Exactly - I got the idea from Uncle Hubert, and I think the first time I saw the latch was 40-ish years ago, and it was well worn even then. They just don't wear out!
Uncle Hubert was a genius. Why don't they sell something like this? I have a metal gate and need something that opens from both sides. They are solid doors, so you can't stick your arm through to open the latch from the outer side.
Pull to open each way? Or have a tie gong over the top of the gate to each ring. Pull down on the tie to open the distant side. Problem there is animals can pull that tie as well.

Please look again. For an animal to lift the closest ring, they would also have to PULL the gate towards their nose to open the gate. Very unlikely. To open the gate with a push, then you have to open the distant ring, which their nose will not reach.

I'm 54 years old last month. As a kid, I walked through a gate with this type of latch and it's still in operation today. February 2020.
