People. Don't be stingy with the Thumbs Up
It's free. And helps Mark whom provides great stuff here. 🙂
Thanks man!
You are right about "What is and what should never be", it is a gem.. It is richly textured with a blend of jazz chords mixed with hard rock and slide blues licks..
Yes, that slide solo is really beautiful as well. I love the whole song still today!
Add to the above that Zep really knew how to use dynamics, as demonstrated here in the "soft" verse and "agressive" chorus. I can't think of any other hard rock band that perfected this like Led Zeppelin. And Robert Plant had the perfect voices for both.
This is actually the first song I learned from Led Zeppelin. Still playing it at 63 yrs old. Thanks Mark.
That's awesome!
I love Zeppelin so much I've learned all of Jimmy's and of Joan Paul's stff and been playing for so long. Jimmy's the best. Led Zeppelin II is my favorate album I think for the bass and guitar stuff
Thanks Mark - your enthusiasm for Zeppelin, is rekindling my own love from my childhood for the band and, as a guitarist, especially Lord Page of the Riff. Such a great song rhythmically and musically that brings together intrinsically simple ingredients, like a great Italian chef, into a satisfying whole that somehow excites the musical taste buds. Magical :)
Thanks so much!! Glad you're digging the videos!
Well done Mark! What always struck me about this song was the whacky panning on the final guitar riff, coupled with the outrageous Gong. Truly original stuff.
Thanks!
If i remember correctly that classic Page riff at the end would pan left and right in the speakers creating an even cooler sound effect
Yes, it pans left and right. I think Dazed and Confused does too at a couple of points.
They say that Joe Walsh told Jimmy that he needed a '58 Les Paul besides his dragon Tele. Jimmy agreed, so Joe sold Jimmy one of his '58s. (Believe it or not.)
Long been one of my favorites, just a great guitar song with a lot of guitar things going on in it. Intriguing that they threw the album together in fits and starts while touring the first album.
Great insights to a legendary guitarist, Mark!
Thanks so much!!
Something from my childhood and just learning days. 13 or so years old
Thanks Markie. 🙂
My pleasure Embree!
The last riff, played over Bonham's incredible drumming, is my favourite bit of Led Zep. The version for the BBC sessions is stellar.
Yeah, plus Plant's vocal at the end is great. Total team effort from Zep on this one!
Great lesson Mark, thank you. I need to go back and re-learn this song. You've given me insight and inspiration.
So glad you enjoyed the video!
You remind me of my Guit-fiddle teacher in High School (1978-80). I gave him my Wall-sized Led Zep poster before I left to college and he said it made him the most popular teacher on campus.
I can imagine it did work that way. Thanks George.
Very cool to hear the isolated guitar parts. You got the Jimmy tone. Yes I wish I had this lesson when I was a teenager obsessed with led Zeppelin and no RUclips. Trying to figure out Led Zeppelin from music books was impossible 😖
Thanks! And yes, I wore out the needle of my turntable and went through a couple of copies of LZ I and II - so many great songs on those albums!
"I love how you called the toggle switch, cover a "Poker Chip." hahaha
Great lesson on this great classic. There's many reasons that I've said for many years "Jimmy Page" is the greatest guitar player of all time.
Even though they stole 26 tunes. He does so many different tunings, and his technic's were miles above others of his day. I personally liked his original tunes better that the one's he stole. Like "10 Years Gone" "No Quarter" and many others. But IMO he owned everything he lifted. Many of his tunes are quite complicated too. You did an awesome job touching on these technics. Thanks Mark. Peace.. Joe
Thanks a ton Joe!
Definitely one of my favorites! Well played Mark!! Cheers 💥🐉💥♥️👏👏👏👋🖤🦋🖤
Thank you Kris!
💛🎵💛🎶💛damn right‼️‼️‼️big LedZep-Gem and 1 of my favorites...what a beatiful riffs‼️😋‼️
Rock on!
Snap! Right on the money of tunes I want to learn by LZ!
Yeah!!
Wow I've never paid much attention to this song. Has a lot of "guitar tricks" this will be a great song to learn.. thank you Mark 👍 there is so much to learn from classic rock!
You bet! This is definitely a great one to learn.
1:36 "cue the gong." laughed out loud. another great vid of a great song
Thanks!
It may sound crazy to say this but LZ2 could be one of the most underrated albums of all time.
If it's below #1 of all time ... then maybe! LOL! Love it for sure. It's one of my top of the top - amongst the albums I won't choose between.
Nice one matey.
Thanks David!
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful weekend Mark ❤😊
Thank you! You too!
Ever notice how few songs from Presence and In Through the Outdoor is covered by Zep tribute bands?
Yes, it's probably because they aren't that well-known and popular. Plus, "All of My Love" is sort of uncharacteristic for Zeppelin and "Fool in the Rain" is freaking difficult! (Same for a couple off of Presence.)
@@MarkZabel Achilles Last Stand is pretty wacky too!
Thanks!
Wow, thank you Kris! Really appreciate it.
@@MarkZabel Love hearing you play Jimmy Page!! Cheers Mark✨️💥🐉💥
I gutted my Deluxe pups and put in full size DiMatzio Super Distortion. 😀
Oh no! That's sacrilege! You've gotta do what you've gotta do though, right?
Hey Mark, in thoroughly enjoy your program but of uncovered something I never knew and I just like to share it with you about John Bonham. That there was a song that he simply refused to try to play at any concert because it took way too much concentration. Remember the song Dyer maker and John Bonham would not play that song in concert just thought I'd share that with you Mr Mark an interesting fact
Interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Cool ❤
Thank you!
Interesting detail re: Whole Lotta Love riff, which is often missed. Page slightly bends the second note (D) on the fifth fret, simultaneously playing the open D string. Same notes, but with the slight bend, it creates a tiny bit of dissonance in the riff. Usually not transcribed that way. Can’t remember where I came across that but think it was an old guitar magazine interview with Page where he shared it.
Yep, you'll see (and hear) that's what I'm doing in the video. I need to bend upward (toward the ceiling) to avoid blocking the open D string. That bit of dissonance is so cool!
@@MarkZabel I played it for years not knowing that. I love those little things that when you find out, it’s like “whoa…that’s it!l”
Ha ! THAT was the First one that came to mind ...
But mainly because I'm a Bass Player first and a Thin Stringer second 😉
My introduction to Led Zeppelin was Led Zeppelin I.
Quite by accident though.
I took my pocket money to town to buy Led Zeppelin II but all the record stores were sold out of it, so I bought "I" instead.
A very different album.
I just got home from playing a show playing tons of zeppelin and classic rock. The bar does more acoustic folks country stuff. I played good, but they didn't like me lol. Any advice mark about shows that are stinkers lol? I love what is and what..... nice choice
Oh man ... I don't know. It may be that the crowd was looking for Jim Croce and you pulled out "The Immigrant Song". Getting what the audience wants is the main thing to having a show that's enjoyed - with everyone singing along or dancing. Also, making sure YOU'RE having a good time up there.
you played in Nashville I take it?
Alright Mark.. you’re my guitar teacher.
Awesome!
I always have been s Mixo player. 🙂
Born "Mixo-ed up"??? LOL! Just kidding brother.
I watch the Ada. HTH
People ..Comment
IT HELPS
Hey Mark how about showing how to play ramble on by Zeppelin?
Great suggestion!
The main riff....the first few bars remind me of Stranglehold, by Ted Nugent.
Yes, Ted may have been influenced by it.
🙇♂️💓🍀🎶 🤘😃🎸
I believe they got sued on the Lemon Song.
Interesting. Didn't know that. They must not have originally given credit to Wolf.
@@MarkZabel It was based on Killing Floor. From Wikipedia: “In December 1972, Arc Music, owner of the publishing rights to Howlin' Wolf's songs, sued Led Zeppelin for copyright infringement on "The Lemon Song". The parties settled out of court. Though the amount was not disclosed, Howlin' Wolf received a check for US$45,123 from Arc Music immediately following the suit, and subsequent releases included a co-songwriter credit for him.”
Firebird Pickups?
More or less. They tried these "new mini humbuckers" in 2012. I love 'em.
