilarious comedy within an impeccable legal story. On the side note: The suit was a wedding tuxedo in a style that was very popular in the nineteen sixties and seventies. I watched three reviewers, and none of them recognized the style. It was, at the time it was fashionable, totally inappropriate anywhere outside of a wedding chapel, and the owner or renters would only worn it once in their entire lifetime. To those of us old enough to remember the style, it was an instant laugh, because at no time in history was a tux like that ever worn in a courtroom, let alone being worn by a lawyer in a murder trial. Fred Gwynne was old enough to remember the style and must have had a heck of a time keeping a straight face during that scene. It was a sign of what a really great actor he was. Reviewers do him a great disservice by passing over his outstanding performance in this film. He was the only straight man in a cast of comedians, and he carried his part off with just the right level of dignity.
I've only watched it once, so I can't really go in depth. But off hand, Cobra Kai S1's greatest strength was that it not only exceded my expectations, but completely blew them away, which made it very addictive.

This movie never gets old. Seen it 1000x The New York vs Southern culture clash was also very well done. MCV was actually made into a Vegas musical. I don't know if it is still playing there or not
My absolute favorite Marisa Tomei performance of all time is in the little known 1991 movie Oscar, starring Sylvester Stalone. It is a farce, so slapstick comedy set in prohibition era NYC with Sly as "Snaps" Provolone, a successful gangster attempting to go straight. Marisa plays his daughter. It's hilarious, amazing art direction and stellar performances of many supporting actors. Marisa is amazing, her accent especially.
Hey man, what's up? This is a funny movie. The scene with judge and Pesci is hilarious. "The two what? The two youths." Lol! He asked him or someone else, "What's a youth?"
@SWM I loved your reaction to this movie. Didn’t intend on subscribing to anymore reaction channels, but I love the lineup of movies you have. You just got yourself another subscriber.
I always get a kick out of seeing the late Fred Gwynne in this movie. He played "Herman Munster" in the series "The Munsters" and had such a hard time with having been typecast in that role.
One thing I think that is overlooked in this movie is that there really isn't a villain, except the coincidences. The prosecutor doesn't hide evidence, there is no hidden agendas, or even any outright lying by witnesses. Everyone involved is on the level.
Actually, this movie is well quoted by US trial attorneys and is widely seen as a great send up of the US trial system, but true enough to life that it makes for a heartwarming resolution.
One of my favourite Joe Pesci films is the 1997 film "Gone Fishin'". He and Danny Glover play grown up childhood friends going on their annual fishing trip. It's a hilarious road movie which I recommend for you to watch.
Marisa Tomei was in The Toxic Avenger Director's Cut. Troma movies are an acquired taste, they're very low budget horror. Troma brought us classic schlock like the Class of Nuke 'Em High series, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Surf Nazis Must Die! and Cannibal! The Musical.
I can absolutely confirm that the Karate Kid TV Show "Cobra Kai" is in fact fantastic. 3rd season is coming out in January. Definitely give it a watch when you get some free time. It's really top notch 😊

Tormei won an Oscar for this role
Lane Smith...R.I.P. "You're not even a has-been. You're a never-was." -Coach Reilly
The scene where they argue over the faucet dripping gets me every time..
I loved Fred Gwynne. He played Herman Munster in the old series and was very solid in Disorganized Crime alongside a whole slew of well known actors.
I've only watched it once, so I can't really go in depth. But off hand, Cobra Kai S1's greatest strength was that it not only exceded my expectations, but completely blew them away, which made it very addictive.
I seem to be commenting quite often on your reviews but you just keep picking great movies. Before I watched your video... I knew that you were going to like it. I started laughing before I even clicked play. Lol. Good luck on your channel. I'm looking forward to your future film choices!!
Thank you so so much Todd. I hope you enjoy the review :)
I definitely did and I know I will like the others. I'm going to have to become a patron. You know all of the ins and outs of filming and it shows on your reviews. Thanks for taking the time it takes to edit and upload vids. I know it's a time consuming process and not many folks get the thanks that is so very much deserved. Take care Brother!
You too bro! Stay safe!
I’m also a fan of Marissa Tomei’s parents’ work...
😂😂😂
Just rewatched this movie last night. A timeless classic comedy.
Fun fact - Joe Pesci released a comedy/spoken word album in the 90s based on this character, Vincent Gambini.
I rented this on vhs when it came out, kept it for like a whole week it was that good. And Marisa Tomei is gods gift to man.
Yes, cobra kai is awesome!
Marisa Tomei - one of the best actresses.
And Herman Munster (or Fred Gwynne) is also great as a judge in this movie.
This is kinda a cult favourite of mine. Growing up I really just thought of pesci as a comedy actor because of this and home alone.
And the lethal Weapons
Hey man, what's up? This is a funny movie. The scene with judge and Pesci is hilarious. "The two what? The two youths." Lol! He asked him or someone else, "What's a youth?"
Hahaha what's a Yut?
"Yoots"
This movie is a perfect example of why you NEVER talk to the cops if they want to question you.
Genuinely look forward to your vids. Honest, educated reactions.
Thank you so so much Den E!
that actor you recognized from “entourage” was also in “Dances With Wolves.”
That was a great movie review from you. I honestly loved watching this movie.
Marisa Tomei is just wonderful in this funny movie.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Marisa Tomei
The episode of Seinfeld with Marisa in it is a classic!
One of my favourite Joe Pesci films is the 1997 film "Gone Fishin'". He and Danny Glover play grown up childhood friends going on their annual fishing trip. It's a hilarious road movie which I recommend for you to watch.
Every so often a Really good movie comes along...and this is certainly one of them 🤗💕
Marisa Tomei was in The Toxic Avenger Director's Cut. Troma movies are an acquired taste, they're very low budget horror. Troma brought us classic schlock like the Class of Nuke 'Em High series, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Surf Nazis Must Die! and Cannibal! The Musical.
Also check out,
Jimmy Hollywood (Joe Pesci)
The Public Eye (Joe Pesci)
The Public Eye is criminally overlooked. A great noir film and super emotionally impactful.
Raging Bull and Good Fellas
One of those movies that if I see it playing on tv, I drop everything to watch it. Love the reaction, and that you enjoyed it ❤
I can absolutely confirm that the Karate Kid TV Show "Cobra Kai" is in fact fantastic. 3rd season is coming out in January. Definitely give it a watch when you get some free time. It's really top notch 😊
This is one of those movies that sneaks up on you with how good it actually is, I remember being very pleasantly surprised at the quality...
The Irishman will be a classic in 20 years. It was beautifully done.
This movie made me absolutely bonkers for Marisa.
I love your channel dude. One of the most informed and focussed reactors on here. Please do Trainspotting if you haven't seen it.
Marisa Tomei is soooo beautiful in this movie!
