I was honestly wondering the same while looking at your portfolio. Glad to know you are updating it. Cant wait to see the new one, let me know if you need any help !
Thank you! I am excited to be updating my portfolio!! 😎 As for needing help, yes most definitely! ;-; I think the best way would be over on Instagram cause I will be making project updates, so any feedback there would be absolutely amazing! (The projects that I finish, I will be making full videos here about the whole entire project after they are completed, which is why I will be requesting feedback over on insta 😅)
Hey! I’ve just discovered your channel (through your Character Design Process series) and I’ve got to say, I think I’m in love. I know you’ve made a video about breaking away from boring art, but if you ever have the chance, would it be possible to get a video on spicing up a character design? Perhaps discussing what aspects make a design interesting and the likes. Either way, thanks again, and keep up the amazing content!
I am so glad you enjoyed my character design process series!! 🥹💖💖 Also I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your video suggestion on spicing up a character design!! I am writing it down right now 😍😍 I really appreciate your suggestion, thank you! 🥹💖
Just getting into character design myself, I have no idea WHY it took me THIS LONG to realize building characters and their back stories was such a mental passion I'd find. Still tryin to figure how to even start Edit Hopefully you save the "trash" as a looking back point for one day! Keep it! Its dopee
I love that! I myself enjoy building characters' back stories , although I haven't been able to find much time to do that unfortunately so the closest thing I can get is at least naming my character 😂 Don't worry I always save my trash art, its nice to look back on and see how much I have grown! 😤💖 I wish you the best on your character design journey! 🤩
mood! i need to fix my portfolio as well! i tend to avoid character art for my portfolio but weirdly i like character design and my sketchbooks are full with them. i also forget to make my portfolio for a hypothetical game and just do general world building stuff because i'm so used to making comics
5:40 Could you possibly elaborate on the distinction here? I’ve struggled to find examples of visdev character sheets which aren’t in the popular cartoony or anime styles and personally I haven’t seen anyone talk about a semi-realistic visdev niche. I assumed concept art was the way to go for designing characters in a more realistic style? Out of curiosity, did you do Game Art rather than Concept Art for your degree? I’m trying to choose between unis for September and those are the course titles I have to choose from. Thank you for sharing your experience and good luck with building your new portfolio! :)
Yes of course! Visdev for character design is more focused on how a character expresses themselves, showing their personality etc and its predominantly used for films. Where as concept art is more for games and concept artists spend more focus on showing a character's personality through a design, so like maybe a character has an interesting trinket related to their background story. Another difference between the two is that concept art heavily relies on model sheets for 3D artist to use whereas visdev can be a little bit more looser. They both are very similar to each other, so often you can see concept artists doing visdev and vice versa. There is visdev for realistic characters, although its less popular an example would be marvel cause they use visdev artists to design the costumes www.artstation.com/artwork/oOJkgB I hope that helps a little, there is a visdev artist here on RUclips that does a way better job at explaining Visdev, so I highly recommend checking out her channel: www.youtube.com/@JackieDroujko For university, I went to a tech school and their art program was only for Game Art. My professors did push to specialize, but most of the projects I did were building games, so for a lot of the concept art learning, I kinda had to figure it out and learn on my own. But the pro side of studying game art is that you learn how to do everything (3d, animation, ui etc) and you get more experience working in teams building games (at least thats what my school was pushing) which is great for experience. But as of right now, studios want specialized artists not generalized artist. So if you know you want to be a concept artist, just go full head first into concept art cause thats gonna be your best bet in getting your first job in the industry. Also keep in mind that concept artist positions are super duper competitive, so you gotta get darn good and have a bomb portfolio. I wish you the best in art journey and I hope you are excited to start university! Its an amazing time for personal growth and just learning more in general!! 🤗💖
@@stallout_art Wow I appreciate the in depth answer and specific examples! That makes sense, I’m not sure yet if I lean more towards expression or design to show a character’s personality, but it’s definitely a helpful thing to be aware of. Ah I thought that might be the case. I’m doing art & design rn and I’m having to teach myself - I don’t want to be in this situation again at uni. Unfortunately I already accepted a conditional offer for game art before I realised it’s not ideal for me. Now I’m trying to backtrack and apply elsewhere, so it’s reassuring that what you said lines up with my thought process. Thanks so much btw! :D
Might try branching to 3d character, animation or 3d environmental art. Given how AI could completely take over concept art in the near future. It's never too late to learn something new.
I agree, it’s never too late to learn something new! However I have done 3D characters, animation (I still do this for clients atm) and 3D environments, I never really enjoyed doing them except for 2D animation but it’s so long and tedious that I have moved my animations over to after effects so I don’t have to draw every single frame lol honestly I would probably rather just have art as a hobby and work some boring job rather than work as a 3D artist 😂 Imo I don’t think AI will be able to completely take over concept art and that’s just because AI can’t really design new things because it’s limited to the data set of already scrapped art. And AI wouldn’t be able to iterate on design ideas like how a character’s ability work in game. I honestly think that AI will become a tool for artists to create faster. Heck maybe concept artist’s model sheets with a push of a button can be turned into 3D models by AI, who knows! 😎
how did you get to be apart of those projects? and how does one go about finding a small project with multiple people? im wanting to expand and get some work experience
I met people at college and we would just make games together in our free time or we made games for our classes. Now that I have graduated, friends have reached out to make games!🤩 If you can’t meet people in person tho, I recommend joining a discord or something, specifically game jams cause you can work on a game with a team and through that you can meet new people and gain experience! 😎💖
