That is a very sound interpretation. Although i incline myself more into atharism i also appreciate Asha'arism and Maturidis. Alhamdulillah... These are all ijtihad of our noble scholars in the classical eras. And we do not have to fight over it. Remember that Almighty Allah is the limit of all that could be known... No imagination or knowledge can fully grasp the Absolute, the infinite Eternal Being (Allah).

@Shofixti6163 the distinction between the 3 theological schools of sunnis are very very THIN. let us not highlight the small differences and magnify what makes us all Muslims.
“There’s no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”.
It just so happened that the first 2 generations of Muslims after the time of the Prophet (peace br upon him) didn’t have the same questions that was faced by our classical scholars have from philosophers and other religious traditions.

    Assalamualaikum Ustadh,
May Allah reward you for all the great work you are doing and may He put barakah in it.
I did have a question though, I’ve always wondered: how would you respond to someone who claims that the Hadith you quoted proves that Allah is in a makan of some sort, and that Allah has a حد (limit)? The prophet ﷺ saying “there is nothing above You or below You” shows that he ﷺ is presupposing that there is an aboveness and belowness relational to Allah, but that aboveness and belowness is just empty. And anything that has above and below to it is in a makan and has a limit in size.

Yes you can think of that place as the limit from there space itself is dissolving. Its the edge of space time itself. More then this and you will also dissolve. Because you are a creation. Its the limit where creation can still be intact.

First of all, we must know that Allāh does not resemble His creatures in any way, so we understand that Allāh is not like us and that Allāh is not a body that has a quantity, an image, organs, a weight, a volume, because all these things are characteristics specific to the creatures of Allāh and not to the Creator, because these characteristics are created by Allāh, that means that they have a beginning, that they are limited by the One Who created them, Who is none other than Allāh.
Therefore we need the One Who created us and our characteristics, our limits, but Allāh is not concerned with the characteristics of the bodies and He has no limit, and He does not need anything because Allāh is not a body because He created the bodies, Allāh is not limited because the one who is limited needs the One who limited him, in other words the creatures need a creator.
Therefore Allāh is not limited since He is the Unique Creator, so no one has imposed a limit on Allāh since there are no other creators except Him.
Allāh does not need anything, what is created has a beginning and an end and limits imposed by Allāh, while our Lord has neither beginning nor end, and He is not concerned with what His creatures are concerned with, namely the limit, the body, and the location! because places are also created, and scholars have said that places are the space that a body occupies, therefore we understand that the place exists depending on the existence of bodies because without palpable or improbable bodies the place would not exist.
But Allāh is not a body, therefore God is not located in a place, it is as simple as that...
Allāh tells us in the Qur'an: "Absolutely nothing is like Him" (Surah Ash-choura verse 11)
this is the most explicit verse of the Qur'an by which we understand that there is no possible analogy between God and His creations.
What refers to the creatures is for the creatures, and what refers to the Creator is for the Creator only.
In conclusion, we do not say about Allah that He has a face or hands or a leg or that He sat on His Throne or that He is a great body or that He is located in the heavens, all of this is impossible rationally, because the sound mind does not admit that the Creator of all things can resemble His creatures.
If Allah resembled His creatures, this would mean that it is possible for Him what is possible for creatures, such as; the beginning, the end, annihilation, need, movement, immobility, change of state, hunger, thirst, increase, decrease etc.
everything that changes, needs Someone who makes it change, but Allah does not change because change is the greatest proof of the coming into existence of a thing.
But Allah is in need of nothing, and He is not created, He is the perfect being, and He is almighty over all things, whoever is in need is weak and helpless, and does not deserve divinity, yet Allah is the Creator of all things, He is in need of nothing, and He is absolutely almighty over all things.

As for the event of Al-'Isra wa l-Mi^raj, when the Angel Jibril ^alayhi s-salām stopped at Sidratu l-Mountaha and told the Messenger of God that he could not go any further, he said this because Allāh granted this miracle to the Prophet Muhammad only, He raised him up to the heavens and made him see eminent and extraordinary things because he is the best of all His creatures, He raised him to increase his degree and to raise his honored rank, Allāh raised him up to the heavens up to Sidratu l-Mountaha and higher still until he saw Paradise and he heard the Angels writing on their pages what is written on Al-lawhou l-Mahfoudh (the preserved tablet).
And it was during this event that the Messenger of Allāh Salla l-Lāhou ^alayhi wasallam received the revelation of the 5 daily prayers which are actually worth 50 prayers, he went to a place where he received the revelation from Allāh but we do not say that he went to a place where he saw God and that he discussed with Him as the creatures would do with sounds and letters and sentences...
This is not worthy of being attributed to Allāh, God is exempt from all imperfections, He has the perfect attributes and names, and He does not resemble what He creates.

      Walaikum assalam brother
It is a place which Allah created for the Prophet ﷺ to have his experience of the Divine. The place is created, the experience was created. Nowhere is the sidratul muntaha "the lote tree of the utmost boundry" described as being outside creation. It is still within creation. And the "midst" that you are speaking of, is also metaphorical because it describes being in the divine presence.
Bear in mind, Musa also experienced the divine glory of Allah manifested to him on the mount. Allah spoke to him directly, and yet he did not have to ascend to heaven to experience this. The experience was created by Allah for Musa on earth, as the experience was created for Muhammad ﷺ at the highest possible point within the heavens.
      Hope this helps you.
      MUSA SAID,
"O my Lord! Reveal Yourself to me, that I may look upon You!' He replied: 'Never can you see Me. However, behold this mount; if it remains firm in its place, only then you will be able to see Me.' And as soon as his Lord unveiled His glory to the mount, He crushed it into fine dust, and Moses fell down in a swoon." 7:143

They will fight us on this but all we really have to do is prove that the objectors don't know what they are talking about by covering the issue of grave visitation, whose proofs are an avalanche against their positions while they have very little to retort back at us. With this issue of anthropomorphism they have many ahaddeeth that make it look like they have sound opinions, but anyone still listening to them after the blowout regarding grave visitation is an obvious sectarian. May Allah keep our faith sound and pleasing to Him. Amin.

@keith.anthony.infinity.h Only one sect has pushed anthropomorphism in the modern era. Once they invalidate their "scholarship" on other issues, then there are no longer two sides of this issue. The people outside their sect are in complete agreement and are consistent with the books of the great Imams and leaders of the successors in the historic period known as Islam's golden age. A time when WE colonized THEM and we determined their leaders and education, rather than the reverse, as it is today.

Saying this is all just a matter of metaphor is beating around the bush because even you said it yourself that there is a throne of Allah physically above the seven heavens. If Allah is sitting upon a throne relative to seven heavens then you can model that position using spatial coordinates. What about Allah waiting for Israfil to blow the trumpet for the commencement of Judgement day? This evokes a notion of time.
Also you said towards the last part that if something is above or below a person that is how we define a place. Well not exactly a place is a position in space-time which can be modeled with coordinates relative to everything else.
As Muslims you guys also believe Allah is outside of the universe as the creator. But it is absurd to think such a thing because the universe including all which is observable and not observable is reality itself and reality is defined as the state of being real. Allah has a state of being real so how can he be outside of reality as it’s creator?
Also in terms of imagination we can model where it is happening which is in your brain as waves and electrical signals. Those wave and electrical signals carry information about hat your are imagining which is why you can explain to us in words. But honestly I am not well-versed on the human brain as I am a physicist so you would have to go to a neuroscientist for that.
So in simple answers no, Allah is not beyond space-time because your own verses which you try to tie as metaphors suggest that. If you are religious let me just say you cannot hide behind metaphors all the time eventually you have to face reality for what it actually is.
